Gamers are by no means strangers to Best Buy, in fact many regard it as one of their favorite stores to go to. One thing store-goers also have heard about from the store is the Geek Squad. It is their in store specialty group that fixes/sets up things for customers. Well the Geek Squad has a deal for new PS3 owners, check it out.

Yes you are reading that right. $129.99 to set up a PlayStation 3. Sad thing is that there will be some unsuspecting consumers who don’t know that much about technology (or reading manuals) that will pay for this.

‘Installing the latest firmware updates’? So they get to sit around for hours? Actually scratch that, if it’s a slim they get to install 3.01 oooh wow.

  2. SPD55 Says:

All you have to do is to follow the manuals and onscreen instructions… But then I used to build out my own machines a few years ago when things were more affordable and processors a lot smaller…

I wonder how much they will pay to have their HDTv setup. I have heard some folks willing to pay 99.99 for it. We have become a society of lazy tards and don’t want to think for our selves. So we have not come as far as watching Rome burn while Nero fiddles…

  3. Seraphemz Says:

Wow! I would love to meet the person that would pay for this. I can tell them how for 99.99 I can show them how to use their car….you know how to turn on and off…put it in park and reverse. How to roll down the windows for those hot days…..

    OMG. This is evil! LOL.

ha! what a rip. i recently bought a slim there, and they a $330 version. what’s the extra $30 for, you ask? “it’s already ready to go out of the box” the blue-shirted man said. meaning, that it’s been updated to 3.01. so they’re charging you $30 for them to open the box, get their grubby hands on the system, press update, shut it off, and repack it. ridiculous.
I opted for the $299 one and went through the oh-so-painful hassle of pressing the update button myself.

Update? Who wants to do that? =P

Oh I always thought it was a mistake when I saw “let geek squad install it” on the ps3 software. Now I’m not so sure! Do people pay to have best buy employee put a disc inside the machine and press play?

  7. DGR8Mc187 Says:

Biggest fukn ripoff ever , on another note GS will do this same thing for you for 200 dollars

    Our society is so stupid.

A friend of mine works in a support job, and he says the number one problem with electronics & pc’s etc., are the fact that the unit is not plugged in.

so for some people this might be a good option, I just think the price is unfair.
    $49.95 tops

    Wow. Just…wow.

  11. Pesico Says:

Funny thing is, when the consumers start bitching about freezing caused by 3.01, they will blame Best Buy for not setting it up correctly:p

I was a Geek Squad supervisor for a couple of years. $129.99 is the standard trip charge. If you wanted a Geek Squad agent to walk up to your front door and knock on it, the price would be $129.99. So basically the PS3 update is free. Of course while the agent (I hate saying that) is there, he will try to sell you additional services.

When I use to work in Home Theater at Bestbuy, I would set up home theaters for customers on the side. I’d usually charge about $50, depending on how far I had to drive, which is a lot better than the $150 Bestbuy was charging.

  14. BigWoopMagazine Says:

damn… yeah they tried to rip me when I bought my HDTV… trying to tell me I’ll get a better picture if I pay $600 more for LCD instead of plasma (a huge lie… contrast ratio and refresh rate on plasma are 6-10 times better), and then tried to get me to pay $300 to calibrate the tv. I did my research, bought a $20 blu-ray calibration disc off amazon, and did it myself. PS, that was a waste of money too, the only setting changed was contrast, from 50 to 48. woopty doo. I pity the poor saps that get swindled by this, it totally negates the fantastic price drop.

  15. AssassinHD Says:

I actually thought about doing that as well. I had many customers ask if I could fix their computers after hours at a discount. It could have been very profitable but when I took the job I signed an agreement that stated I would not engage in any business that would present a conflict of interests.

  16. FiftyQuid Says:

Why would you pay $129.99 for this?!

My price is only $109.00 :P

  17. skullking123 Says:

Ok so I have a great idea. Start an online business that makes you call me. You give me your credit card number and I will charge around $50 and then I will tell you to turn on the PS3 and click update. BAM money made

  18. MadDamage Says:

    Damn, thats fucked up!

  19. wtGp Says:

$129 for something u can do yourself easily. now that’s a rip off

  20. kirobz Says:

Don’t go to skullking123.com, go with my service. I only charge $49.99. Cheaper than him. lol.

I’m going to bestbuy later. Going to buy a camera for my sister. I’m going to take a pic with this ad. lol.
