The PSP Go is one of the boldest and most daring decisions ever made by a gaming hardware manufacturer. By utterly scrapping their disc-based format Sony truly embraced digital distribution, a move that could turn out to be truly industry defining, as the success of a solely digital platform will be seen for the first time. While Sony may have been planning to make the digital transition all along, they remained silent on how gamers could upgrade their handheld and yet keep their games.
Now, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced that people with existing UMD games and PSP’s who wish to upgrade to the new PSP Go, due out on 1st October, can claim three free downloads of the full games. The “PSP Go Rewards” program requires you to register your PSP Go on the PSN, and then to log in on to the PSN with your old PSP with the UMD in the drive, allowing you to download a special PSP Go theme, which then emails you a voucher for use on the PSP Go. This process can be done for three different games, out of the 17 titles available for the offer.
The list of available titles, which “may vary by territory” is as follows:
However, Sony Computer Entertainment America has stated they have no current upgrade plans for their regions.

So wait….you need to have one of those games for it to work?
no upgrade if you live in NA? huh
guess they need some sales numbers to see if its worth it?
News like this might lose potential PSPgo buyers. I myself, not being as of yet. Kinda thought it would just be 3 new titles along with the ability to tranfer UMD games.
@black_ryuk No, you just need to register your Go and connecto your old psp to you ps3
wow it can only be select titles? That is horrible
this is kind of worthless.
I think I’ll keep my PSP that can play UMDs thanks. Everything I read about the PSP Go makes me think its a complete waste of time.
It costs more, it does less and the games on PSN cost more than their UMD counterparts in the shops.
yeah, I assumed the PSN games would be cheaper, no box, no disc, etc. etc
I would get the 3000 if I was looking to purchase a handheld.
Yeah not how I expected this to happen , so it is okay to alienate all of your PSP customers by dropping UMD support but not okay to add a second analog and make a handful of devs rework there games accordingly , Seriously Sony CTFOn
The PSP Go looks appealing to the eye but my wallet says to just get the PSP 3000.
I posted this elsewhere, but I’ll post it here too because for once I’m feeling feisty and somewhat relevant:
“I think it is an interesting way of beta-testing their UMD “fingerprinting” tech. Offer this deal and check out how good you are at detecting which game is in the drive. Also check out the piracy rates on a list of games you don’t give a damn about. If all the stats work out in their favour they can then offer “Put your disk in your old PSP and download your digital copy” for all UMDs…”
Anyhow, my two cents worth. I’d rather get a voucher for free single-malt scotch, but I doubt that that would market well.
