Firmware updates for the PlayStation 3 are a hot topic this year on the internet. First with 3.0, as it was rumored to have cross-game voice chat for all titles. Though the highly anticipated feature didn’t make the cut, that doesn’t mean it isn’t coming.
A new rumor is swarming around that Firmware 3.10 will include a long-awaited feature, cross-game voice chat. This came from VG247, who state that their source had told them that Sony contacted developers to confirm that voice chat would come by the end of October.
And now, even TSA has revealed that their source has also confirmed the upcoming update, as well as cross-game voice chat. The update is supposed to come out sometime in either October or November. If this turns out to be true, how often do you guys think you’d end up using it? Let us know in the comment section below!

Still not entirely sure what cross-game chat is.

Gives me the ability to play Fallout 3 and talk to my buddies through a Bluetooth headset while they play through the Killzone 2 campaign. Basically talk to anyone on your friends list at any time.
September 26th, 2009 at 2:36 PM
Yeah… Me neither. Does anyone know what that is?
September 26th, 2009 at 2:40 PM
I think it just means you can talk to someone even if you aren’t playing the same game as them. So, like the messages we already have, but voice instead of text.
I’m more interested in what feature people will scream about the PS3 not having next though. There will always be something. Shall we place bets?

i am not waiting any more for any updates
September 26th, 2009 at 2:46 PM
I’d use this EVERYTIME one of my friends is on a different game.
September 26th, 2009 at 2:46 PM
Cross game chat is chatting universally across games.
I would rarely use it, as I have stated before, and I think it will just ruin team communication which is already anemic on PSN. If the competition didn’t already have it, it wouldn’t be a “necessity.” I think a party system and a feature spotlighting players across the network on a weekly basis would be better implemented.

cross game chat is the most requested feature on ps3.
its very similar to xbox live’s party system.
this is very useful for clan games and those casual gaming experiences and games that dont support voice chat inthe first place.
REASONS
Clan games… a lot of MP games dont allow you to talk via your headset once you die in multiplayer. if cross game chat was available, you could communicate with your clan members even if your dead and you can even tell them were the opposing team is hiding.
think ala gears of war 2.
casual games… just chilling one night maybe in home or hustle kings, lemmings or trials of topoq. there are moments where you and your friends can just totally laugh it out.
hope that makes sense.
Games like FEAR dont support voice chat in its MP modes, so this would really help to communicate with friends, as well as Kill zone/mag/resistance 2 whereby you and your friends maybe seperate teams or squads or watever the problem is.. at least you have this option.

i would love to hear your feedback, message me on PSN.

Every time someone wants the “Party System” it shows that they must also own the X-box 360 or has a friend that showed it to him. Those are features that the Live network will have that we won’t or can’t have because of either Copyright issues or Trademark issues. So asking for them with those titles from the Live Network is futile. When you consider that Sony is not even in competition or focused on the Live Network it makes more sense to develop your own system to get there.
This is what PS Home has going for it, you can have 60+ players in the Central Plaza(game lobby), that when voice chat comes back to the public spaces will be better than the live networks Party line of 6(?). What is the real problem is that Sony is taking its time to get it “perfect” which in reality never works since with today’s user there is no such thing. And taking extra time to do it raises expectations beyond what can be realistically delivered.
So Cross game chat to me is a nice feature if your in a game lobby of different online games and want to verbally convince your buddy to come and play with you but during game play I want all chatter focused on the game at hand… Especially in MAG or other online games that require teamwork to accomplish things in.

this a perfect addition since l hate quiting a game just to chat

I really think this is true. Sony is really trying to put PSN to the top. When everything’s been done, we’ll ask MS why they still ask for Live subscription when sony could do it for free. That’s the reason why I didn’t chose xbox.

GET RID OF THAT FAWKIN’ TICKER PLEASE!!!
09/26/2009 at 7:46 PM
what is wrong with the ticker? It does not slow down the XMB…it is not a hideous sight to look at like the old one…and it give you all of your useful info, time, msgs, etc.
September 26th, 2009 at 6:02 PM
They need to get rid of that stupid ticker first. Oh and I will believe this when I see it.
September 26th, 2009 at 6:05 PM
One step at a time….then people will seriously have no excuse to not bail on 360. The thing I noticed when I had a 360 was that it lacked variety of great exclusives. Sure they had different games, but their main focus is obvious. FPS games. With PS3 i get FPS and well…everything else. PS3 is kinda slow with the RPGs but those are coming soon enough. XD
Sony specializes in entertainment, while Microsoft specializes in internet stuffs. I’ve always made that distinction and it still holds true. At least imo.
September 26th, 2009 at 6:20 PM
what is this ticker u guys are talking about
September 26th, 2009 at 6:53 PM
@ wtGp
its the sidebar on the right side of the XMB when your in the XMB screen.. (not in game)
its something thats not a big deal but people wanna b**** about something. What the hell does everyone do? stare at the XMB screen all day? The few on my list complaining about the ticker are always in a game.. which means its not visible to them. i guess they just wanna b**** about anything.
September 26th, 2009 at 8:51 PM
SPD, the problem with your point, not really so much your point but more about the theoretical realization, is that all those people running around in Home are just random people. A party/group system is reserved for booting into a game with your friends. Also, I dont know about you, but 90% of the people I run into in Home have little to no trophies, and they have every article of clothing from the mall. They are not gamers. They spend all their time in Home. I dont want to game with them. The universal game launching feature that is coming soon is a greatly needed community feature, but that alone is not going to bring real gamers into Home.
September 26th, 2009 at 10:19 PM
This chat is never coming…get over it.
September 26th, 2009 at 10:41 PM
b****es can now stop crying yay! :]
September 26th, 2009 at 11:21 PM
@shadowjin l see and agree with u. WTF are people complaining about that, it doesn’t bother me. Is there people who just stare at the xmb all day?
September 27th, 2009 at 3:06 AM
TheHater is always complaining about something.
September 27th, 2009 at 9:46 AM
hes called TheHater for a reason hahahahhaaha these posts are f***ing hilarious… what hes not allowed to have a separate idea? if nobody complained about things nothing would be what it is today… the human mind is what it is because we seek out problems and then seek out ways to fix them… TheHater is only doing what he was born to do!
back on subject… would this work with online mp… could you separately talk on socom so that when you die you could still communicate with a still living partner or will this only work with offline games? like Lovestrucked said… can you use it during mp that dont offer voice chat his example was FEAR and then youd have communication playing the same game? i want to know exactly how this is going to work.
September 27th, 2009 at 5:05 PM
i dont really like the ticker either… its not important to me… i dont use it… i dont look at it, so there should be an option to completely remove… but im not dying over it… in game chat… id love it, i got ppl i dont have the same games with but i would like to talk to them
September 27th, 2009 at 5:08 PM
@jeneric
so in essence your saying hes a natural hater? lol
anyone can have a separate idea but when a person always has something negative to say and not any positives you cant help but not take them seriously. its like a girl friend who is never happy and complains about anything and rarely says anything positive that doesn’t end with a b****y tone. Thats a perfect example on how some act over little things like tickers, fonts, sparkles etc. Your a perfect example, you voice your negative and positive opinion.. while some, only say negatives things… after awhile they will be branded as b****y or never happy. Im all for freedom of speech but some need to lighten up a bit or limit the attitude.
September 27th, 2009 at 7:21 PM
Just let me turn off the ticker like the info bar of old. No I don’t spend all day looking at the ticker, but when I am enjoying my dynamic themes that ticker is a damn eyesore. Not only that, it’s just plain fugly. It looks like someone rubber stamped it onto the XMB, not like someone artistic designed it.
September 27th, 2009 at 9:36 PM
for the record…steelfox, if you got girlfriends like that… ur doing something wrong…hint hint..bad comparison… die ticker die
September 28th, 2009 at 5:27 AM
lol
speCtr.. steelfox is a girl, in case you didn’t know ..
its TRUE… people b**** to much about little things that don’t matter.. ie ticker….
maybe they should allow you to re download the ugly ass annoying ticker everyone hated before the 3.0. That comparison made complete sense.. think about it… anyone that complains about everything will not be taken seriously because all they do is b**** and nothing positives comes out of there mouth. think, think , think….
September 28th, 2009 at 1:01 PM
@ shadowjin – At least you could turn the old one off. Give me that option, please.
