Sony Offers Incentive to Buy From the PS Store Over Retail

Many PSP owners, despite being able to more easily purchase games from the PlayStation Store, still choose to buy their UMD titles at a retailer. Now Sony is offering an incentive to get PSP owners to choose the PS Store over retail.

Many retailers offer exclusive pre-order extras, which lures consumers into buying from them. Now Sony has a similar solution for the PlayStation Store. Starting tomorrow, anyone who purchases Gran Turismo from the PlayStation Store, gets a free in-game car. So if you weren’t sure where to pick your copy of Gran Turismo, the PS Store is the only place you’ll get the 2009 Nissan GT-R Spec V in Metallic Blue.

Hopefully Sony offers more incentives like this in the future. Doing so will make purchasing from the PS Store, that much more enticing.

now thats; a good idea. It better apply to future games

  2. I’ve been debating as well because, if I get the download, I can put it on my brother’s PSP as well (so we can trade cars and such) whereas getting the retail copy only lets one of us play at once, meaning we have to get two copies.

  3. Robotron says:

To be honest download games should be cheaper than retail.
There is no middleman profit, no packaging and the buyer loses any chance to trade/sell or give the game away.
A new game should be released at a retail price and at a discount for the digital price if they want to inspire people to buy them. Hell look at Blu-rays that come with a free digital copy with every movie so you have both options for one price.

I agree with Robotron. As much as I know that Digital Distribution is inevitable, I still don’t like it. Because I still prefer to own a physical copy of it. I also do not understand why it’s the same price at retail since (1)there’s no more middle man, (2)there’s no more expense manufacturing the disc, manual, and case, (3) no more shipping expense. Plus we get good deals from retail every now and then. If this is the so-called “future”, I would really hate it.

I definitely agree Robotron and that is why I don’t like it when people talk about going completely digital. You lose the Used market which means I won’t be able to afford as many games since I can’t sell ones I’m done with. Not to mention going all digital means you need an extremely large hard drive unless you want to always have to re-download and uninstall and re-install games.

  6. I really don’t like the thought of everything going digital. I like owning a hard copy, and I hate waiting to download/relying on internet.

  7. soldiercell says:

I would buy digital, I waste tons of money buying games and trading them in. This would help me save,
plus no loading discs. Im lazy….

  8. Digital will never take my beloved hard copy.

It would have to be a REAL GT-R to persuade me to buy an ephemeral digital copy over a cheaper physical one.

Retail bought games are cheaper – fact and you can sell them on or trade them in when you have had enough.

PSN Store games are too expensive and have no trade in value. Unless every game has a demo option, purchasing from PSN Store is a very carefully considered purchase.

I know most of us don’e read manuals, but it’s useful to have a hard copy manual to hand when playing a new game or checking character specific moves on beat-em ups for instance.

I have downloaded some PSOne classics but not full PSP titles – this is also the reason i bought a 3000 and not a PSP-Go.

How ’bout lower price as an incentive?
I’d bet that would work too.

Ergh this is exactly what i DONT want to see happen. This is so lose/lose for us.

I hate gamestop, as many people do, for what they do with profit to companies. Their trade in programs create more problems and scams than benefits for us, which is what it’s supposed to be all about. However, anyone that controls the monopoly on game distribution is going to have our consumer balls in their hand. If Sony chooses to eventually go competely digital dist., then that means we’re going to have no way to purchase a game other than to get it on PSN, that means no Amazon, Ebay, trading with your friends… But if Gamestop continues in it’s greedy path, then companies will continue to b gypped with profit as gamestop becomes richer and fatter. Do you think we’ll reach a middle ground?
