In this current generation of consoles, the Xbox 360 struck first, roughly one year before the PS3 and Nintendo Wii launched in North America. Speculation has run rampant as to which console manufacturer will take the first plunge into the next generation.
Will it be Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo? Or could a new console be in the works from another corporation looking to fight for consumers hard earned money in the console wars? One thing is for sure, we’ve found evidence of a developer scouting for talent to work on an “unannounced console platform”…
According to a job listing on their website. Ready at Dawn, the developers behind God of War: Chains of Olympus, Daxter, and the Wii port of the critically acclaimed Okami, are currently looking for “a few additions to our engine team in order to add support for an unannounced console platform.”
With the fact that Ready at Dawn have shown the most support for the PSP, there is a chance that they are looking for someone to work on PSP2 development.
Alternatively, this could be a new console from one of the big 3 console manufacturers, or it could even be possible it’s a new piece of hardware ready to join in on the console wars.
What do you think? Comment below.
Thanks Kain81 for the tip!

I think it has something to do with Sony since all their aggressive moment in the recent months.
October 12th, 2009 at 1:26 PM
Wow, that’s a great find.
October 12th, 2009 at 1:28 PM
There was a rumour that Sega were getting back into the hardware game. But to be honest, while competition is healthy, would the market really support a 4th brand of system?
October 12th, 2009 at 1:36 PM
hopefully it will be apple joining the fray.. id love to see the drama in that unfold.

I am sorry but Eff Apple. It’s one thing the gaming industry doesn’t need is rabid Apple Fanboys. God they are the worst. It’s like a religion to them.
Apple already released a game system, it failed.

hmmm… at this point,, maybe PSP2. maybe something totally unexpected, like someone taking another wack at the unsuccessful VR market. That is a cool picture of a possible PS4, very futuristic.
October 12th, 2009 at 2:10 PM
I’d actually be shocked if they are releasing a PSP2 any time soon, with all the marketing and software releases going into PSP and PSP Go right now it’s like a complete relaunch. I really doubt there will be a PSP2 in the next 2-3 years, maybe after 2-3 years one will be announced.
Can’t see Sony launching a new console as the PS3 is enjoying some great momentum and is starting to get going. the Wii is still selling so well but wouldn’t rule out a “Wii HD”. I’m also not certain MS are going to be releasing anything any time soon since Natal is supposed to be a device for the 360.
If it’s from one of the current console makers my money would be on something from Nintendo.
October 12th, 2009 at 2:21 PM
This is NOT a PSP2 or PS4, Xbox 720 (which I doubt will be the name).
This may be an MS Handheld, but then again they did specify console and not handheld.
Or perhaps we are all doomed and it will be some sort of Apple system, which I would loathe.

@Richard Allen
Hating something because of the brand alone is just as retarded as buying something for the brand, I hope you understand this.
I’m still waiting for OnLive to see if that could work, which is taking forever, I can imagine a console not relying on servers would be completed faster, but who knows how far along it is.
October 12th, 2009 at 2:43 PM
I’ve heard that Apple and Sega was working together in a new console ….
October 12th, 2009 at 2:51 PM
Someday MS is going to have to try and get something out of all of their Zune R&D. I would guess that it could be them, perhaps?
Maybe The Phantom is coming back around for another go; I haven’t heard tell of Infinium for a while
October 12th, 2009 at 2:57 PM
if there was a handheld that microsoft made and it was actually worth it, that might be the game changer right there
October 12th, 2009 at 3:05 PM
@Richard
im aware they failed but it be a funny to see M$ vs Apple battle it out and trash talk each other. i dont own or even want any apple product.

Maybe it has something to do with that article I read/favourited about a month ago about a cloud-gaming console code-named Full Circle made by MechaWorks.

@The80s
Onlive is something similar to that but was in stealth development for 7 years compared to full circles 2. Onlive is scheduled for winter this year according to their website, I imagine full circle might arrive a bit later than that.

I think people are jumping the gun here. By “unannounced console” in
the context of the website, Ready at Dawn were , from the looks of it,
talking about developing an engine for a console they have yet to
announce, most likely Wii or iPhone, since they talk further in the
site of looking at those two to develope for.
I seriously doubt they’re talking about an actual /new/ console.

@MIktar
Holy shit you’re right, I think we’re all idiots on this one.
October 12th, 2009 at 3:59 PM
Yeah I don’t hink this has to do with a console and more so with the development of a cross platform engine.
But on the other hand Sev did write his article so he obviously knows something we don’t
October 12th, 2009 at 4:04 PM
@Richard Allen
What is the system that apple made???
October 12th, 2009 at 4:05 PM
jumped the gun folks.
I still don’t really understand the resentment towards Apple. The people maybe, but anything to squelch MS’s tight fist on the market, thank you ma’am. Plus for all their fanboys aside, Apple does a WONDERFUL job listening and showing follow through. They looked at what the PSP could be doing with the internet browsing capability, the portable music, gaming and they went with it, and then their advertising sold it. hard core.
Just Saying.

Yeah, but the tip came from Kain81..
October 12th, 2009 at 4:47 PM
I say it’s a new engine for the Wii HD
October 12th, 2009 at 6:07 PM
@hydreake11
Apple Bandai Pippin
it was more of a computer than a full game system.
October 12th, 2009 at 7:25 PM
Why not an HD version of the Wii, would not take much to redesign the system board for better graphics since they already use the IBM PPC chip similar to the X-box 360 and Sony’s PS3. If you read the tech articles on the machines all Nintendo would have to do is to add a better graphics chip and it could be in competition with the lates crop of consoles. With HDTv running at 720p and the Wii running at 480p because they are focused on little children and families that don’t really care how many pixels the console can push on the screen the Wii could be due for an HD upgrade.
October 12th, 2009 at 11:32 PM
i also think its psp2, or it could be psp4000 like super secret said
October 13th, 2009 at 12:19 AM
just throwing my opinion out there but I agree with those saying that people are reading too much into this and that it’s just a new engine for a current console…In other words, not a new console they just want to make a new engine for a yet to be announced current gen. system.
If I’m wrong, however, I would say it is definitely not the next full-sized Playstation because it would essentially squash the recent PS3 momentum…Let me explain…If Sony announces the PS4, then what message does that send people who are just thinking about getting a PS3??? It’s going to make them skeptical in putting money towards something that might see it’s lifespan cut short and they would wonder why the lifespan is being cut short, as in “maybe the PS3 isn’t that great and that’s why they’re moving on already…”
I’m not going to make any guesses on what system it will be, I just know what it won’t be. I think Sony will stick to its original PS3 life cycle which I think was somewhere around 2012?? If I remember right…
