"This place is too damn hot!"

The SOCOM series of third-person tactical shooters has a long history on the PlayStation consoles. Beginning on the PlayStation 2, it had one of the best online multiplayer offerings for all of the last generation of consoles. SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation is the series’ latest offering, the first developed by Slant Six instead of Zipper Interactive, available only on the PlayStation 3. Although the game has received multiple updates since it released October 14th 2008, it hasn’t really received any traditional DLC. Until now.

"Ugh...Too...Damn...Cold!!!"

"Ugh...T-t-too...D-d-damn...C-c-cold!!!"

DLC is finally coming over to this game in the form of the aptly-named “Cold Front” pack, and with it the 1.6 update will also be applied. This patch includes numerous fixes as well as two new factions, the Dutch KCT and the Italian COMSUBIN as well as various new weapons. The DLC will contain a lot more content, however:

  • New Russian / Eastern European Area of Operation
  • Snow setting complete with snow effects, new snow gear and camo for both the Special Forces and Mercenaries, and thermal vision
  • New ARMS RUN gameplay mode
  • 5 New Maps
  • All new mercenaries characters with new looks and new VO.
  • New Special Forces squad, the Russian Spetsnaz
  • Gun turret emplacements
  • New music
  • All new character specialization/progression system
  • New weapons
  • New Trophies

While the game update will be free of charge, the new DLC will be priced at $14.99. However, if you purchase the pack within the first 24 hours of release you will only be charged $9.99. Considering the game can now be picked up for $28 from Amazon, that’d be $40 for the DLC and game together. That adds a lot of appeal to this game, and the recent patches have cleaned up much of what was wrong with the game initially. Has this convinced any of you to take the dive into SOCOM?

Wow! I believe it’s a great value. I haven’t really picked this one up because of the former issues. This may convince me to pick this up.

I think Slant Six should all be lined up against a wall and shot! They totally murdered my fave game of all time with their lack of play-testing, lack of interest in what the beta players feedback was, lack of intelligence and lack of effort in the making the game!

I mean, how come u can throw grenades with ur right hand when ur hiding round a corner, but not ur left? U could do it on the PS2 versions (nice next-gen production there eh? Not including something thats in the previous versions). And how come ur character cant run up over a concrete lip of an incredible 2 inches in height? U have to jump it instead! How come there are tonnes n tonnes of invisible walls that can be shot through from 1 side, but not the other?

I will DEFINATELY not be buting any DLC for this piss-poor excuse for a SOCOM game. Hang ur heads in shame Slant Six, and keep wondering why Sony dropped u from its games development programmes. If u cant work out why they did it, just gimme a call and i’l fill u in! :)

Despite all the issues this game has had I still found it to be alot of fun to play.
