It seems as though Infinity Ward‘s Modern Warfare 2 is out breaking more records. Last month, the game’s publisher, Activision, proclaimed the game as their most preordered game ever. Well, this latest record may just top that.
GameStop, America’s biggest nationwide videogame retailer, touting over 6,000 stores, has announced Modern Warfare 2 as the most preordered game in the store’s 25 year history. The executive vice president for merchandising and marketing Tony Bartel recently spoke about Modern Warfare 2 breaking the nationwide store’s preorder record.
“By all indicators, we anticipate Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be the biggest entertainment launch of all time.”
“As of today, the number of pre-order reservations we’ve taken for the game is the highest for any title we’ve ever sold in our 6,200 store network.”
GameStop did not say what game Modern Warfare 2 topped. However, it is safe to assume that game may be Take-Two’s Grand Theft Auto IV. GTA IV, which launched in April 2008, managed to sell a whopping $500 million in its opening week.

I am not surprised by this at all. This is the first game I have ever pre-ordered and I think the high retail price is a major factor.
I pre-ordered from Amazon, knowing the price would increase and I would save money. When this gets delivered to my door next week Amazon will be sending me an email telling me how much i have saved on the launch day price (note this will still not be as high as the recommended retail price). I will have saved around £15 by pre-ordering MW2 and Uncharted 2, rather than ordering them on the day of release.
Amazon and other retailers must be doing this as a loss leading exercise or to bump up thier allocation from the game’s distributors, perhaps giving them priority shipments.
I’m sorry but what is the point of pre-ordering minus the few extra maps or costumes you might get at said shop. I don’t see the problem in getting it during that week. or better yet wait a month to let the price drop!
Conflicted…
1. I don’t want to buy this game because I don’t want to support money hungry Activision.
2. I want to buy this game to support PS3 and show it can sell lots of copies of blockbuster titles.
Yup guess I’ll have to wait for an Amazon Deal of the Day.
More than likely it will be the biggest selling launch every…but….that doesnt mean all the hype makes the game worth it.
@Joshstork
pre-order is to have the game reserved for you, did you not know the definition of pre-ordering?
I can’t wait for MW2.
I probably will pass on MW2. It looks great, but it’s just not for me. Besides, I’ll be busy with a slew of other games.
I pre-ordered the Hardened edition from Amazon with release day shipping.
I read that MW2 is breaking preordered records by every major game retailer from Amazon-Bestbuy. Hard to believe there are so many COD fans out there. Also read that the bomb dropped on death perk has been removed.
the main difference between this and other games *and this is why im sure it is getting so many preorders*
for starters, ANYTHING that happens gets a big post on some *usually 3+* news sites which makes people go “wow if this game has so much news, clearly it must be amazing” which gets a few sales
secondly, the ps3 *x360?* havent had a serious shooter in quite a while *atleast a good one that is… not stuff like wolfenstein, or sub shooters like Borderlands* which naturally fuels sales, of the wishy washy shooter fans…
thirdly, it has the new coke affect, CoD MW 1 was highly popular, WAW was not, MW 2 is seen to be the next big one, so its selling better than WAW because of the love for MW 1
forthly, rarly do i see games have in store ad’s 5+ months prior to it coming out… when i bought my ps3 in july i was asked if i wanted to preorder CoD MW 2… YES IN JULY THEY ASKED ME! =\ they also had a poster or 2, ive seen them at several stores as the time grows closer, I have never seen a game with more hype than this…
fifthly, you have the idiot fan boys talking it up, and that gets more and more and more people buying, simply because their friends are getting it, or it has such a high hype they want it…
finally, there’s several special editions… look at the top tier one, it sold out without much of a hassle at all, and then you go down the list… many people will want the special edition *i bought halo 2 harden because it was a special case =\* many others will preorder and do this to make it the full experence, look at demons souls MANY copies sold, and it was #1 on gamefaqs till U2 came out… similar logic, but wider demographic.
any game, that is part of a series, that has little originality required to get another sale, with minor tweaks, and ad’s/constant press on your game for 5+ months, you can do as well as this too =\
@victorino
LMAO, lets forget all about the quality of a game just because of how popular it is!
Forget about single player story, the co op, the graphics, the…shit.. you forgot about anything having to do with the actual game didn’t you?
My PS3 will no longer be called a PS3. It will be called THE COD MACHINE!!!
Same here Zema although if you look at what I usually play it is a Cod machine for me , lol.
This game will probably be the biggest selling game in history and for many years to come.
I wonder if they’ll have a bundle? also wondering about a Home space?
wow, it isn’t even out and it’s already winning awards….
So much for the activision boycott. lol
Hmmm… not to sure about this one. After playing uncharted 2 I think the bar for single player story campaign has been raised so high that I’ll be measuring up every game I play from now on to U2. I can honestly say that U2 has the best single player campaign I have ever played. That being said, I think I’m going to wait for the reviews to come in for MW2′s campaign before making a purchase because I’m just more into the single player experience more than the multi player, which has been what every COD game has been since 4. We all know the online is gonna be great but I need a solid single player experience to make the purchase.
@ fifty ,
agreed, i’ve got too much on my plate for this chirtmas, when i get back home.
