2009 has been a great year for the PlayStation 3. The biggest change was the reveal of the PlayStation 3 Slim model, which, coupled with a pricebreak, has boosted sales for the past couple of months. Nowhere is that evident more than the PlayStation brand’s home, the Land of the Rising Sun.
That’s Japan in case you didn’t know. Anyway, Sony’s little-console-that-could has been doing very well in sales over there. So well, in fact, that the PlayStation 3 is paced to outsell Nintendo’s Wii for the entire year. Current data for consoles sold in Japan from January 4th to October 24th of this year are as follows:
Wii: 1,012,924
PS3: 1,006,810
360: 284,943
Recent data suggests this will be the state of things when last week’s sales are tallied:
PS3: 1,044,310
Wii: 1,038,924
360: 294,943
If this trend continues, the Wii will have been outsold in yearly sales in Japan for the first time. Certainly good news for Sony! Stay with PlayStation LifeStyle for more on this and other news.

This is pretty impressive, but here are the figures of total sales for the systems in japan
PS3:
3,400,000
(as of September 6, 2009)
Wii:
7,526,821
(as of December 28, 2008)
Overtake is kind of a overstatement, eh?

Now think about how much more the PS3 has been for more-than-half a year…and the fact that it’s STILL $100 more. Add to that the FACT the Nintendo’s own president had to tell board members that the Wii has “stalled” (his word, not mine). The world just found out that “casual gamers” are not “REPEAT GAMERS”, and that the industry runs on the Hardcore.
11/04/2009 at 8:16 PM
Amen! Casual gamers are definitely NOT repeat gamers, they maybe purchase two games a year if that.

pretty damn good job by both PS3 and the Wii for sales in Japan.

Cool stuff glad to see the PS3 take back the home turf, but how long can it keep up?
P.S.
Thanks for all the points from my peeps. I am not a bot, I am THE bot, lol
