PS3 to Recieve Colorful & Social Firmware Update

11/11/2009 Written by Ruben Perez

Without a doubt the most rumored subject on the PlayStation 3 is the future firmware features. Some long sought after features that came to be include in game XMB and XMB trophies. Today some photos have come to light that indicate the XMB will get some further retooling with the addition of some customization features as well enhanced community features.

Gaming website ScrawlFX today revealed what seems to be legitimate renders of features that can be expected in the PS3’s next firmware update. These images show in detail a native Facebook application icon, gamercard color options, and what appears to be a new photo view. The shots are said to be taken from the PlayStation website itself, yet they are missing at the time of publishing. As always, stick with PlayStation LifeStyle for more news on upcoming firmware updates.

I really hope this turns out to be true. I’d love to have some more community/PSN features on the XMB.

  3. kirobz Says:

I thought Facebook application would arrive next year? lol.

  4. shadowjin Says:

this is a RUMOR. facebook has a link..

Swap cross game chat for Facebook??? Well not sure if that is what is happening but I would not be surprised if that was pulled forward since it would be easier to do until cross game chat hits the console if it does. With M$ pulling party chat from new online multiplayer games it might not be the next best thing that Sony should be coping from them. Since party chat is being pulled because of rants of cheating in online games on the XBL. So if Sony does not add cross game chat it would show that they were really ahead of the cheating curve. I know that some current online games will allow you to talk/chat after you have been killed and so it may not really be necessary.

But all the other stuff looks like it will be good additions when they come. EOM?????

I don’t care about trophies, could care less about facebook, the only thing I really want that would make the ps3 complete in my opinion would be custom in-game music.

    and still no new avatars

WestSiide – if you haven’t figured it out by now it is up to game developers to add the ability to play custom soundtracks in games…that’s why games like Killzone 2 and MLB 09 The Show can do it. Most developers don’t want to do it because they dish out so much cash to make the soundtrack that they want you to listen to it.

I really don’t need to see Facebook on my PS3…it has basically become useless to me, I really don’t need to know every stupid little thing my friends are thinking, if it was important they would tell me about it on the phone or in person. This is also the reason I will never use Twitter…I couldn’t care less what some celebrity is thinking right this second. It’s actually pretty pathetic to me that so many people do care, they obviously aren’t very satisfied with their own lives to be trying to follow someone elses so closely. Not that it’s the only reason people use it, but it’s all you hear about on TV constantly.

Grrrrrrr! RUN TO THE HILLS! Dam facebooks coming!!!

  10. MakaiOokami Says:

The idea that cross game voice chat will foster cheating is fucking stupid. Why? Because if you have owned a PS3 since close to launch you have saved about enough money to get a PSP from not having monthly fees. Why does that matter? Simple. Skype.

It’s stupid to leave out Cross Game Voice chat simply because someone might have a slightly easier time cheating. Is it really that hard to ventrillo or skype or voxli or PSP Skype or make a cellphone call, or a million bajillion alternatives?

People are going to cheat no matter what. The Cross game voice chat was leaked by Naughty Dog, I seriously doubt they are going to just nix it. I mean there wasn’t any proof in those pictures that Cross Game Voice chat was pulled.

This is basically what we have.

Rumor was started by Naughty Dog Dev that voice chat will be in next firmware.

Rumor started by uk.playstation.com photos about extra features on top of that.

Rumor started by some schmuck that cross game voice chat was pulled.

How do you get from speculating on a rumor, to speculating on additional rumors, and then speculating that the 2 additional features some how mean that the feature rumored to be included is not going to be included with not even so much as rumors to back it up. People are assuming that because a feature is being added a different feature is being removed even though all the features are rumors to begin with. O_o how the hell did they get to that conclusion?

The 2D photo formatting is highly significant – if that is applied to other lists like music.

I’ve been complaining about the terrible Artist->Tracks arrangement for years. Now if this redesign means selecting an Artist reveals a 2D list of Albums, then I’ll be absolutely ecstatic. As it is, the PSP is a better media centre than the PS3. :-/

  12. claass21 Says:

i would be happy with them just getting rid of the dumb gray bars on the friend list

  13. SolidCake_ Says:

the middle picture is combining two different languages on the same screen,
    so I call fake.

  14. TheHater Says:

Where is my new avatars dammit. Fuck facebook

  15. xtigerz Says:

@ giese you are right on the money with your comment.

  16. WestSiide Says:

    @ giese
I understand Sony is leaving it to the developers to implement the custom soundtrack in their games. Some have it, some don’t. I really like the way Burnout Paradise has it. The way you can create custom playlists and even switch between tracks in-game. I was refering more of a universal way to do this, meaning you simply go to the xmb pick a song or playlist, and there you go. I understand the high cost, time and effort developers go through with their own original soundtrack. Also that custom music wouldn’t work right with many games as it wouldn’t set the mood the way developers intended it. I simply would like to have the option of doing in natively myself through the xmb on what I want to listen to, that is all.

  17. Odium_Generis Says:

Help. I hit something on my keyboard to make all the text SUPER small on my screen. Any idea what I did (and how I reverse it)? This is crazy.

  18. shadowjin Says:

    @Westside

he answered your question already.. developers dont want it because they spend money to add there own music. by asking again of a “universal” way of doing it would upset some developers.

  19. Natiej85 Says:

Anything new is cooo, but facebook? First off facebook was intially for college students only and came out when I was in college. During that period of time I tired of it, then it because open to none college students and everybody and their mother is now on it and to some degree it replaced myspace. None of this matters because people just love to communicate with each other and that understandable. I’m just not into gettin contacted by some one night stand from 1999 wanting to chat about life. A disable or delete option would be great appreciated on my behalf.

  20. soldiercell Says:

More worthless shit. Where are the new Avatars promised way back 3.0

  21. wtGp Says:

    @WestSiide
l could care less for in-game music because that will never happen because of the developers. l love the attention they’re giving to gamer cards now all that’s left is new avatars

  22. Captnstryker Says:

I could care less about facebook, I just want a system that works seemlessly not a quirky new feature that ties into a fad in time facebook will go out of popularity when the next new thing hits the market
I often thought SCEA was more of a independent thinker.. guess if they go with facebook we see that is not the case.. Screw Facebook.. give me more flexibility in my XMB, allow me to make my owh themes, avatars etc

  23. WestSiide Says:

Some of you lack simple reading comprehension. I UNDERSTAND why developers wont implement it. I simply was stating how me, myself, as an individual would like the feature. The ability to play any song, any time, at any point in any game would be a feature I would like. Understand now?

  24. shadowjin Says:

    @westside

yet, you asked again a simple question that was answered… dont be moron. if you knew that why ask for it?

  25. WestSiide Says:

    @ shadow
So basically what your saying is that anyone who ever requested or wanted a feature implemented is a moron right? You are the epitome of an ignorant idiot who’s posts bring little to nothing to any thread. Why even bother posting or replying if the best you can do is act like a immature little child. Oh wait, sitting behind your monitor brings out the courage you lack in your everyday life. lol Kids these days…

  26. joinsideke Says:

    sorry jin, he’s right.

I never realized so many people were rabid for tiny 1×1 pictures to put by their name for identifying purposes. Cross voice chat is all i’m really looking forward too, but seeing Facebook makes me smile since that was a big deal when MS announced it as a coming feature at E3.
