PSP To Have LittleBigSurprise… Trophies [UPDATE]

Disclaimer: Above image is an artist rendition of trophies on the PSP.

Right around E3 2009 there were rumblings of trophies coming to the PSP. These rumors reached new heights when it was reported that SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3 had trophy support. This was quickly debunked by Slant Six, who are the development team behind the game, stating these “trophies” were actually an in-game reward system known as “medals”. This was further shot down by Eric Lempel who revealed Trophies that hackers could exploit the trophy system.

Although there was a glimmer of hope, coming from the President of Sony Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida who proclaimed:

“It’s under discussion, but there are some technical challenges.”

Now, we’ve uncovered some possible “proof” that PSP trophies are coming, and could be much sooner than you’d think…

According to the retail packaging for the PSP version of LittleBigPlanet, within the list of game features, among leaderboards, add-on content, and PlayStation Home, there is also mention of trophies.

Before you get your hopes up… We’ve had LittleBigPlanet review code since the beginning of November, and we’ve yet to unlock a single trophy. However, this IS review code after all, many things have been altered to assist the reviewer, such as infinite respawns at all checkpoints.

Another glaring issue that makes this feature unlikely, is the fact there isn’t an area within the PSP’s XMB for trophies. Then again, Sony could be stealthily preparing a firmware update as we speak. A firmware update would almost certainly be needed to enable such a feature.

PSP owners hopes are already running high, since this is being reported by users on the Official PlayStation Forums, and is garnering quite a bit of interest.

It’s also important to note that many upcoming PSP games have the framework needed for trophy support. SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3 features “medals” and Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines includes “accomplishments”, both of which could easily translate over to trophies.

We’ve emailed SCEA for a confirmation and we will update as soon as we receive a response.

Either way, LittleBigPlanet for PSP launches this week, so we’ll be finding out for sure soon enough if the game does indeed support trophies on the PSP. If so, this almost certainly means a PSP firmware update this week to coincide with the games release. For now, file this as a rumor.

[Update] IGN have reported that Sony revealed LittleBigPlanet for PSP will not feature trophies. A representative for Sony said:

“The descriptions on the pack front summarize the PSN experience and are not specific to the individual product features,”

So apparently Sony doesn’t mind falsely advertising features on the retail package of their games. Either that or this Sony rep is buying time until an official announcement. Like we mentioned above, LittleBigPlanet launches this week, so we’ll have to just wait and see.

Another thing we’d like to point out. If these features that summarize the “PSN experience” aren’t speaking of individual products, then why aren’t the same features included on the LBP PSP retail box, that are included on the PS3 LittleBigPlanet Game of the Year Edition retail box (pictured below).

That is just a type-o on the box, IGN.com established that. But I would love to see trophies on the PSP.

  2. Pesico says:

Oh crap, you guys got my hopes up.

  3. Trophy support on the PSP would be great.

  4. SPD55 says:

Might be better with the new PSPGo since it has more onboard ram.

  5. Hongo says:

I have always thought that Trophies for PSP should be called Medals. Trophies stay on a shelf and basically keep in one place (console). Medals however, you can carry them around with you and are typically more portable (handheld).

That way, you could have a collection of Trophies and a collection of Medals.

  6. Hongo, that’s a good idea. And my hopes are getting up, since this seems likely. But, I think they’d more likely announce the feature a while before it comes out… Not to mention this wasn’t leaked, like nearly all big Playstation announcements are.

  7. It also says “PlayStation Home” right before “Trophies” so I highly doubt it will be included. I sure would like this to pan out though. I think it would be sweet to have trophies on my PSPgo. :D

  8. victorinox says:

give up hope it wont happen =\

psp doesnt run the xmb in the background like the ps3 so i dont see how they can be unlocked, also the psp has WAY TOO MANY titles that dont have it for it to be popularized nor will older titles get them, and way too many problems esp with the 1k’s perhaps 2k’s too

  9. rudrick says:

Might be when you hook up LBP psp to your PS3 then the trophies or medals you unlocked, transfer to the PS3?

  10. wtGp says:

    @victorinox
uhh the ps3 had lots of many titles that didn’t get trophy support as well so that logic is useless (l’m not being mean just stating an example)
Sony could be denying it like the ps3 slim, l would love trophy support for the psp. Like l said about trophies, it’s a good incentive to get more play time out of your game.

  11. I would love to get back into playing alot of PSP games, i’m just waiting on the trophy support.

  12. I bet it is just like with Pinball Heroes. Trophies yes. Offline yes. Just FYI if You just got something. Online scoreboards include trophies but just to summarize them.

  13. Timewarp says:

false advertising is against the codes and conventions of trading standards so this is confirmation of trophies on the PSP that or a typo which like the incident with capcom would have been spotted and changed with sony making an annocement apoligising so this is confirmation to PSP trophies.

That or someone has photoshoped your picture to include a trophey from the PS3 version which is unlikely seeing as the PS3 version came with pictures when you got a trophey so i can’t see any other way other then trophies for the PSP to explain this.

EDIT – yeah i just realised the picture is of an artist’s rendition >_<

  14. FiftyQuid says:

Sony hasn’t been able to keep a secret from us net nerds since 2007. Why would they be able to keep one now? Especially one this big. I’ll chalk this up to a typo on the box.

  15. I don’t know how to feel just now…
I remember a news story from a while ago stating that the trophies for PSP have been 100% rejected by sony….but a typo on the case? Well, I’ll try to not get my hopes up

All the same, if this game does have trophies, I will buy it as soon as it hits PSN.

  16. Timewarp says:

yeah but what else could this be? A typo would have been corrected by now

  17. Natiej85 says:

Come on you guys, that pic is of the back of the Game of the Year Edition Little Big Planet. The PSP version hasn’t won any awards yet. And we all know you can’t launch a psp game from home.

  18. Max Murray says:

    @ hongo

that is genius. Great idea, post that on the Playstation forums, and with luck someone higher will hear that and the gears will be put in place.

….Sorry, i’m just really impressed with that idea…

I’m hoping this is something like psp-ps3 connectivity like rudrick touched at. I would hope there were trophies that would be like “DLC LBP trophies”, like a subcategory for the PSP, that way it might cut down on hacking issue, no? Plus think of cool mini games and shit this would offer.

I suppose if this were a feature though, we’d have heard about it since it would be a pretty big excitement builder.

  19. Hongo says:

    @ CrimsonFox13

    Thanks!

    @joinsideke

I’m glad people on here like it! I have posted it twice now on the official PS forums. The threads were ignored and got like 2-4 posts each, mostly mixed responses. I would think it would out better myself. You could easily have a category for your Trophy collection and a category for your Medal collection. Both of them should be separated, but can be paired together for an overall total if you would like. It’s one of those ideas that makes you think, “If only these companies would sometimes take a chance and hire a guy like me off the street. I could surprise them.”

I sometimes think it’s everyday people like you and me who have better ideas and concepts for gaming than even some of the bigwigs in the industry.

  20. Would anyone really think that psp is getting trophies? It also says PlayStation Home next to it..

  21. “The descriptions on the pack front summarize the PSN experience and are not specific to the individual product features”

That doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. If that were true, wouldn’t EVERY PS3 game have all PSN features listed on it, regardless as to whether or not the game supported them?

I’m starting to believe these pictures though. Everyone remember when the picture of the PS3 slim box was leaked and Sony totally denied it? And now that exact same box is in my local gamestop.

Oh well, like the author of this article says: We just have to wait until the game comes out. I’m keeping my fingers crossed ’til then.

  22. [...] More controversy courtesy of packaging that lists “PlayStation Home” and “Trophies” as [...]

  23. I saw the box in gamestop today. It does say trophies.

By the way…..Why would hackers care about trophies??? They are using custom firmware and are not able to sign into PSN, so they would never be able to sync any earned trophies.

Maybe trophies will come out for PSP
