The internet is a buzz this morning with information regarding Sony’s PlayStation Network.  Just off the heels of the announced (and misinterpreted) PSN Subscription revenue streams, the same document reveals some more tid-bits about services coming to the PlayStation Network.

According to a new official Sony presentation, sometime next year, Q2 FY2010 to be exact, Sony is going to be releasing a non-game software development kit. The only purpose this could serve is for applications. Application development will probably come pretty quickly for the platform. The ever popular iPhone App store has created a new marketplace of developers.  Those developers will be keen to have another marketplace available to pimp their wares.

  1. I’ll be purchasing apps. Will you Rich?

  2. Timewarp says:

you mean richie rich? Isn’t he the little rich kid in the top hat?! He wouldn’t own a PS3 he’d buy stock in sony.

  3. ChesterPTR says:

    Now that would be something.
    So many new possibilities.

I think the introduction of Netflix was a signal of this change with the facebook thing in 3.1 as an extension of it. Now, if it’s fairly open… that’ll be something. Things like Boxee (or other streaming interfaces/aggregators) would be ideal, as would a lot of other small apps. Showtimes, a decent feed reader, decent weather app, Skype, Spotify, multi-protocol chat clients, etc. would all be welcome…

  5. shadowjin says:

hell yeah! more options the better

I like the idea of apps for the PSN, I would think they’d be mainly for the portable devices but
I’m probably not seeing a big enough picture right now.

Like a GPS app you keep on the PS3 and access it with your Sony PSP or Sony phone….
Sounds cool bring on the aps.

  8. Good news. Bring on the Apps I say!

  9. qubusek says:

Apps for ps3 and psp i hope:)

  10. giese095 says:

can’t say I would use any of them…same reason I won’t waste the money to get an iPhone…but I’ll welcome them anyway. I guess I just don’t see the need for most of the apps that they have…I don’t need GPS on my phone cuz I never get lost

  11. Max Murray says:

I wonder how much freedom will be given. Apps kick ass for phones, so their inclusion on games will be welcome and wonderful

  12. Silenus says:

Oh boy! I can’t wait for the “shake your PS3″ for a game of craps. Or the “Find the Nearest Cluckin Bell” GPS app. Or the best one of all. The daily planner! It’ll allow me to carry my PS3 everywhere and keep track of my day!

  13. nemo20000 says:

Awesome. There’ll be no shortage of useful stuff then – twitter, last.fm, etc

Wonderful news, especially if there’s a free version. ;-)

  14. sweet, not that I mind the amount of money I spend on my PS3 every week… but damn it, they are going to put out more stuff to make me excited about spending more money? This is why I avoid the mall for gods sake.

  15. Sweet, some people think nobody could come up with a good app and we’d just see a bunch of crap, shows what kind of fanboys we have sometimes.
