Key Feature Sneaks Past PS3 Owners

11/21/2009 Written by Josh Fernandes

PlayStation owners have been demanding two key features since the launch of the PS3: cross-game chat and cross-game invites. Well, the long wait is over for one of those features.

DLB Network has put together this video showing cross-game invites on the PS3. In the video, the user is able to jump directly from his game of Burnout: Paradise into a friend’s game in Modern Warfare 2. As of now, Modern Warfare 2 is the only game that allows you to send out game invites; however, it appears that you can send invites to friends no matter what game they are playing. Sony didn’t announce this feature, but it was most likely implemented with Firmware 3.0.

    it couldnt have been implemented in 3.0, because if MW2 is the only game that does it, and it required 3.01 to work..

  2. Unimush Says:

    Uncharted 2 has it as well

  3. Mischief805 Says:

    What!? This has been around since Resident Evil 5! I cross invite my friends in that game all the time! its been around since last march..

  4. SPD55 Says:

    Cross Game Invites might have come along with cross game text chat since the invite is mostly a text document asking your attention and to go to the game of the invitee, in this case MW2. And until more developers patch their games then it will not be known that it is even there. Just like in-game music it has to come in the game and not the XMB itself.

    Also BatterField Bad Company 2 beta has it.

  6. Odium_Generis Says:

    So does Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.

  7. DGR8Mc187 Says:

    Cool but not new.

    @SPD55
    One thing about the music though, if it was through the XMB it would be TONS more convenient.

  9. Odium_Generis Says:

    You can;t make something that wasn’t supposed to be integrated, integrated after that fact. That is the limitation of the PSN this gen.

    Uhm. As far as I can see it is the exact same as how games like Tekken 5 and Rock Band does this. They basically send a message with a file that needs to be loaded in a specific game.

  11. wtGp Says:

    this isn’t new

    Its not really knew but I have no clue why Sony doesn’t actually announce this stuff when they do FW updates.

    But Johhny, even if custom soundtracks was through just the XMB, the games devs would still have to write it into their games so that the soundtrack would mute when you turn on your own music…I have always thought that maybe devs. like Sony’s way of doing custom soundtracks too, they don’t want you to play your own music over the soundtrack they spend so much time on, and that’s why more don’t allow it…

    one thing Sony could add to the PS3’s music functions though is an automatic volume leveling feature. Sure I could go through and level the volume on every song on my computer first, but why would I want to when most music players do this for you. I always had problems in Killzone 2 with some songs being really quiet and others being extremely loud…not a necessity but it would be a nice little add-on.

  14. Robotron Says:

    Nice for the games that support.

    @ Tiran Kenja

    no it does not..

    rockband and tekken 5 dont ask you to switch the disk like the video.. it just leaves it in a message and you have to enter the game, load and find the friend invite section to accept..(i have both games i know for a fact its not the same)

    in the video it directly joins your game even with a message saying you need Xgame to join.. no loading the intro, connecting online and fiddling threw the menu.. direct connection just by accepting the invite from the message… If the guy in the video was playing a game from his HDD and he had the MW2 disk inserted than he just accepts to join..

    @giese095

    theres a sound leveler in the options. Its been around for ages..

    No one cares, but Buzz Quiz World has the feature too. There is no “Check Invites” feature in Buzz Quiz World and the only way you can join an Invite from the message list specifically. I found that out earlier.

    Unless the feature won’t actually work from inside another game, but that’s another issue. I still don’t see how the feature is that awesome. Ya it cuts out the load times and stuff like that, but just as long as companies support the ability to jump into a game with your friends from your friends list, that’s good enough for me.

  18. pyro494 Says:

    It’s been around since skate 2

  19. joinsideke Says:

    we haven’t heard abotu it because it hasn;’t been perfected- this is far from soemthing sony wants to announce as a new innovation, especially when it doesn’t work. Give it time, when it’s fixed and fully installed- we’ll hear about it.

  20. Matthew Whitney Says:

    @curtissheets28

    How about you sync your trophies and then go look at your facebook page…
