With more and more games either releasing exclusively on the PSN store, or doing a a dual PSN / retail release, the question must be posed: How do the sales numbers compare? Well, with the latest release of Persona 3, the PSP title that released on both the PSN store and on retail shelves, the numbers are quite striking.

According to the latest Media Create estimates, the retail version of Persona 3 has sold around 158,000 copies. On the other hand, the PSN version managed to sell a dismal 10,000 units.

It should be noted, these are not official numbers–only estimates. Atlus USA has not commented on whether or not Persona 3 would release in North America.

I think it just goes to show that when given the option, people still prefer physical media

Cameron Teague I think it just goes to show that given the option more people perfer to get Atlus preorder bonuses like soundtracks and artbooks that are usually released with this stuff, and that there are a lot more factors.

The PSN version is 6 percent of the sales, but there are a lot of factors in all of this. I am 99 percent sure that this game had preorder bonuses and people were looking at it like “Well I could get a bunch of free crap, or not, all for the same price” and went with free crap. I would. PSN titles HAVE to get a price reduction of some sort in order to be compared.

Remember Atlus had a sale of PSN titles and I bought 120 dollars worth of Retail titles for 30 dollars digitally. (if compared to Amazon’s prices)

I really think any negative PSN options are just baseless speculation. I mean fact of the matter if a PSN copy was 30 dollars, and a retail copy was almost impossible to be found for 40 dollars and ebaying for 50… what would you choose? PSN offers you a chance to buy a copy of games that are out of print, hard to find, etc… You have to judge those sales long term, because anything else is NOT being intellectually honest. It’s a market trend and impulse buys are more attractive if there’s a nice looking case, with cool artwork, and ESPECIALLY freebies compared to just a picture of the game online in a small thumbnail.

So don’t make any judgements. I personally feel that 30 million yen worth of sales on the PSN is a good solid amount.and they’re probably looking at this game as “Yay we sold quite a bit of copies” rather than “Boo we barely sell any digital copies with no freebies” Atlus takes care of their retail shoppers.

    Yeah what Makai said, lol

  4. Cameron Teague Says:

Preorder bonus or not, my personal opinion is people still prefer a physical copy over a digitial

I agree with Cameron. Nothing would beat a physical copy, really.

i always prefer a physical copy both on my ps3 and psp. it saves hard drive space for other things like movies, music or games that are exclusive to psn. also if i didnt like a game or i beat it i can always sell it as long as its a physical copy.

  7. megs1120 Says:

I agree, physical copies are better. Then again, Atlus games get rare and expensive really quick, so it’ll be nice to be able to buy one of their games for full price and have that money go to the developer than get it on ebay at twice its msrp and only give money to people who buy up copies to sell.

agreed with cameron. There needs to be greater incentive. When digital copies start coming with custom themes and ingame specials, we’ll see what happens to the market.
