PS3 Motion Controllers are a Gem

12/10/2009 Written by Josh Fernandes

You only need one wand.

When Microsoft unveiled its motion controls at E3, they were quick to give it a name, Natal. Sony on the other hand, did not give their motion control a name. Ever since E3, Sony fans have had to awkwardly refer to Sony’s project as Sony motion control or give the device their own informal nickname. As of this morning, Sony motion control may have gotten its own cool nickname.

Today at the UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference, John Riccitiello, CEO of Electronic Arts, commented on Sony’s and Microsoft’s motion control. While talking about pricing and innovation, John said this:

“In the coming year, both Sony and Microsoft have announced new controllers. Motion sensor controls, Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace,”

Now, Gem could be just a codename for Sony’s motion control or the actual name. If Gem were just a codename for the device, it would be strange that Sony would have kept it secret all this time. When IGN asked Sony about the name, Sony replied,

“No official name for the PlayStation motion controller has been announced.”

IGN also contacted EA, and they were unable to verify the accuracy of Riccitiello’s statement. It is unclear if Riccitiello simply misspoke when refereeing to Sony’s motion control. It’s quote possible that EA has their own informal nickname for the device, like how many have been calling it the “wand”. Hopefully in the coming months, Sony’s motion control will finally get its own identity.

They could bow to the motorcycle industry or the Japanese Ancient Weapons industry and call it “Katana” or some other blade type…

  2. Danicus says:

    Gem?

    Seriously?

    Like the cartoon?

    Ugh.

It better not be pink too.

  3. kRiMMeH says:

    blow pop spinning sucker wand!

  4. Danicus… What kind of life do you live where someone says “Gem” and you automatically think of something pink from a cartoon?

    Gems are just valuable stones….

I think they should just rip off Nintendo’s old codename for the Wii. The Revolution. :P Just for the lulz since they are going after Nintendo’s marketshare but that’s just me.

“Have you tried the Sony Motion Gem yet?”
“Have you tried the Sony Revolution yet?”
“Have you tried the Sony Gem yet?”

I wouldn’t put too much into EA calling it the Gem…for all we know it’s just what they call it around the office. They don’t know what else to call it yet so instead of walking around the office talking about the progress on whatever “Sony Motion controller” projects they’re working on they walk around saying “what’s the progress report on the new gem project” (a lot less of a mouthful)…I personally don’t think that Gem is the best they can do and it sounds sort of feminine like sequins and glitter so I hope the final name is something else.

It’s not that bad of a name and makes sense when you think of it. PS Eye looks at the Gem. Gems (as in precious stones) are typically very eye catching. How can you not put that together? XD

  7. @giese095

yea having to say “sony motion control” every time is a chore so it is most likely EA’s nickname for the device. the ps2 motion control was named Eyetoy, the ps3 was named PS3 Eye, so this wlll probably be similar to that.

super hyper fabulous fantastic motion controlling glowing ball… on a stick. wuhooo..

i like to call it the ps3 stick.

i thought GEM to…. from that old cartoon . its called association .. like MakaiOokami : Okami game…… plus the motion control looks like a microphone > movement >Gem cartoon … GEM is the name of the chick band.. has nothing to do with PINK like her hair color. thats your mental association to it

  10. I like to call it Vibe. Has a nice ring to it.

    Playstation Vibe

    @ Danicus

You say that like it’d be a bad thing!

I’ve never heard of a cartoon with a singer with pink hair, named Gem… So that’s why I was wondering where he lives (I typoed when I put what kind of life)

Actually Makai is from the Makai Senki Disgaea series, and Ookami is from the game Okami (with a little line over the O)

I add the second o because it’s too much hassle to deal with a line over the O and the line just means that you hold it out slightly longer, so putting the second O would be like a more phonetic spelling of it. Also I figured giving it the extra O would allow me to use it for more sites. I have probably like 100 MakaiOokami sites on the internet by now and sometimes MakaiOkami was actually taken by someone else.

Getting back on topic though I just have never heard of this cartoon with the pink haired gem character so which country was this show airing and what was it called?

    @ Makai

    he means this:

even i spelled it wrong its JEM and the holograms but people think GEM.. and the fact that you said pink.. was her hair color.. she also transformed but i cant find a video.. its an old 80s American cartoon by hanna barbera..There enemies are the misfits. They were popular because of there bad girl style, the other girls kinda sucked until they found there power and jessica turned into Jem when she transformed. (fast fowarded an episode for the info) and her dad left her a living computer that produced the holograms over there body (which helped her disguise herself or project images)

i barly remember seeing this since i saw a random rerun in the 90′s when i was 8..when she activated her powers “sailor moon style” her earings would transform her into a rocker.. this was waaaaaaaaay before sailor moon btw. i just saw a guys comment and he said “Synergy” which was her way of transforming and creating holografic music videos with that power.. the intro shows her transform and when every they played music the holograms would appear..apparently they had dolls and it was popular

    @ Maki

for 80s animation they move real as hell its crazy.

  15. JackC8 says:

My first thought was that cartoon as well. Ibanez makes a line of guitars called Gem too. Well, Jem actually. It’s what Steve Vai plays.

But they’ll always be “stick with ball on end” to me.

  16. All you guys are old as hell!!! I have never heard of that cartoon!!! :P

  17. shadowjin says:

    @gator

how old are you? 12? im 25 and ive seen that in old school reruns on TV just how some people are seeing bewitched, lucy, Xena, thudercats, Akira, Beverly hills 90210, silverhawks etc now like its new. lol…

  18. SteelFox says:

i thought of Jem to! lol and im 23.. the classic cartoon network plays that. “Truly Outrageous” is the name for one of the achievements in the game Borderlands. Jem is a classic!

  19. Killer6 says:

that was a hot cartoon back in the days! …hannah montana is still trying to reach her toes! too bad miley couldn’t be as outrageous as Jem and the Holograms! I grew up with that show. im 32 and they had lunch boxes, dolls, cds, Christmas specials, shirts! i thought of Jem the moment i read that title. PAZAZZ FROM THE MISFITS IS THAT FUCKING CRAZY!! poping out of a man hole singing WE ARE THE MISFITS! in the Jem into. haha

  20. wtGp says:

and u think the wii was a better name? Who cares what its called

  21. SolidCake_ says:

I want it to be called Mr. Big Knob :-)

  22. spectyre says:

Jem would be a cool name. Then Sony’s nunchuck peripheral could be called “Scout”.

  23. Max Murray says:

    @ solid
will children who play with it then be known as knob goblins?

Im in for Gem, and I for one think it will be the new name. That’s too strange of a title for them to just ‘come up with it’
    90% sure it’s final
