EA Sports Putting the Shutdown on Their Servers

01/04/2010 Written by Cameron Teague

Well it looks like EA is tired of providing servers to those people who have yet to upgrade to their newer franchises as they have announced that they will be closing many of their servers on February 2nd across the PS3, 360 and PC.  Can’t really say that I blame them as it is expensive to maintain servers and if you don’t feel there is enough of a community to warrant it or your needing the resources for newer games, it makes sense.

Most of the games on the list I can agree with as they are 3 years old but the one that really jumps out at you is Madden 09 for both the PS3 and 360.  Usually support for these sports games last more than a year but EA has decided to go ahead and close it down.

  • UEFA Champions League 07 PC and x360
  • Facebreaker x360 and PS3
  • Fantasy Football 09 x360 and PS3
  • FIFA 07 PSP, PS2, PC

  • Madden 08 Wii
  • Madden 08 PC
  • Madden 09 Xbox1
  • Madden 09 Wii and PSP
  • March Madness 07 x360
  • NBA 07 PSP, x360
  • NBA 08 PS2, PSP, Wii
  • NBA 09 Wii – Europe only
  • NBA Street (2007) PS3 and x360

  • NCAA Football 09 PS2
  • NASCAR 08 PS2

If any of these games having online play was marketed as a selling point then EA should not touch those servers. They will end up having a big law suit on their hands. Can you imagine the backlash if the servers for games like COD, Halo, or UT, or Killzone were just all of the sudden shut down.

    @solo

if there not played enough shut them down.. MW2, COD and halo arent listed so its pointless to bring those up. Even if its marketed as online playable they have the right to alter them and you still have the offline play..

they should add an update that would remove the online achievement / trophies. I cant stand online trophies specifically for that reason.. your reliant on a guy that might DC or the servers shut down. DBZ raging blast has a flawless online but very few people online..

    I see everything going P2P.

Well if solo13 has the funds then he should shoot them to EA Sports to keep the servers running so he can play at will. If not then read your EULA notice the print that says that any company reserves the right to modify game play access at there leisure, ie when they loose money maintaining the servers for players that are no longer interested in playing online.

Or maybe those who cry that online is forever would pay for the forever access like XBL, and even that service shuts down games that show little or no interest for their online component.

So suck it up an move on to the new generation of games now available…

  6. Yeah lets compare a company that has like 30 online games currently to the most popular online games of this gen whose makers have maybe 1 or 2 other active games.

I know for sure most of those games don’t have online trophies, actually, I think most of the 09 and earlier games don’t have trophies at all, but if they did i don’t think ea in a million years would be able to patch that many games in a short timespan lol.

I’m going to file this under, “not an issue”.
