Going with Microsoft an ‘Epic’ Failure
There is no doubt that analyst, Michael Pachter, is well known throughout the gaming community for his predictions. Some of these have been good, and others have been completely off. Then again no one can be right 100% of the time. During a recent Game Trailers Bonus Round,Pachter, along with two others, were asked a some interesting questions pertaining to multiplatform games. This led to Pachter bringing up the Xbox 360 exclusive Gears of War titles. Read on for more details.
Geoff Keighley asked if it made sense for publishers to release single platform titles. Pachter responded with this:
Absolutely not, and I think the Epic guys can’t wait until they can start doing multiplatform games
Keighley then asked Pachter if he suspected that Gears of War might go multiplatform. Pachter replied:
I don’t. I think that Microsoft has a contract to make sure that they get that sequel, But I think Epic regrets signing that contract. You’re up to 11 million PS3 in the US and probably similar number in Europe, you got a 20 million addressable market with a game like Gears of War, I mean that thing would easily sell 3 or 4 million on the PS3; that’s a lot of profit.

Patcher is a Tool and a Dumb A$$ if Epic Games has a chance to get games on the PS3 they will I would rather want Gears than Halo on Ps3 any day.

This is pretty old seeing EPIC has responded with the lolz already.
The reason Pachter is being laughed at is because EPIC negotiated and signed the GEARS of WAR deal when SONY was completely dominating the console market. This was prior to even the 360’s launch so you should be seeing the lolz. I’ll continue for those still not getting.
Going back to when the GEARS deal was signed you will see that EVERY analyst expected SONY to continue dominating the industry with the PS3. It wasn’t just analysts predicting PS3’s dominance it was virtually EVERYONE. Prior to this generation, If you would have suggested the PS3 would be 2nd in marketshare you’d be laughed. If you suggested the PS3 would be last they would have locked you up in a padded room wearing a strait jacket.
Epic signed an exclusive deal with MS knowing the PS3 would have the larger install base. Of course we all know now that Sony’s dominance is no longer. Looking back it would appear that EPIC was brilliant in seeing that it would be MS and not Sony that would lead in install base numbers and overall software sales.
Pachter is essentially saying EPIC is kicking themselves for developing an exclusive franchise that has sold millions.

Your right about most of that, but there is one thing you missed on.

It had nothing to do with them thinking MS would be in the lead over Sony, it’s all the $$$ they got from MS in the deal that they didn’t care who would be in the lead.

While Microsoft does have the overall software sales, I believe I read sometime last year that SONY took over the install base numbers for worldwide. Microsoft is just dominating the US market, in EU they are pretty much dead even, and in Japan SONY is just smashing Microsoft into the dirt and sh*tting on them.

Edit – it was actually Europe that SONY took over…so it is just the US market where Microsoft has like an 8 million console lead…Japan the PS3 to XBOX 360 ratio is 5/1.

Of course epic proberly regret it now, take Activision they’ve got the Instrument Hero and Call of duty franchise selling in the millions seeing as they’ve got only multiformat games.

The 360 will not be dominating anything when this console generation is over, GUARANTEED!, just to clear the air on that subject and Epic games did make a colossal mistake with launching Gears of War 1&2 on the 360 in MANY ways……..
Epic jumped the gun and signed a deal with M$ because at the time the 360 did have the larger install base(the ps3 launched shortly after GoW) because the 360 launched a year earlier and the tech was easier to work with at the time, logical and understandable and being that the 360 was cheaper and GoW was a fresh concept people would jump at the idea and the game would push units to combat the launch of the ps3 which launched too high and had a lacking starting line up of games. GoW1 & 2 sold well and pushed many units, however, Epic in doing the exclusive deal essentially ’signed a deal with the devil’ and gears of war 2 didn’t receive the funding, time and dedication from M$ that it would have from Sony…….In case any of you haven’t played GoW2 it’s a technical disasterpiece online because M$ didn’t provide any of the help like sony does for their first party developers i.e dedicated servers, testing and funding
So now Epic and what CliffyB calls his “Baby” will never live to their full potential while games like Uncharted 2 thrive simply because Sony is a BETTER PUBLISHER, IDK the ins and outs but i’ve heard rumors that M$ only had exclusivity for the first 2 games and if Epic can find a way to get GoW3 over to the ps3(Exclusively) it’d be a smart move for them and a saving grace…..
I was a huge fan of gears until until #2 came out worse in every way to the first one and that was a major factor in me selling my 360 as well………..

its not an epic failure. games on xbox(both generations) have sold very well statistically compared to other platforms. it was a wise decision. just cuz people own a ps3 doesnt mean they buy alot of games on it.

I wouldn’t go around making claims like that it’s anyone’s game and MS have just as a good a chance as SONY at the moment. Also who actually cares about Cliffy B the douche dosen’t even know how to shut the f**k up, he makes one good game and all of a sudden he’s f**king gaming jesus.

Honestly though GoW3 will probably go to 360 exclusively anyway and I honestly don’t care, Epic bombed GoW2 and 3 is doomed to be trash……my 3rd person shooter loving heart has been stolen by Uncharted 2 and GoW can’t have it back…..lmfao!

will even if epic put it on the PS3 i would still get it along with the first two Gears games on the 360, it shouldn’t appear on the PS3 because now PS3 gamers wouldn’t understand the storyline.

Umm, the 360 wasn’t beating the PS3 when the GEARS deal was made. THE 360 WASN’T EVEN OUT YET. Gears of War 1 released a year after the 360 was on the market(360-Nov 05, GoW Nov 06). So once again I remind you this deal was negotiated and signed when SONY COMPLETELY DOMINATED THE INDUSTRY with the PS2. This was also during the time Pachter GUARANTEED SONY’s marketshare dominance would continue on in this generation.
You know what nevermind, I just read the guy’s statement above where he suggests the PS3 has passed the 360’s overall install base. Seriously if you don’t even know the current marketshare situation you really shouldn’t be arguing here.

meh… sucks to be them. I played gears, and found that the entire time I kept thinking… “why can’t I jump?” … ohhh yeah, its 360. Jumping is too complicated. Then I played Uncharted 2,,, and said “hey! I can jump!” and its basically the same style of gameplay, but more well done in all respects. So, in conclusion, I could give a crap less about this coming to ps3. Let xbox have it, they need something to stay above the waterline…
