Yes, that’s right folks. Sega has officially announced that the mysterious ‘Project Needlemouse’ will, in-fact, make its grand appearance this Summer on the PSN in the form of Sonic The Hedgehog 4.
The thing is, this will only be episode 1, which looks like this game is going to come in installments over time on the PSN. There hasn’t been any more revealed other than the fact that it will be a 2D, side scrolling game with a 3D makeover. Sonic fans will be pleased to hear that their blue pal is finally getting the long awaited sequel he deserves. Sega has released the first trailer for the title which you can check out below.

This does look promising, although it’s quite unfortunate that the developers decided to use the sprites from Sonic Rush on the PSP, which made Sonic look like he was barely trying to run at all. Who knows, since we still have several months before the game’s release, maybe we’ll see some graphical changes here and there. Although I must say, even having just seen a small clip, the environment looks absolutely gorgeous, which really makes the wait that much harder!
Either way, based on this trailer, Sonic 4 is looking like a breath of fresh air. In an interview with GameSpot, Sega associate brand manager Ken Balough stated that Sonic 4 will feature classic Sonic style music with a modern twist. Sonic’s abilities will remain very much the same, with the addition of his typical homing attack, although we don’t yet know if this is the homing attack from the Sonic 3 era (which required a shield) or the new-age homing attack which can be done anywhere at anytime.
No price has been set just yet, but Sega will be revealing more details over next few weeks, so we’ll be sure to keep you all posted. In the meantime, why not let us know what your favorite Sonic title was, down in the comments? Heck, toss in some of your favorite Sonic moments while you’re at it!

Thats awesome, looking forward to this game. Sonic is one of the games that everyone knows and loves wether your were born in the 80′s or the 90′s. I can still remember playing those games on SEGA as a kid, I can hear the music in my head and remember all the boss battles. I cant wait to get ahold of this game.
awesome
Wait. What was that?
Oh.
My head exploding, that’s all.
Um..Not to burst the fan boyish bubble of those scared of change, but this is not amazing. We are at a new era, we should move forward not backwards.
It’s because of this fan boyish crap that they continue to take our money without putting in work.
Look at this, it’s the same game from 1997 with 3d plastered over it and yet, you guys are in ow?
This game better be 50cents.
They need to stop trying to take the easy road, bring back the 3d free roaming and do it right. (side note: Sonic’s so quick he runs u walls – problems fixed)
Stop with the racing game crap and if I see one more Olympic game where Mario and Sonic run the same speed, I’m hunting someone for breakfast
@freestylinyoshi#
I dont think people cares what you say, your comment wont stop people buying classic games on PSN store, Well @freestylinyoshi# you go Forward, and i go backward to those games i never played before, I bought Tomb raider, Tomb raider2, Resisdent evil and Resident evil2 on PSN those games i huge fan of them, so you got ploblem with that ?
@yoshi – having the ability to enjoy the classic games we grew up with doesn’t make us fanboys, it makes us nostalgic. Slight difference. Assuming that you can understand that, then maybe you can understand why after several iterations of failed 3D versions of this franchise, people get excited about returning to the roots. No… thats a poor assumption, so I’ll spell it out. It gives hope that after a good franchise has been completely run into the ground and beaten to death with its own bloody leg, it might still be able to stand back up and deliver us some fun times again. When changing a successful formula destroys the fun and kills the sales, its time to look back at what worked, and why. Sometimes the simple things are more fun and pleasurable. Here’s hoping against all odds that they get it right this time.
@freestyle.
Apparently you haven’t heard about the concept of improvement. Fans and developers have honed in on this phenomenon and can use it to make something old new and exciting. Your statement concludes to:
2D<3D
You're going to start pissing off a lot of people, especially a few on this site who are big fans of 2D style games (I know for a fact Xael is all about 2D fighters), and to state that the way of the future is 3D style only is asinine.
Most likely Sega looked at the success of Megaman 9, a PHENOMENAL sequel to the original series and realized fans would love to see this reinstated with other classic games. Have you played MM9? Can you REALLY say that the game is a rip off because they put no work into it? That's absurd.
Now I'm not saying Sonic 4 is going to be the greatest Sonic, and they're going to have to break a lot of barriers they themselves have made to win back the support of their old fans, but ultimately it's going to be us, the people who have been calling for this for years, that judge whether Sonic 4 is a true successor the the original Sonic series. If it flops, It flops. People aren't going to pay money for something they know isn't worth it, and those sales will be reflected to Sega, and the message will be sent loud and clear.
But why would you say returning to their roots is "the easy way out", when every Sonic fan has wanted nothing more than a true successor to Sonic 3?!
Ridiculous.
Hmmmmmmmmmm I wanna be happy about this but I know nothing will ever beat sonic 3. We’ll have to wait and see how they play this off.
@freestyle
Read what you put again now slap yourself. Good. This is what we want, the fans of sonic want a throw back to the old days becasue 3D has done NOTHING to improve Sonic. I bet your the some moron who in a few years will bitch when he sees a movie that’s not in 3D, just becasue there’s new technology dosen’t mean it needs to be overused.
as joinsideke said every sonic fans wants a true successor to Sonic 3. Also i understand why it want it to cost 50 cents that being the same price as your pride and dignity.
I welcome this…I think this is finally one way to make a new Sonic without screwing it up! As long as it looks similar to the originals this will be a day one purchase for me.
I’m pretty excited. I bought the Sega collection for the PS3 simply for the Sonic games (though the others were fantastic, too). If this is done well, I think it could really be a fantastic game.
@joinsideke
ain’t that the truth lol.
I am excited about this game, I’ve only truly enjoyed Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and have that game deeply embeded in my psyche. Those BGM’s are CLASSIC! But I must point out something in this article that the trailer too caught my attention, and thats how Sonic looks when he runs in this 3D version. I never heard of Sonic Rush for the PSP but I will be sure to check that game out in terms of reviews and gameplay footage, I must say though I’m not impressed with how Sonic looks when runs, because it looks like he’s not even trying, exactly as the author of this article depicted. I too hope that something can be done about that. We need not only for Sonic to go back to his 2D roots but to also completely immerse us in the feel that this is the fastest mammal in the planet! And that this will be the fastest experience you will encounter with Sonic making it a TRUE successor to Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Unfurtunately though these Sonic sprites they’re using just isn’t doing it. Still I am really HYPED about this game and I’m hopeful that SEGA knows what they’re doing with this game. As it stands this is a 1st day buy for me.
One last thing, I’m leaving freestylinyoshi alone for now with that ignorant statement, but you better believe if freestylinyoshi says something ignorant about any upcoming SSFIV articles, and I will have some EDUCATING to do.
hahaha^
I will completely agree with you on that Xael. The old school sprites were choice, and I’m just not feeling the new ones. They could easily update them to a crisper 3D style of the old sprites, but maybe they’re using the updated image of Sonic in order to try to bring people around…
But is anyone else just not a fan of it either? Maybe it’s how long they’ve made his hair or the speed thing (or maybe because nothing tops the original 3, and when I think about the blue hedgehog, I think of him how he SHOULD be represented), but it’s the only area of criticism I really have- not a deal breaker though.
Regardless, I know they must be getting a lot of slack about it on their forums, or at least I assume since noone seems to like it.
You guys have me all wrong. I’m a fan of classics, but I’m no fan of a classic’s with minor altercations.
TMNT (good but too short) , Street Fighter 4 ( same game, now everyone’s on roids) and so on.
What I mean to say is, if youre going to put roids (3D) in everything and call it new . Then it isn’t I who deserves a slap in the face.
Not everything works/looks appealing in 3D especially if you just going to overlap a game and call it new.
Ok, you know what. I’ll shut my trap on that. A revised version on FF7 could do some justice., But are you really going to tell me your going to buy the same Sonic game twice because they gave him some nikes?
I guess I’m agreeing with Join
Actually, insert foot in mouth. It’s a Down-loadable – didn’t see that. No problems here
@freestylinyoshi
alright dude, I tried to warn you, but noooo in your “attempt” to save yourself, you go ahead and say something ignorant about SF.
Obviously with that ridiculously dumb statement about “Street fighter 4 just being same game with everyone on roids” you obviously don’t know anything about the game. Like I mean seriously? I know it’s your opinion and all, but don’t state such nonsense like that to expect any kind of agreement with anyone.
Well it’s time to EDUCATE. The differences between Street Fighter 4 and Street Fighter II are more than just cosmetic, and obviously anyone who even remotely knows anything about Street Fighter are well aware of that. Focus attacks, focus attack cancel, Ultra moves, combo’s that can’t be done in SFII, grab breaks, ex moves.
Each Street Fighter iteration has always shown them muscular, it’s more apparent now in Street Fighter 4 because of the technical aspect of it, you can show more detail in those 3D sprites than in the animated sprites. And even with each animated 2D game iteration you can see more and more detail in their muscular silluattes, from SFII to the Alpha series to SFIII, the only character who was “slim” was Remy and maybe Oro, but nevertheless everyone was ripped and fit. I’m sure you don’t even know anything about SFIII of the characters in them
I don’t care what anyone says, this has me excited. I loved playing Sonic when I was 4 and on and on. I bought the Genesis collection exclusively for Sonic when it came out last year. This is going on my buy list no matter what (after seeing gameplay and trailers of course). I am pretty excited and going to bet Sonic 1-3 again now.
I’d buy that for a dollar!
