Kratos Was Originally to be a Pathetic Little Elf

02/16/2010 Written by Joseph Peterson

Ever since Kratos made his presence felt on the PlayStation 2 back in 2005, the series has become synonymous with the PlayStation name. With God of War III, the Ghost of Sparta is taking his fury to a new level of brutality. However, had it not been for a much needed change, Kratos may not have been so tough…

Recently Ken Feldman sat down with PlayStation: The Official Magazine to discuss some of the choices that had to be made when creating the Kratos character:

I think it took us a year and a half to come up with Kratos. That was the most difficult thing.

Everything has to be based around this character – the story, the weapons. The first guy we came up with was a little elf character, he was hysterical. His animations looked like Disney.

It the end, there could have only been pixie dust. Thank the gods that didn’t happen and Kratos turned out to be the icon of PlayStation that he is.

Yes, it is almost impossible to imagine Kratos as a Disney-like character, let alone an elf. How many of you would have checked out God of War with Kratos as an elf?

“SANTA!!! The elf you once enslaved has returned… to KILL you! I make toys no more!”

I can totally see an elf Kratos killing a colossal Frosty, ripping off Rudolph’s nose, and getting busy with Mrs. Claus and her hot sister in the minigame called “Rocking the Sleigh, Ringing My Bells”. Then he would take on the big, “jolly when killing” man himself.

Joking aside, I would like to see these concepts myself.

  6. yea thats interesting, they had nothing like that in the concept art shown in the GOW1 disc. They did show that they had multiple weapon ideas, which later made it into GOW2, but all have paled compared to his blades of chaos/athena.

The year and a half they spent making Kratos was WELL worth it imo!

ummm…. I guess no one played the first God of War, because it’s in the bonus content. At least the old character model which was a knight or something. Shows it from behind, so it could be the elf they speak of, it’s nothing close to the Kratos you see now.
