FFVII Remake Possible if Developement Time is Very Brief

02/21/2010 Written by Dan Massi

A Final Fantasy VII remake has been rumored for years. Ever since the technical demo for PS3 was shown, PS3 fans have been clamoring for a PS3 version of the classic RPG. However,  it seems that the remake will never happen. Recently, a glimpse of hope has appeared.

Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase has revealed that he’s interested in doing a remake for Final Fantasy VII. Although, he’ll only do it if it takes one year for development.

“If it were possible that we had all the right facilities and the right environment to be able to make and prepare a Final Fantasy VII remake within a year, we’d very much like a go at it! But even Final Fantasy XIII has taken over three and a half years to create. If we were to recreate final Fantasy VII with the same level of graphical detail as you see in Final Fantasy XIII, we’d imagine that that would take as much as three or four times longer than the three and a half years it has taken to put this Final Fantasy together! So it’s looking pretty unrealistic! But if any such situation came about by any remote chance, then yes, we’d do it!”

Would you buy a remake of Final Fantasy VII? Or are you against it?

  1. I would buy a Final Fantasy VII in a heartbeat.

  2. dmdragon says:

I don’t know why they are so against making this. I honesly believe that they could remake this, charge full price for it and still sell more copies than FFXIII so who cares if it takes as long as it took to make FFXIII

  3. snir1400 says:

    Final Fantasy VII Remake NEVER/
In spite of that many people expect to the this, this will not happen :(

    And Dan check your email…

  4. Meghterb says:

Yeah of course I’d buy it. But it’s gonna take a LONG time to develop it.

  5. unicronic says:

Amazing that despite the demand for a FF7 remake that Square-Enix still don’t get it.

  6. KwietStorm says:

Why would they even say that? Shinra itself couldn’t remake Final Fantasy VII in a year.

  7. Sizzler7 says:

I don’t get why they keep bringing it up, it can’t happen in 1yr they are just messing with fans.

  8. JackC8 says:

Even if it took them three times as long as XIII, they’d probably still make a ton of money off of it. And after all they’ve made with people downloading way over a million copies of it on PSN, which must have been pure profit for them, they could get a pretty good start on it. All I get form their comment about doing it in less than a year is that they couldn’t be bothered with spending more time than that just to please their fans.

Anyhow, sounds like there’s no way they could get it done in this console generation, and I don’t imagine they know anything about programming for the PS4, so it’s a mute point.

  9. DD34 says:

    I would definitely buy it!

  10. victorinox says:

    @ jack

its a “moot” point, not mute =P

    on topic

i still fail to see why people want this… as ive said with the ico pack and the god of war pack, the originals are good enough we should encourage devs to be lazy and just remake titles i mean trophies + better design would be nice, but its hardly anything im gonna care more than a second about…

final fantasy VII isnt gonna change just because it got a graphics revamp so i much rather see the classic than a redo because thats all it needs

  11. 9-12 years to remake Final Fantasy VII? Reaaallly?

  12. i dont understand why people are so against a FFVII remake. For the fans of FFVII we are not expecting any gameplay change just the graphics. The graphics would just make a better experience all together.

As long as their is a demand for a remake I dont see Square-Enix not doing it. I think they are just going to milk it as long as possible. This is a business and what i’ve seen from Sq-Enix in the past years is that they like money.

  13. megs1120 says:

If they’re going to do it, they should probably do it on the PSP.

  14. Xael says:

SquareEnix are now being ridiculous with that statement. I read in an article somewhere that after they finished with Final Fantasy XIII, other games won’t take as long because now they’ll be building off the FFXIII foundation. FFXIII is completely new to this gen so they had to start from the ground up and from scratch. So in this article that I’ve read development would take less time than it took for FFXIII this time around. I mean it’s not like they don’t have the character models for FFVII, they did a whole movie on it for crying out loud. FF versus XIII won’t take long to finish now because everyone can now concentrate on working on it and having laid the groundwork for XIII it should be a much quicker process. So now what? Are they contradicting themselves? Or are they just wanting to bullshit us out of a remake because they don’t want to make it PS3 exclusive, since SONY did publish FFVII for the PSone!

  15. fandeej says:

i’ll def buy it, but I guess that I have so many good memories that I’ll not want them to be ruined if they release it in just a year just so that they can say to the fans, “YOU WANTED, YOU GOT IT” either do it well or keep the good memories

  16. Torankusu says:

So wait, they’re saying it’ll take close to 12 years to make Final Fantasy VII? Blasphemy, shenanigans, bullshit.

  17. Nootfloosh says:

How is there any “glimpse of hope” in that statement? He said if they could do it in a year they would, but in the next breath said that it would take as much time as FFXIII. That sounds like a resounding “no” to me.

    @ Skullking123

I’m a huge FF fan, and VII was the first one in the series that I played (along with a lot of other gamers), but you should know if you grew up playing RPG’s that graphics aren’t everything. In fact, they’re one of the least important things about an RPG.

Just prettying up FFVII with next gen graphics would be an insult to what a landmark game it was 13 years ago in the first place. Please, leave it alone. We don’t need all the guns in the game replaced with walkie-talkies (any South Park fans out there should understand what I’m talking about).

  18. with all the spinoffs and milking they have done with FFVII, its amazing that they have yet to remake the game.

  19. wtGp says:

like l said before in the ico pack and the GoW collection a remake is a great idea for Final Fantasy 7. Fans want it and judging by demand, Final Fantasy 7 would probably outsell FF13 if it is ever created

  20. shadowjin says:

    @wtg

they mean FULL REMAKE not some GOW 1 and 2 made compatible with the PS3 but not receiving any visual make overs like music, graphics etc… they mean make it like FF13 graphics style not GOW collection.. also ff7 is in the PSN.

  21. @megs1120

If you own a ps3 and a copy of the original for ps1 you can remote play it on your psp.

  22. I would buy it and pay any price (even with my soul). The game was an utter masterpiece. To get that same story and game play with better graphics and music would be outstanding. I dont understand why it would take 12 years to remake it, That time frame seems a bit excessive.
This will probably be like Konami’s “we are thinking about / we wont add trophies to Metal Gear Solid 4″. Unless SE gets overwhelmed with fan mail (and I talking a SHIT-TON of mail) they will not take up this endeavor… and even then, they probably will ignore our desire for a great remake of one of the best games ever made.
