And the Secret Game Is… SOCOM 4

03/04/2010 Written by Kyle P.

For days gamers have been eagerly awaiting GameTrailers unveiling tonight of the “surprise Sony sequel“. However, the guys at Zipper Interactive took the liberty themselves, and revealed the game on the PlayStation Blog. This game may not have been what many gamers expected, but it will be a welcome addition to a long-standing series.

Zipper Interactive is looking to, once again, prove they are the masters of the tactical shooter. Socom 4 is scheduled to hit PS3s later this year. Unlike Confrontation, which was handled by Slant Six, not Zipper, Socom 4 will boast both a singleplayer and an online component. No one better can explain the premise of the game, other than Zipper Senior Community Manager Jeremy Dunham:

As the Ops Com, your mission is to command an elite five-man squad charged with stopping his aggressive agenda before it’s too late. In only six days, you must lead your team through a hostile jungle and urban environments against an army of well-armed rebel insurgents that completely outnumber you.

If that setup doesn’t whet your appetite enough, you should also be pleased to know that in addition to the SOCOM’s single-player operation, players will also be able to enjoy a 32-person multiplayer mode that boasts more Special Forces units than ever before!

Zipper made clear that throughout the game development and release, the studio’s earlier release, MAG, will still be 100% supported. Later tonight, on GameTrailers TV, the world premiere trailer will be shown. In fact, GameTrailer TV’s Geoff Keighley just posted on his twitter account, the following message:

Reveal trailer for SOCOM 4 from Zipper tonight on GTTV. This is a real full-blown SOCOM.

This certainly gets us excited here at PlayStation LifeStyle. Are you excited this ‘mystery game’ was indeed Socom 4? What game would you rather have it been? Post your responses in the comments section below.

Definitely excited about this, and the fact Zipper has this under control again. Confrontation was a bit of a let down, but still a fun game.

There are a lot of other games it could have been, but this works for me for now. I’m sure they have some other big ones to drop over the coming months, hopefully one of which is EatSleepPlay’s new game.

    hummm…
why not, afterall it’s one of the best, OMG i think after FB, FPS would be my next move!

what else did i miss !?

  3. I still wish it was Syphon Filter… I’ve had enough of these head on military shooters. Can’t complain too much, at least you can sneak a bit in Socom…

Glad to have a ‘real’ SOCOM game back and made by Zipper. Hopefully it turns out really good. If it is being released later this year then I am kind of curious how far they are into production and how well it will be done. And its interesting they would release it so soon after MAG.

-_-…thats all i have to say

  6. Psmgamer says:

Socom 4 is a surprise I was thinking Zipper was too busy with MAG. I was expecting maybe a Socom Confrontation 2 by Slant Six or a Little Big Planet 2.

  7. I’ve never played a SOCOM game, but man, this sure looks pretty. I liked what I read in that IGN article they linked to too.

  8. I was expecting Killzone 3. I’m a little disappointed. Haven’t been into a SOCOM game since the PS2. That was a loooong time ago for me. And now I wont be watching GTTV tonight. Back to Uncharted 2.

  9. UMMMMM…..you’d think they’d have their hands a little tied up with MAG?

  10. I tried to tell you guys it was S4…

    Peace,
    VG

  11. Foxy007 says:

they gotta work hard for this one

  12. Xael says:

Man SONY is being ambitious here. They are prepping Q4 already, I hope it pays off, I’m sure GT5 will sell a lot of consoles so by the time Socom 4 and all these other games like Killzone 3 and Resistance 3 comes out, they won’t have to compete against each other for sales. Instead they can all enjoy a healthy dose

  13. Looking back to the the old Socom titles(especially the first one), this has huge potential. I remember being able to speak commands through the microphone it came with, and your team would follow orders. Ahh, good times. As long as they focus on making a solid single player campaign, maybe even with co-op, this is going to be a sweet game.

BUT again my thought of this

    WOW….WOW…..WOW.

I\’M FCUKING BLOWN AWAY. maybe it will be good enough to get some of the real socom players/vets back because confrontation suks major donkey kcid.. i mean socom confrontation is the worst piece of sh-t game called socom. i wish slant six would get bomb by terrorist. But again I didn’t expect this but then again who didn’t see it coming. In my friends opinion Socom: Confrontation wasn’t that good he didn’t really like it. Hes an avid player of that, I did play it though and collect all trophy aswell.

This is great news for me…of course I would have been excited about any of the games that were suggested as the “surprise” but I loved the first SOCOM, never played the second, and was disappointed that the last effort was online only. Just the description of the single player campaign made me think of how amazing the first game was and I can’t wait for Zipper to renew this great franchise the way it always should have been done…In my opinion this could be way better than MW2 or BC2 if the game is at the same caliber as the first SOCOM.

  15. This made my day…an awesome sequel is in the hands of the original developers of the series that got me into gaming! :]

  16. Seeing as SOCOM is my #1 game franchise I am more than excited. I knew it was coming sooner or later, glad to see its sooner.

  17. meh.. was hoping for something bigger and better..

  18. xST-ANGERx says:

Can we have a single player game revolving around hunting down and torturing Seth Luisi before shooting him in the thighs leaving him to bleed to death for making Confrontation so SHIT!

I will not put the word SOCOM in front of Confrontation from now on, because let’s be honest, it isn’t a SOCOM game, its a big heap of steaming pig shit that even flies wouldn’t touch. It’s a half-baked 3rd person shooter that used the SOCOM name to fool us all into buying it.

But a Zipper made SOCOM is exactly what i want. They know what it’s all about, and i just hope that they make massive maps again just like Combined Assault and the 3rd game (albeit with the option to scale them down if desired). Hopefully it’ll re-unite my clan again too, cos i really miss the gd ole days! :D
