God of War III Becomes God of Metacritic
God of War III‘s embargo lifted today, resulting in an endless batch of reviews, most of which are perfect-including PlayStation LifeStyle’s. With all the exquisite praise the PlayStation 3 exclusive title is receiving, it has become a “God” on Metacritic, reaching a landmark feat in such a short space of time.
In only its first day of obtaining reviews, God of War III has entered in an incredible position on Metacritic‘s ‘All-Time High Scores‘ list. The Santa Monica Studio epic is sitting in 8th position, only a few hours since the embargo was destroyed with the countless reviews for the title.
As you can see, it matches the metascore of Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4. There are only two PlayStation 3 exclusive above the critically-acclaimed title, with LittleBigPlanet and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves receiving 95 and 96 respectively.
Don’t expect the game to be sitting on the eighth spot for too long, as more reviews will inevitably be pouring in during the coming days before God of War III’s release, and of course after the game releases from March 16th onwards.

Killzone 2 is the 19th highest?! That’s awesome! I love the game, but there was so much hate for it out there. That makes me happy.
On the other hand, it makes me sick to see GTA IV sitting on top. I know everyone has their own tastes, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out why people liked that game so much.
I think its hilarious that Nosferatu King made a post making fun of KnighTomiC before Knigh even posted.
Not to rain on anybody’s parade, but the “All time high score list” in the list is only for PS3 games, so no Xbox exclusives there even if they had scored perfect 100s.

I averaged games that had scored differently on both lists.
So, 4 PS3 exclusives and 6 Xbox exclusives… (5? Is the Orange Box available on PS3?). Seems that both consoles have great games available, which is what every “true” gamer should want. Competition is good, right?

Seeing Grand Theft Auto IV on top shows how much faith you should put into review scores….none.
Most games sites are never honest about popular game title releases (GTA, FF. CoD, Halo, etc).
They always give these games top score no matter how poor the game and in turn do a disservice to all gamers because without criticism games won’t change. People like Bethesda will just keep re-skinning their crappy engine over and over again as long as they keep getting perfect scores.
The devs of GTA need to be told that it’s a world of crime, not a world of keep your cousin happy by going bowling. It’s a shame that Zero Punctuation was the only place that called out GTA on making a crappy game….generally Yahtzee hates everything so it was expected, but he was right.
Not to be all negative because there are some great games on that list as well and hopefully now some people will try them out. Can’t wait to get my hands on God of War 3.
Geez,and God of War III hasn’t even been released yet. Once it’s released, I’m sure it’ll be in the top 5,if not top 3.
Well I just hope it does get bumped higher eventually, places like GameTrailers, IGN, and Gamespot have all disappointed me. =\

GTA4 came out 2 years ago. At the time, it was pretty amazing. It probably wouldn’t score as high if it came out now. I’d guess it’s the same thing with having Guitar Hero 2 there but not Rock Band 2… I’m more surprised at seeing Braid and Peggle there. Good games, certainly, but somehow not in the same league as the rest of the big boys.
Comparing games only by scores across all genres and categories is a bit silly to start off with, anyway. Had I included Wii games too, we’d have Super Mario Galaxy at the #2 spot. I can think of a hell of a lot of lower scoring game I’d much rather play than SMG.

You say that like there is a general understanding that GTA IV is undeserving if its score, or that everyone feels the same way about it. I love the game, and I personally feel that people cried foul a little too much, so should I too not take a word of review scores with any faith?

Yes, lets forget The Orange Box was released on the PS3… I do own both systems and at one time the PS3 did suffer from games, this is NOT an excuse anymore.
After playing the GoW: Collection, and the GoW3 Demo… I can see WHY it’s getting rave reviews.
GTAIV is good but compared to GTAIII, it felt smaller in scale with content. I mean so you can go in some buildings, but the Helicopter can’t shoot missiles?
it’s the little things like that, that to some people make the game feel undeserved of it’s praise.
GTA IV was a step back from GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas. Were the graphics a little better? Yeah, but only because it’s the newest game. When you compare the graphics to other games that released at the same time they look like crap in comparison. The gameplay remained the same essentially, which is good. My main problem with the game was that it was completely bug ridden. I don’t think I’ve ever played a game considered ‘AAA’ that was as full of bugs as GTAIV. Overall was the game good? Yeah, but no were near the score’s it got. Maybe an 85 at best.
I won’t say GTAIV wasn’t deserving of a good score, but the highest score of all time?? That is ridiculous and completely undeserved. I remember IGN giving it a 10 for graphics…not even close. Sure you can make the excuse saying it’s a sandbox game and so the graphics can’t be as great as Uncharted 2 or something like that, but that would be like saying MAG deserved a 10 in graphics because it looked great for trying to put 256 players into one game…it just isn’t right. By the way I love MAG so I’m not trying to insult it.

Seeing MGS3 in the 9th place just hurt my feelings lol. I prefer it over all the games. It’s good to see GoW III doing great, I’m not really a big fan of it but after checking the reviews, I might get it.

its nots really 6/5 360 exclusives tho, exclusives must mean i have to own a 360 to be able to play it which isnt true for mass effect 2 and gears of war.
God of war 3 does look insane, cant wait for the demo to finish downloading, just have to manage my time between heavy rain, assassins creed 2, pes 2010 and then god of war 3 tough times :p

@Pookie – I was surprised too to see braid up there, but it is a really well made game in all respects… just short, but priced for it too so thats nice.
Everyone else – I whole heartedly agree that GTA4 doesn’t deserve to be on that list, and by being there shows how meaningless these numbers are… GTA4 was a shining example of how rehashing a series time and time again will eventually lead to utter failure – a cookie cutter formula is bad for the video games industry. This is why it hurts me to see that, and MW2, get good reviews or make that list. I’m glad that the guys making GOW3 have made it very apparent that they are aware of this, and have no intentions of moving on to making another immediately.
yeah pookie is right this is a ps3 only list….sorry to break the momentum but mass effect 2 is 96 on metacritic with one 75 and the others all above 90….and god of war 3 already has some 80s and it will have more.
GTA IV is surely overhyped….i’m not a fan-boy of any platform but i personally like MGS 4 and Mass Effect 2 more
