Sony Says PS3 FFXIII is “The Way it Was Meant to be Played”

03/09/2010 Written by Jonathan Leack

When it was announced almost two years ago that Final Fantasy XIII was no longer a Sony exclusive, many fans of the platform were enraged. Final Fantasy has been a flagship series for the PlayStation platform since 1997 with the release of the almighty Final Fantasy VII. However, while the title is still available on the Xbox 360 platform, many are still considering it partially exclusive due to the difference in quality between the two versions. Sony agrees.

According to GamesThirst, during a Square Enix conference with employees from several different companies, a Microsoft employee took the stage and gave thanks to Square Enix for releasing an Xbox 360 version of their latest title. The following ensued:

“…as mentioned earlier a Microsoft spokesperson took the stage hailing the publishing giant for bringing over the respected franchise to 360, followed by a Sony spokesperson who said that Final Fantasy is a PlayStation Franchise and that the latest installment is the “best on PS3″ – on a single Blu-ray disc – the way it was meant to be played.”

While it can be argued that the Final Fantasy series is equally as much of a Nintendo franchise, there’s no doubt that the PlayStation 3 version has several benefits. While what he said was out of line, the context of the situation wasn’t noted, so perhaps the statements by the Microsoft employee were more flamboyant.

Either way, Final Fantasy XIII has released today for the PlayStation 3 platform after five long years of development. Be sure to check it out whether or not you like RPGs.

    This game should be a system seller for sony, but they are not making a bundle or anything like that, same thing with god of war, imagine a bundle with god of war 3 and FF13, how many systems do you think that would sell?

  2. meh FFXIII is crap in my opioion, i bought it this morning and 6 hours later i took it back to shop to get my refund, i huge fan of FF series and this biggest letdown ever, i glad it went multiplatform, so 360 fanboy can have this shit game too while PS3 owner getting God of war 3 which is deserve for PS3 exslusive

    ^ been saying that since jan

    Waaaaaahhh, Final Fantasy XIII isn’t an exclusive, I HATE IT!!! WAAAAAAAHHH!!!

    Seriously, exclusivity for exclusivity’s sake is dumb, let the 360 guys have this one, PS3 got the better version, anyway.

    @megs1120
    Exclusives are generally the only reason for somebody that owns one of the other current gen consoles to purchase another current gen console. Exclusives is the ONLY reason I bought an Xbox 360. I do NOT purchase multi platform games for my 360 unless it is the Orange Box. Many 360 owners are looking for a reason to purchase a PS3 and the more exclusives we loose the less reason there will be to buy one. I believe we have enough exclusives anyways but believe it or not there would of been plenty of people that would have bought a PS3 just for FFXIII.

  6. I think the best part of calling something crap is when it’s not explained as to why.

    Regardless, I don’t think it’s THAT out of the line
    Microsoft does this on a daily basis, hell one of their devs made fun of the Wii and claimed their game was the best looking game ever, and Microsoft in general claims everything is the best so a Sony rep says something that is true and it’s out of the line? XD
    I just thought it was funny was all, FF may not exactly be a PlayStation franchise excusively but it is a PS franchise nonetheless, and it was the better version of the two.

    Honestly, a company saying outlandish things isn’t great for the company but this was at the least humorous with truth tied in to it if you ask me.

  7. what store gives you a refund for a game you opend and played? that must be a joke of a store serious stores woudln’t refund your money because “you didn’t like it”.

  8. both or not…FF13 is so far “meh” in my eyes…i’m about 5 hours in…to linear!

  9. Robotron says:

    Costco will give you a full refund for opened software.
    Also I’m not buying this one. I’ve played enough FF games to last me a lifetime and it just seems they are always regurgitating the same crap. I don’t want to spend half my play time going down a linear path being spoon feed fancy videos. We also know it will get amazing scores but that means nothing. Game sites are giving the 360 and the PS3 versions the same score…these reviews never tell it like is anymore anyway.
    I know people with handles like “cloud” or FF avatars won’t understand, but I’m just not interested in the FF series anymore. It’s like Activision using a name to churn out the same thing again and again.

  10. ZebraheadK says:

    Yeah I’m about 8 hours into the game and its nothing special, yes the graphics are nice but nothing better than we’ve seen in previous exclusives. The first three hours were straight up terrible and it’s gotten better but compared to other RPG’s of this generation it fails. After 8 hours i just unlocked the ability to level my weapons and still no side quest in site nor will there be till about 25 hours deep, not to mention the pure linear game play. Give me Fallout or Mass Effect over this game any day, hell I’d probably even take Fable. If this game didn’t say Final Fantasy it would just be another run of the mill JRPG.

    @Crueltea
    indeed lol

  12. Meghterb says:

    Meh MS is better than Sony, they got both media and money. I hate Sony when they make fanboy announcements. Yes the PS3 version is better (in terms of graphics) but MS got all the media, take this website for example, the FF XIII ad only shows the 360 version of the game.

  13. @Robotron
    to each there own i can respect that , this game isn’t ment for every one , some people will love it and some won’t which is fine , and also which is why gaming is so great , there are games for every differnt gamer out there. i love the game so far but thats just me.

  14. Meghterb

    this is a sony site? if you don’t like sony why are you here? i own both 360 and ps3 , but i come here talk about ps3 and read up on ps3. but ps3 or 360 , the winner in this is square. they’ll be making more money off of this than sony or ms.

  15. Max Murray says:

    Sad to hear all the hate pointed at 13. It came out on my birthday, was thinkin’ about picking it up this weekend, but I’m still on the fence because of how severe of a let down 12 was….

    now with everyone chiming in…. i might hold my breath.

  16. Meghterb says:

    @ abercrombieco2

    I’m a PS3 owner. And yeah Square is the winner in terms of making money, but as you can see, they’re losing their fans.

  17. Jeneric says:

    i find it ridiculous all of you bought this game and are complaining about it… especially cause every complaint that you have is exactly what theyve been saying this game is about… more linear and doesnt give you a huge world until youre very deep into it. and how can you give a full review when youre 6 hours into a game thats single story mode alone without side missions is 30+ hours of gameplay. seriously why dont you guys read some reviews instead of wasting $60. I am actually really enjoying it. it is exactly what i thought it was going to be.

  19. JackC8 says:

    A microsoft employee thanked SE for accepting their cash bribe? Yeah, that was very big of them.

  20. @Robotron – actually my avatar usually is Cloud. And I understand. Which is why I haven’t bought this one, and won’t until I at least borrow it from someone.

    @Meghterb – media and money don’t make you better – unless you’re talking about being better at being greedy. Producing a quality product makes you better. Who has the higher quality product? Survey says: Sony! Bam! FACE PALM! now I’ve had my say, go to http://www.xboxlifestyle.com

  21. @Meghterb

    i don’t understand why some people bought it and didn’t like it, and why is it being linerar a bad thing? not every game needs to be a open world sandbox game. people just rush out and buy games with out even really looking up much about them first , with out even really knowing if they like it or not.

  22. @abercrombie – Traditionally most RPG’s and most FF games have optional side quests at almost any given time, save during maybe the first hour of gameplay. This is usually part of the experience – if you want to play in a linear fashion that option is there, but if you want to do sidequests, level up your characters, find items and weapons that you otherwise wouldn’t acquire, that option is there. In almost every RPG I’ve ever played half the fun is in exploring the world around you, since it is full of side stories that enrich the context of the world you are playing in, and the emotional ties to that and the people that your characters actions effect. Without that, the game loses depth, which is what makes RPGs great for those who love to play RPGs. Also, I hate that term “sand box” – it makes me think of GTA, and thats certainly not what we want here either. A bunch of pointless mini games won’t solve the issue, but rather side missions with optional short stories, and actual rewards for completing them. The last linear RPG I played was FF11 I think, and I hated it for exactly that, although even that managed to have some side missions in it. ::::sigh:::: maybe if you had played FFVII in its prime, you might understand.

  23. shadowjin says:

    lol

    ive gotten nothing but positive feed back.. some of you on this site are dumb fanboys.. listening to what they heard and most the time its a friend of a friend..as for the guy saying that FF offers the same old thing every-time.. thats funny because every story is different, different summons, interactions, always something new even the combat system.. some of you would prefer it exclusive than dealing with the fact its multi-platform makes it shitty. If you guys read everything outside of what your friends say, you would see it opens up after your done with them chasing you. Yeah, the games so shitty you returned it in 6 hours lmao .. its like how the people cheering for FF13 than switched to FFvs because its exclusive, yet , theres no information on it.

    @abercrombieco2

    not everyone bought it.. im pretty sure some are just making statements for the hell of it. Also theres nothing bad with a little linearity, tons of games use it and there are different paths before it opens up.

    @Jeneric

    most making statements if you read the comments haven’t bought it. The game is awesome, i agree with you…like MAxmurry saying everyones chiming in.. chiming in saying what? that they heard from a friend or that they returned it after 6 hours..

    Sorry PSLS universe but this game for me isn’t the bee’s knees. I’m sorry but playing games where dudes don’t always protray themselves as such or they could be this or that but it’s not important the story is. Give me a break, I’m one of those dudes that grew up on Bad Dudes and Double Dragon. SO for this year God Of War 3 will probably be my choice for game of the year so far unless something else happens before Jan 1, 2011. FFXIII won’t even be on my radar and if it sales a ton and all the great stuff whatever. I ain’t touching it.
