‘Move’ Over Arc, Sony Trademarks New Name

03/10/2010 Written by Anthony Severino

For weeks now the media has been referring to the PS3 motion controller by its rumored name, Arc. Originally dubbed internally as Gem, Sony’s motion controller is going to be a main focal point at Sony’s GDC press conference tonight. It’s expected that an official name will be revealed tonight as well. According to a new trademark filed by Sony, it looks like another name could be sending ‘Arc’ on the ‘Move’.

Just yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment filed a trademark for the name ‘Move’. The trademark covers “game controllers for consumer video game consoles”. That would definitely cover the PS3 motion controller, and ensure there is no legal battling over the name Arc, which is the name for a line of Microsoft computer mice.

Along with the trademark, a logo has been uncovered. (pictured right)

So does this new name ‘move’ you? Let us know below…

  6. Josh Fernandes Says:

    maybe its a trademark for Sony’s version of the Wii balance board (O.o)

    I really don’t care what it’s called as long as it plays as good as they showed in E3 last year.

    I haven’t even played the Wii yet. But one time I went to Best Buy and they had a Wii on display. I tried playing it, but the game was only multiplayer and they only had one controller, so I couldn’t get passed the character selection menu. Why the hell would they put an unplayable game on display and how the hell do they expect me to get a Wii if they put on something like that. Then again its probably me who couldn’t figure out how to make it one player.

    The logo looks like it would be named Arc

    You know, you dorks piss me off sometimes. You ever think the problem might be YOU? YOU CAN’T NAME EVERYTHING “GOD KILLING STICK”, “BABE-LAY POLE”, OR “THE BLOOD-LETTER”. As soon as I read the headline, I knew thread would be dominated with not just general hate, but “That’s worse than Arc” comments. Here’s some psychology for you:

    You think the thing will fail (or even if you don’t, YOU are not interested) so everything about Move/Arc is deemed stupid. Don’t believe me (of course you don’t, because you’re crazy)? The reason you don’t hear people talking about “Natal” being a stupid name is because you’ve already bought into the idea that it’s better than what Sony has, so you are afraid to hate on it because someone could always say “It’s better than Arc”. Well let me tell you, Natal WILL fail, because developers are cutting costs and they don’t want to deal with it.

    Analysts are jumping on the Sony bandwagon and Developers are listening. Don’t believe me (of course you don’t, because you’re crazy)? Tiger Woods gets “Arc’d”, but not Natal’d. So all you insecure Sony fans out there, be proud. Sony has made a good “Move”.

    @Odium_Generis

    nice pun at the end. While you are coming on a little strong, I must say I do agree with you. I’m supporting this 100%. First day buy for me!

    I love that they waited until the day before unveiling it to trademark the name. They knew from last year that it would be a wasted effort.
