God of War III will set the bar for graphics as high as Mount Olympus when it releases in just a few days. But how much of the PlayStation 3′s power did the Sony exclusive actually use to achieve such a high level of jaw-dropping visuals? God of War III’s game director, Stig Amussen, reveals just how much the team at Sony Santa Monica Studios squeezed out of Sony’s behemoth black machine.
During an interview conducted by UGDB, Stig Amussen remarked that he isn’t sure if Sony Santa Monica Studios were close to using even 50% of the PlayStation 3′s power. When asked if the team could go further with the PlayStation 3 with future games, Amussen replied:
Absolutely, we can do much more with it. I don’t know if we are even close to 50% of PlayStation 3’s power at this point.
Yes, God of War III doesn’t even use half of the PS3′s power, and is already being hailed as one of the best games ever released in terms of visuals, even topping Uncharted 2.
God of War III will unleash chaos on March 16th for North America, and 19th March for Europe. Check out why PlayStation LifeStyle believes that God of War III is truly a shining example of “Only on PlayStation.”
whoa that crazy. GoW3 does indeed have the best visuals so far. When time comes where a game uses 100% power of the ps3, l think my head will explode from amazement
That is really awesome they have only used 50% of the power.
Something I do not like is questions pertaining to how much of a systems power has been used, I would much prefer a question such as ” Do you feel you used 100% of the potential for this system to the best of you(r) team’s knowledge. “
PS3: It’s Only OVER 9,000!!!
50% of the power? What? What does that even mean?
I keep hearing this, Is this the new Blast Processing?
didn’t naughty dog say they had maxed out the system ?
Wow thats just crazy. Imagine what they will do in the future if they use 80 to 100%. Anyways, only a few more days for the release of the game which I bought a ps3 for.
Not to put the guy down or anything but this is such an arbitrary statement. Is there even a way of knowing what 100% power of the PS3 is? Also, 100% what anyway? Graphical rendering? Efficiency? What?
Like someone already mentioned, ND said something about having “maxed out” the PS3′s potential. Both of these statements come from singular individuals who have absolutely no way of knowing what the max power of the PS3 even is. The two contradicting statements proves that point, as one developer thinks he maxed it out, while the other developer that makes a graphically superior game says he only tapped into 50% of it…
Marketing hype statements.
You know the title is really not going with the quote. Most people in the comments believes it does 50% but it actually uses less. This happened also when ND said they use alot of the ps3 power but article titles say full ps3 power. Ehh w/e
naughty dog did say that…good memory kid.
Naughty Dog said they used about 80% of the PS3′s power. But I feel like the level that used most of that power was the train level. Cuz that level had all kinds of madness going on.
Really? In this case, I don’t think we’ve seen PS3′s most epic game yet.
I agree. I think it will be years until we see games “capped” at a certain capacity. Gran Turismo 5 this year will certainly turn some heads. In my opinion GT5P is a better looking game than Uncharted 2. GT5 will certainly set a benchmark for future games, for a long, long time, imho.
Theres different “tricks” that developers come up with to optimize processes.. seems like Santa Monica has a whole truck full of tricks!
there are always going to be new ways of using processing power, etc. that will increase the capabilities of the hardware. When Naughty Dog said they maxed out the PS3, they did, for what was possible at the time they were developing Uncharted 2. Now there are new possibilities due to new methods. What the guys working on God of War consider 50% now, may be only 25% by the end of the PS3′s life cycle. I feel like it will be possible for the PS3 to have a much longer life cycle than what was originally expected just because no one knew at the beginning just what the cell processor was capable of…The PS3 might be able to keep improving and compete well with whatever the next Microsoft system is…
Crysis 2 will max out the PS3′s potential
hello …
i really want to see that game that will max out the PS3…
humm, would need SONY’s hand for so, still i’m happy with the actual games, so expecting to be blown away in the future.
cheers!
I wonder if Sony are working on a performance analyser for the PS3 as they did with the 2 consoles beforehand? That would be the best way to judge how much more can be squeezed out of PS3.
Dang, imagine what other games will look like in a couple of years
50% or 100% the game is impressive either way. I haven’t played UC2 yet (I plan to after GOw3) but I’ve seen screenshots and I though that was the best I had seen. It seems that every exclusive to the PS3 looks better than the last, MGS4, UC2, and now GOW. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

When Naughty Dog stated they used 100% of the power, they admitted it had not been done in the most efficient way… which is why it used so much processing power. Given time, they said they could make it more efficient, and thus get more out of it.
Crysis 2 will not max out the PS3, they have the potential but they won’t. It’s a multiplatform game, and the PS3 version will NOT be that much more superior than the Xbox version if Microsoft has any say about it, and believe me, they WILL have a say about it. But you better believe the developers of Crysis 2 will tout that it did max it out. Only to start a flame war once the 360 owners of the game will see it’s not so much different than their version.
So then they will use it on future arguements such as “That’s why the PS3′s power isn’t that great when compared to the 360 because the Crysis developers said that it maxed out the PS3 to make the game, and it’s not that much better than the 360″.
Yup I can see it now. I might as well start copying this comment and save it for when those “Crysis Maxes out PS3″ articles start surfacing.
