Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime “Flattered” by PlayStation Move

03/14/2010 Written by Dan Massi

Have you ever heard of the saying “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”? Nintendo took us all by surprise when they introduced the Wii, shattering sales records and ultimately being one of the most difficult consoles to find. Taking after the Wii’s success, both Sony and Microsoft revealed their own motion sensory devices. At GDC, Sony showcased their final motion controller product: PlayStation Move. Being the “innovators in the space”, Nintendo has commented on Move, and they seemed flattered.

Speaking with IGN, Nintendo of America’s president Reggie Fils-Aime discussed the PlayStation Move. Overall, he said the motion controller was flattering.

“If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery then I’m blushing I’m so flattered. You know, I didn’t see the announcement. I did spend some time at the booth and saw some of what they were demonstrating and I think the question isn’t how will we react — I think the question is, so what is it that’s going to be compelling to the consumer in what they’re doing?”

PlayStation Move releases this fall. Warner Bros. announced the first Wii port of the motion controller, Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest.

Deep down Reggis is pissed and shaking in his boots.. He knows damn well this move is gonna boost the PS3 sales up a lot! i mean a true HD console in the ps3 with motion control and not to mention 3d gaming coming soon nintento better be worried microsoft too.

Since I lack fanboyism, I can easily say that Playstation Move is a rip-off of the Wiimote. Sony knows Nintendo made something very innovative. Even X-Box is getting into this wireless motion controller business.

  3. Microshock says:

I’m not going to ignore the fact that the Move is derivative of the Wii BUT it improves on it drastically. It’s the Wii HD with Sony games.

    Amazing.

It is tiring to read how the PS3 and 360 is “ripping off” Nintendo and its Wiimote, etc, etc.

There is no such thing as innovation anymore, everything is derivative of other peoples ideas and past inventions. Sony has motion control in DS3. Is it wrong to take this further into full motion control? Who cares if the layout of the Move looks like the Wiimote. If a company does something correctly, do you automatically forfeit the right to do it correctly too?

All this exclusive claim of intellectual property and self-innovation only stifles growth. It is the same as having a monopoly and no competition. Should Sony create an inferior product with an inferior layout just so people can say “Hey it is so original and looks nothing like the Wiimote!”

Get over it, the Move is a ten fold improvement on any of the Wiimote/derivatives, and this is only a good thing for us consumers. This will only fuel others to make a better motion controller in the future.

If the Move is a ripoff of the Wiimote, than the Wii HD is just another ripoff of the PS3 and 360.

If you don’t like it, don’t buy it, don’t support it. Simple as that.

    NEWS FLASH!!!!!

Sony and Nintendo have been at WAR since the original PlayStation. Google it!

And Sony had motion control before the Wii with the PS2 EyeToy and games designed for it. They might not have made a big splash since if you can find them you can get a game and camera for $9.99 at GameStop. I purchased PS2 EyeToy with Kinetic which is a personal trainer software to help with personal fitness (Wii Fit???), I also purchased the camera with a game called AntiGrav a motion controlled snow/hoverboard. And project Natal is being billed as the latest in motion control. Well in your google search you might find some videos on motion control games on the PS2 that have come and gone.

    NOTHING NEW HERE MOVE ON!!!

  6. SPD55 says:

Here’s a link on you tube to prove that Natal is late to the game…

If Playstation Move was copying the Wii then there would be lawsuits and that’s it. Yes, the additions to the both PS3 and 360 were influenced by the Wii. Because all this system are copying Atari with creating home consoles. All aspects of the evolution in the game biz are influenced by the systems that have come before them.

    TheHater nailed it.
Sony has been working on this for almost 10 years. The old videos with the eye and the wand say that this is not a new or a “ripped off” idea. We thought Nintendo was going to bring a revolution…instead all we got was a Wii.

  10. skizmattik says:

The games they showed were the rip-offs not the Playstation Move itself. The technology has great potential but those games were straight Wii Sports rip-offs. I’d rather see more tech demo games similar to what they showed last E3.

  11. I think Reggie asks an important question that I’ve been wondering myself for a while… what about this is going to be compelling to consumers? Is that enough to have them spend money on the eye, controllers, and games, or will it appear to them that they might as well just get a wii? Is it good enough to me to drop ~$100, as a ps3 owner? Is it enough to sell systems (nope)? I know I can see the difference, and every other nerd out there can, but how is sony going to differentiate from the wii to the average consumer? How can they make this appear better, besides graphically?

It’s not fanboyism you lack; it’s the facts.

For instance, the fact that Sony was doing motion control on the PS2 with the eyetoy before the Wii was ever even rumored to exist? Or how about the fact that the eyetoy which was released in 2003 [three years before the Wii] included a disc with this video on it:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbSzmRt7HhQ

Or perhaps that this one-handed controller [that looks strikingly like the Wii nunchuk] was also released for the PS2 three years before the Wii:

Get a clue; don’t jump on the Move/Sony hate bandwagon.

  13. Timewarp says:

    @NukeA6

The Playstation Move has to copy the Wiimote at there’s no real other way of tackerling motion gaming. As they said you need a physical controller for this to work and without a nunchuke like controller it won’t work either.

I’ve been looking forward to Sony’s version of the Wiimote for a while. I’ve known they’d do this for years. Why? Because companies exsist to make money and there was no way Sony would pass up motion gaming knowing how much the Wii made.

except Sony’s version of Wii Fit very soon. This is just a giant piggy bank to smash open but don’t think all you Wii owners can take the moral high ground because Nintendo only went into this type of gaming for the same reason. A console for everyone? Save me the lies and give me the real reason: The Money.

Also before I thought Reggie was ok but now he just seems like an douche I just want to kick him in the private area till he can’t reproduce.

Still a shame though that the Wii only had the motion gaming going for it and now Sony’s found a way to do the same thing only tons better.

The Hater has proven me wrong. And I’ve never heard of Wii HD.

I think what made your comment really hillarious is that you started it off by saying since you lack “fanboyism”. But all you really ended up saying is that since you “lack fanboyism” you lack the ability to see when something is improved upon instead of “rip-off” and when something has been done before in the past (SONY’s PS2 Eyetoy), before another company came in and made it mainstream (Wii). Maybe you need to get some “fanboyism” in you, then it would give you the urge to get more information on the subject you “lack fanboyism” off.
