FFXIII Director “Wants” to Remake Final Fantasy VII

03/21/2010 Written by Dan Massi

When a technical demo of Final Fantasy VII was shown for PlayStation 3 back at E3 2005, fans freaked. A remake of the cult classic running on PS3 is something series fans have been begging for ever since.

We recently ran an article reporting that a Final Fantasy VII remake would be possible if the development was only one year. Now, more talks on the remake are springing up, which is cause for much excitement.

Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama has revealed his pick for what Final Fantasy title he would like to remake. “That would be Final Fantasy VII!”, Toriyama said, and we can’t blame him.

“If we had the manpower and the time to work on a project, if we were to remake Final Fantasy VII with the quality of Final Fantasy XIII it would become a tremendous project. If we can get the number of people we need by all means that would be the one I would really want to remake.”

    I was a Phantasy Star guy back in the day, but I haven’t played an RPG in probably 10 years. Someday I’ll get around to renting FFXIII but I’m not in a rush.

  2. Beakerz says:

    The original had a love to it, a spark of magnificence.

    I’m one that absolutely relishes the thought of a remake, but im worried they’ll stuff it up…

  3. NukeA6 says:

    FF7 should have a remake. The original translation is terrible and it has enough fanbase to support the idea. But that would mean that I’ve wasted $10 on the PSN. Not that it matters with me.

  4. wtGp says:

    hurry up & remake this NAO!!!!!!

  5. FF7 has a bigger fanbase 13 years after the original than a lot of video games released in the last 12 months.

    I am all for a remake for the original FF7, but I fear that they will somehow try to put it on the 360 as well. If they remake it, it needs to be a PS3 exclusive. I’m not saying this for “fanboy” reasoning. I’m saying this because FF7 is a true PS classic. It was one of the games that launched the PS1 during its generation. If any game deserves to stay an exclusive, it’s FF7. If not, don’t even bother.

  6. Booger says:

    @nuclearwarfare i´m with you bro!
    i´m sure most of that fan base will boycott the game if this ever comes to the 360!

    I hate these articles(no offense) reason being is because they approach the situation as if it may happen an TBH it insults my intelligence…why? because ff7 was one of the highest grossing and acclaimed games to date and it would take a retard to debate me and say they won’t re-make ff7 to capitalize on the massive amount of money they would make off of such a game…..the ff7 remake IS already a reality ppl, it’s already in development and may even be complete as I type…..it’s not a “maybe” but a reality in the not so distant future………..but keep in mind ffv13 will be da next hoorah 4 enix so
    i’d count on ff7RE as a late gen title to cement the ps3′s name, don’t believe me?….wait, give it 6 years(from this date) and if u don’t have the platinum trophy for ff7 remake please feel free to beat me with a stick….

  8. ENiGMATiC_HiTMAN says:

    @Booger

    That won’t happen bro, cloud strife is as synonymous with playstation as master chief is with xbox…cloud won’t be hoovering over a xbox console ever……

  9. Max Murray says:

    7 is classic. If you haven’t played it because of your petty personal reasons, you’re subject to my judgingly slow disapproval.

    @ ENiGMATiC_HiTMAN

    You cannot say that these articles insult your intelligence, when we have absolutely no idea that a Final Fantasy VII remake is in development. At the moment, we can only approach the situation with the assumption that this may happen. Like I said, we have no idea it will happen.

  11. a tremendous project? it would also be a tremendous sell. think about how many people bought 7 as a PS1 classic. Those people would be in line waiting for a rebuild of the game. I for one would be with them.
    as for ff7RE already having been made, having the platinum by 2015 (which would mean it was made for PS3 and out in time for PS4), and a fan made boycott if 7 wound up on Xbox … can we just beat ENiGMATiC_HiTMAN and Booger with that stick now? Neither of them seem to know what they are talking about.
    If a boycott was going to take place for SE going muilti-platform, it would have happened already. 7 is a classic, but no true fan will pass it up esp if it winds up looking as good as 13. get over yourself.

  12. Max Murray says:

    AAAAAAAAAAAMEN dark angel!

  13. dmdragon says:

    What they should do is set up a preorder system at places, and if it gets say 4 million preorders or however good they want it to do they will do it. other games have done that with great sucess. I almost guarantee 2 million of those preorders would hit the first 2 hours of the announcement.

  14. @Enigmatic – I think you just insulted your own intelligence, by jumping to conclusions and making assumptions with zero evidence of what you claim. A word to the wise: don’t talk about something if you don’t know anything about it.

    I said it before – I don’t think we NEED a remake (it would be nice), but if they do I worry that they’ll screw it up, since it won’t just be graphics and voice acting that they change. However, you won’t see me not buying it if they make it (double negatives anyone?). I feel like we’ll still be talking about this “possibility” for years to come. Oh, and agreed that it should be exclusive, but solely for the better graphics – if they’re gonna do it, do it right.

  15. Xael says:

    Has a proposed boycott for any game been succesful?
