ModNation Racers is set for May 25th, and the upcoming PlayStation 3 kart-racer has gamer’s adrenaline pumping. The game is shaping up to be quite interesting title, perfectly fitting under the Play.Create.Share. genre that LittBigPlanet ushered in. I just wished that when I had the beta that I could have actually raced against others online, for some reason it kept kicking and didn’t give me that chance to experience it. The online portion anyways.

I was really miffed I missed out on the beta, but am extremely pleased they’ve been listening about the 4 player local split screen.

A post release DLC option to allow distributed rendering of the 4player split across 2xPs3s, linked over the system’s gigabit Ethernet to output to a single display/amplifier at 60fps(or more on screen geometry would excellent); obviously four friends playing serious 4player will own more than one ps3 between them :) and won’t mind a more involved set up.

The video obviously didn’t showcase the 4player split graphics, but I was slighting concerned about some geometry/texture transitions of huts after the jump around 4:40 in the 2 player split.

My other many concern is the tricks, as I personally hate tricks and bikes in all the recent karting games like Mario Kart Wii and Sonic & Sega All stars racing; the shield/boost meter sounds like a good idea, although I hope there is still going to be a skill element for defence, like in Mario Kart Double Dash or Mario Kart DS, with a slight pause before the strike (of a red/blue shell) to allow for controlled drift dodging.

Drafting is also a great addition from bomberman kart, which really balances the catchup need, versus vulnerability to dropped or reverse thrown objects.

With the ability to build your own inspired tracks also, the big problem with this game might be trying to get it out of my ps3, once it has gone in, if it is as good as I hope it is.

    is there a cockpit view?

It is a karting game not a Toca racing sim.

Why would anyone want to ruin a good localplayer fantasy karting experience with simulator cameras?

The handling of any good karting game should have handling for external cam, and not be enhanced with a bonnet-cam.

From what I experienced from the beta and what I have seen/read about this game it seems the developer is spreading themselves so thin trying to add things that game play is really suffering.
Instead of focusing on fixing the elements that made the racing bland they want to focus on adding more “cool” things and setting this game up the be the DLC whore that LBP has become.

I was once excited for this game, but I will not be buying it unless game play improves.

@Robotron – why do you think they’re spreading themselves thin? They seem to be adding everything that a good kart racer needs in my books! The game play of the beta was excellent baring the load times, kart control only took one race to get used to…

I presume when you call LBP a DLC whore you mean “DownLoadable Costumes” ;-)

I get more excited for this game the more I see of it, just waiting to find out which preorder extras come from which store in the UK and I’ll be making my purchase :-) )
