Bowling Reveals More MW2 DLC, Price Gouging Explained

03/27/2010 Written by Dan Massi

The first map pack for Modern Warfare 2, “Stimulus Package”, hasn’t even been released yet, and there are talks of continuing DLC for the title. And why not? Modern Warfare 2 was an immense success, and the DLC for it will certainly follow in its virtual footsteps.

Infinity Ward’s community manager Robert Bowling, recently spoke with NowGamer on upcoming DLC for Modern Warfare 2, plus the price of the first map pack. The latter has been under fire for it’s price, which is a hefty $15 price tag(with five maps, that’s $3 a map). Bowling defended the price of the map pack, saying it was “worthwhile.”

“I have no doubt that anyone who downloads this map pack is going to get their money’s worth. They’re going to feel their investment is worthwhile. Because if you’re playing Modern Warfare 2 like myself or many other people do every night, that’s actually going to give you a bunch of new mileage and a bunch of extra gameplay – to really explore and discover them and to really, you know, come up with new tactics and experience them in a whole new way. Regardless of what the price is you’re going to feel your money’s well-spent.”

Also during the talk, Bowling also confirmed that at least one more DLC pack is being planned for Modern Warfare 2. In the original Modern Warfare, the spectacular title only received one pack, so it’s a nice change to see more commitment in the DLC area.

“We’re definitely going to do at least one more DLC pack, but the direction of it and specifically what we’re going to do hasn’t been determined yet.”

The Modern Warfare 2 “Stimulus Package” DLC hits PSN on April 30th.

  1. Its funny because at this point many of the addicted fans of MW2 are slowly beginning to realize how bad of a game this really is and are getting bored of it.

Even though this DLC will probably still do very good but MW2 is dying out slowly.

  2. What I find funny is that MW2 has sold millions of copies yet, which is much better than many games do yet they cant help but charge even more than most for dlc. Ironic. Figure they would treat the community a bit better.

    Morning everyone.

Personally $15 is a lot of money to charge for map packs. I just can’t see myself spending that much for just maps. Then again I’m not a fan of MW2 so that’s probably the reason why. Honestly I’ve never really thought the games were anything but over hyped shooters. All this is my opinion of course. Still it’s beginning to happen. Haven’t you noticed that they are releasing the game one month and then the very next month they are releasing DLC.

I mean how is this even remotely possible unless developers already have the DLC finished or near finished. Which begs the question, why not just add it in there to begin with. I hate buying DLC for this very reason. A prime example of good DLC is Dante’s Inferno where you can buy souls(correct me if im wrong). To me that’s an excellent example as it doesn’t really effect the game so it can be released fairly early. But things like new maps, levels, suits, etc that get released just 1-2 months after is starting to get ridiculous.

Also I’m not saying that this is what MW2 has done as the game has been out for quite some time. Just using it as an example of over charging and further as a stepping stone to detail the release of things that could have just been in various games at the beginning.

His explaination still doesn’t convince me to blow $15 on this junk. Bad Company 2 is where I spend all my FPS time and I’m loving it. MW2 was overhyped and wasn’t worth the $60. I don’t plan on buying any map packs until they are bundled with a lower price. Screw Activision.

  5. I’m with you 100% sprice25, I can’t put down my Bad Company 2…everything in that game is just so much more satisfying..it’s so good!

  6. “Regardless of what the price is you’re going to feel your money’s well-spent.”

    Really?

  7. H8 says:

    @ sprice25

Very true i got sick of MW2 cod4 is better than MW2 imo but BC2 blows both of them away! I owned MW2 for about a month then finally got sick of it and sold it on ebay.. It is nothing but an arcade shooter with a buch of trash talking little punk kids.

BC2 is where the true players are.

  8. No DLC is worth $15, especially not DLC for a game plagued with as many issues as MW2.

  9. diesel1984 says:

Hahaaaa, Robert Bowling is trés funny, I must say, because he really didn’t explain why the DLC is so expensive. He just said you’re gonna get your money’s worth if you play it a lot. Mr. Bowling is a real whiz with words, isn’t he?

All I’d like to know now is why that map pack is that expensive. Like someone before me said, they’ve already brought in the big bucks for Activision, why not cut the gamers some slack? Unless… ooooh, snap, we’ve just received the title of “Activision’s Cash Cows”! :) )

  10. Would they do a game more justice to just release a new “Mission Packs” & “maps” for a titles once they get to be as well received as MW2? In stead of a entirely whole new game (sequel) and chance ruining the reputation, put more effort in to fixing the bugs that never seem to get worked out. really give your character a “military career” over mutltiple battle scenarios. (look at the folllowing of WOW) to be able to have one game like COD:MW2 and expansion packs released in stead of juat a new game would be very cool

  11. He says:

“Regardless of what the price is you’re going to feel your money’s well-spent.”

Um no, no I won’t. There are to many reasons to list on why this is stupid. I liked MW and I liked MW2 but I traded it off due to glitches, and stupid crap like this. They made more off MW2 then most game developers would ever dream of and this is how they repay the consumer to put them in that position? Here’s a thought go “f” yourself.

    Thanks.

The Second Video Game crash is imminent folks. The introduction of DLC is what got the gears going. Now Activision and MW2 will go down in video game history as what sparked the beginning of the Second Video Game crash. You know this DLC will sell like hotcakes. There’s nothing stopping Activision anymore. They will charge even more money for their DLC and inspire other companies to do the same. AND PEOPLE WILL BUY! Until it gets to the point where everyone will just stop buying games as much as they use too, and profits will plumet! $20 DLC anyone? Well you better start saving for it now, they will start to surface soon.

    3dlls a map… omg x) Uncharted 2 map pack is made of 2 and it’s 1.50 each… and they are SUPERB!

  14. soldiercell says:

This game is not dying out for me, love it, gonna get the dlc fo sho

  15. Thats fine soldiercell but don’t do it at the price its at now. By doing so you support the obvious hike in price that Activision is pushing and it will cost us all in the end. Wait till its on sale or something. If people buy something at this price they will make it the standard.

  16. xraver21 says:

no offense to anyone that posts here, but why complain about a few bucks? im a college student that works as a painter to support myself, but i can find 15 bucks for the maps. i wish original chicken sandwhich meals at Burger King were $1, but ill still pay 6 bucks for one. MW2 is a good game. and for me it has what i want most, which is a ton of players to play against. It is a decent game with a huge following, ensuring that i have minimal wait time between games. i probaby spend more time cursing at the gameplay than most others, but at least im playing and this map pack will let me keep playing against others in online play for at least a few more months.

  17. sorry but I think the entire game is dlc. alittle bit upgraded graphics, 5 hours of gameplay, and if u haven’t noticed watching gamepley from MW2 looks like MW. $60 for new maps is what u actually paid for. everyone already handed money over to this money scam

  18. draegen says:

Yeah, One favor though. When you leave MW2 to play a good game like BFBC2 of MAG could you please leave your turbo controller shit to MW2. We don’t like pistols and sniper rifles that sound/act like assault rifles in our games. Nor do we think you have any skill if you have to use cheats to win.

  21. Rehashes. Overcharging. Glitches. A complete utter lack of creativity or innovation. And yet it sells. I simply don’t understand! WTF mate?!

  22. ArenHam says:

I hate when they use stupid speeches/antics to try to promote their products. 15bucks for a god damn map pack is still an insane price no matter what they say.
