PS3 Review – Super Street Fighter IV

04/28/2010 Written by Thomas Williams

The infamous 'Beat the crap out of a random car' Bonus Stage!

Another reason why Super Street Fighter IV is the best fighting game on the PS3 is because of the glorious visuals that Capcom and Dimps have created. Capcom threw fans for a loop when they finally unveiled Street Fighter IV to the world. Gone were the animated 2D characters that Capcom had mastered in years past, replaced with beautifully stylized characters who resemble a cast of UFC fighters more than a group of random ‘Street Fighters’. The best part?? Capcom made it work and thankfully the characters are detailed beyond your imagination. I mean hell, Ryu’s MUSCLES HAVE MUSCLES (Don’t believe me? Just look at Chun-Li’s thighs!!!)!! What’s even crazier is the attention to detail that was put into the game. Hakan loves to splash body oil all over his bulging muscles during the battle. The more oil he applies, the brighter he shines due to the sun…until an eclipse takes place during one stage. The glisten from his body goes from yellow to a dark eclipse blue and it really makes your realize how much time the team put into this game. I love the visuals and hope Capcom will continue to use them for years to come.

Some of you reading this might own both a PS3 and a 360. If you do, do yourself a favor and purchase the PS3 edition. Yes, I know, this is coming from a guy who writes/reviews for a “PlayStation only” site, however hear me out — the PS3′s D-pad is far superior to the sorry excuse of a D-pad the 360 offers. Your thumbs will be thanking me! Also, if you have the extra dough, might I recommend picking up an official arcade pad! I did and the already silky smooth controls and response times were that much better. If you get da’ greens, then pick one up for the ultimate Super Street Fighter IV experience.

When you combine everything that Super Street Fighter IV has to offer, Capcom has crafted a game that you will be challenging your friends and online foes to for quite some time to come. Out of all the fighting games available, the $40 asking price for SSFIV is but a small fee for the premiere fighting game on the PS3. With such a diverse and deep amount of content crammed onto the disc, along with the highly addictive gameplay, this is the fighter that no fighting game fan should be without. Get. It. Now.

PlayStation LifeStyle’s Final Score

100% addictive gameplay with tons of replayability.

A massive amount of content for your money.

The Best Fighter on the PS3 for $40? Steal!

  1. I was hoping Hakan would’ve been a bit better, but maybe when I play the game I will like him. Good review, I might have to pick this up over the weekend.

  2. I know I’m going to get chewed out for this but – its still just a really big DLC packaged as a brand new game. If I owned SFIV, I’d be pissed still. Capcom’s BS about not wanting to ‘split the community’ is just that, BS. It splits it anyways. I’m sure its a great game and all, and that the new features are just as cool as you say – but I still see it as a classic capcom gimmick. All they did is make sure it had enough new stuff to make the hardcore fans go “oh yea, it should have been $15, but I still want it, so I’ll pay another $40″.

  3. I agree with Big Whoop.

    First off, I’m not a fan of SF or fighting games in general. Can’t stand them. Having said that, this is a rip-off to ANYONE that bought the original game. If I were a fan, I wouldn’t buy the original copy and wait for the Super Uber Edition instead of paying $100.

    The fact this game got a 5/5 shows the decline in creditability this site has in my eye, this game is a poor redo… IV was a ok game in my book, but Super doesnt rebalance anything in a noticeable way, atleast in my opinion since the Zan Double/Triple lariat is still powerful enough to beat Hardest with minimal effort.

    as far as the new modes, their not really “new” I mean are we not considering a mode where me + 1+ people vs another group which is just 2 different people… something new? or endless which just saves you the hassle of getting out of a game…

    from a trophy stand point they didnt fix anything… the titles/icons still require you to get just about every other trophy in the process, and most of the tasks are more or less the same…

    as far as blazblue vs Street Fighter, SF will always beat Blaz because SF retains constant, and its far easier to be cheap and combo lock people which many find more enjoyable than fighting people with options… Blaz is far and true a better game on many levels, since its very easy to get into, the learning curve is high but you can beat a high level person if you know a thing or 2, and doesnt have a ton of characters which are overly similar

  5. This game is absolutely fantastic. BlazBlu and others just don’t stand up to the massive amount of precise quality and quantity.

    I was originally considering buying SFIV but then I found out that the Super edition was coming so I decided to just wait for that. Now that this is out, I find out that Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 is just around the corner. Being a huge Marvel nut, I’m probably just going to hold off for that now instead. I’m sure this is a great fighter but I’ve never really been into Street Fighter games on their own. I’m probably still going to give it a rent, though… however, it would be nice if Capcom released a demo for this. What is it with no fighting games getting demos this generation (SFIV, SSFIV, Tekken 6, BlazBlue, MK Vs. DC… etc.)?

  7. This game is just to damn good…A must have for gamers who like fighters,,,

  8. @Victronix

    Come on bro. You’re acting like we’re the ONLY site that gave it a great score. Just go to Metacritic…several major sites did as well. It’s a Damn Good Street Fighter game! It took everything SFIV did right and made it that much better.

    @B1gg_Randall

    Agreed!!

    @Jonathan

    Agreed!!

    Good review – Defo picking this up

    @ stormtrance

    they already said its there last edition there not doing turbo, hyper fighting etc… you also forget that when they did that back in the days it was more arcade driven than home console. The fact that you stated your not a fan of fighting games in general means your opinion is voided.

    Agreed, as annoying it was to read his comment and as silly as it was for him to think that it was valid for him to say this here (On a game that not only got a perfect score in this review, but also on many other sites) since he stated his not a fan an all.

    In the end you have to give him credit for at least mentioning that he wasn’t a fan. Unlike someone else on a previous 2D fighting game article who tried to give in his 2cents without any admitting to knowing nothing about the genre, until way later, after putting up a ridiculous fight…. lol his whole arguement was just a mess at the end.
