SCEA: Exclusive 3D Content in Future

05/06/2010 Written by Kyle P.

Whether you like it or not, 3D gaming is coming. Recently, Sony’s mandatory firmware update, version 3.30, not only included new trophy features, but also prepared the PlayStation 3′s to display 3D images for games. With this update, and Sony’s announcement of an upcoming update to allow for 3D movie playback, it is quite obvious this may not be a “fad” after all. And SCEA certainly does not believe it is, as a recent interview suggests.

Speaking with GamerLive, David Coombes, platform research manager at SCEA, boasted that 3D content would, down the road, receive exclusive content.

“The predictions for the amount of 3D TV’s that are going to be sold are pretty bullish, so we could easily see 3D exclusive content within maybe three years, four years.”

With Sony’s 3D line of Bravia TV’s coming this summer, and more on the way, from rival manufactures, the market will certainly be there. What seems to be the only thing holding the average consumer back, is the expensive price tag that will sure to accompany these new television’s. 1080p TV’s, having just fully penetrated the market, were an expensive commodity for many consumers, and they might not be ready to go out and purchase a new television.

In any case, the coming year will certainly be interesting, as the gaming world is holding its breath right now, seeing where this 3D course will run. What about you, will you purchase a 3D television? Will you wait? Or is this just a fad that will eventually fade away? Post your responses in the comments section below.

  1. maybe in about 3 years i’ll buy one…when they are drastically reduced in price. only the suckers and people with a lot of disposable income are buying one now.

the killer are those glasses! an outrage that they are so expensive.

so I do plan on having one in the future…but first models are usually buggy.

I hope Killzone2 or 3 supports this cause that game is the balls. But then I’d have to drop 5gs for a new tv, and that ain’t happening any time soon so 3Ds out.

    hello …

i’ll go for it, but having already an HDTV, i will go for a PC Monitor with DVI/HDMI in that i’ll use with my new PC & the PS3. cheapest solution until i have room for a new TV & they make a stable version with more features.

    cheers!

most games arnt even in 1080… and youre expecting a big list of 3d titles now? isnt that kinda funny XD

it will be one of those features some people will care about (sorta like data installs) but most people will not… Ive seen movies in the new 3d and i doubt this looks different than that, and that didnt really add anything at all past a gitchy feature

  5. If you’re a guy who won’t be sharing this content with other people, whether you play by yourself all the time, or would like to play by yourself, headplay is an option. Now way I say by yourself I don’t mean single player, I mean not sharing a t.v.

I’ve been wanting a head play since I saw it in a magazine and my first thought was .hack// series. I don’t know how well it will work for 3D, all the reviews i have seen with Head Plays have all been positive from, Wii games, to Heavenly Sword, to World of Warcraft and beyond. They used to be 500 dollars, now they’re 400 dollars. It’s not for everyone, BUT I’m sure someone out there will benefit from it.

The price tag is very small compared to what you’ll be getting if you can afford it and have a situation which makes getting it worth while.

  6. I’d get one, but it’ll be a couple years. I know there are models out right now that don’t require glasses – but they cost about $10000 or more, and I don’t think you can buy them in a regular store. Eventually, as the technology trend has been for the past couple decades – they’ll figure out how to make them better and in larger production, thus reducing the price, thus I will never deal with wearing two pairs of glasses. I already have four-eyes, don’t need six.

i think ill wait till they sort all the bugs out

  8. I got a 3-D hdtv last year and am waiting to get to use its 3-D capabilities .
and it was $50 more than the comparable non 3-D model so people worrying about them being expensive is just because they don’t know how affordable they are and will be in the future .
they have already said that 3-D ps3 games will be playable on any hdtv that supports hdmi 1.4 as well as specific 3-D ones – and that they’ll either make them run at 720p and 60fps or 1080p and 30fps depending on what works best for the game – the 3-D updates for super stardust HD and wipeout HD will drop the resolution to 720p while playing 3-D and go back to 1080p if the regular version is selected to maintain the 60fps – that’s good enough for me .

  9. will be interested once 3d displays don’t require the need for 3d glasses! :D

    hello …

someone said head play, i think this could be cool – a 3D capable head-mounted display ;) … would help for some, but good morning sickness LOL …

i’m still looking for a decent 120Hz plus PC monitor (24″+) … so would be the cheapest alternative until a ‘glass-less 3D TV …

    cheers!
