It was roughly 6 months ago when Sony vaguely announced that they would be bringing 3D compatibility to the PlayStation 3 — sans Blu-ray support — via a firmware update scheduled for sometime this summer. What they forgot to mention was which of the three summer months it would be available. Well, according to a recent interview in the current issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine, we don’t have to wait much longer.
In the interview it was mentioned that the newest PS3 firmware update would be hitting next month (June), more than likely to coincide with E3. The newest update will add 3D gaming capabilities to the PS3 with 3D Blu-ray support hitting at a later date.
Let’s hope that 3D gaming isn’t the only thing we get, as there have even been rumors of an XMB redesign floating around, as well as other added features which would be a nice change of pace.

Stay tuned to PlayStation LifeStyle, as we’ll be sure to let you know once this firmware hits PS3′s around the world next month. Oh, and in case you forgot what 3D gaming looks like, treat yourself to a short demonstration of WipEout HD below.

XMB redesign? hopefully removing the un-needed extra store icons under almost every option. honestly, i for one am sick of seeing it. only need one sony, i know where to find it. oddly enough, when i do purchase from the ps store, i use the original store icon.
now, Sony, how about expanding the video codec options to include .mkv already. more visual options when listening to music would be another plus. but i’m sure it will be the usual non-descript security and other that seems to be in every update. oh, and the 3d gaming update will be squeezed in there somewhere.
oh, what will Sony break with this update? hmmm….
other features will come along with the 3D update as well
it is most likely 3D for PS3 games. I would be surprised if it has anything we been asking for since November of 2006
I am with Versa on the Store Icons. A better Friends list would be nice.
and @ Mumbles… I know Right…
E3 announcement inbound
Personally, I miss the friends list before it had cement blocks over each name and now multi-colored cement blocks. Sleek and refined is what attracts me, and having to look at that big bloated list each time is killing my eyes now.
I’m excited for the 3d coming but I hope Sony has put into thought about how the 3d glasses will be made. I see that they have some in the video for the t.v., but think about it, you might have to where a headset and the glasses at the same time for a game. A pair of glasses with a headset built in would be so awesome and would be cool if the head set was re-attachable so you can you either one whenever. I would like to see the XMB have advertisements of upcoming games and video tips. Sorta like the 360, but without the pointless sponsors and tabs.
Dump the cement block look friends list we have now
it looks so bad compared to the original… & The ps store icon IS only needed in 1 spot that anoys me too….!!!
Whatever they do i just hope they do it right this time!!
Another thing is I WANT A ‘SLEEP TIMER’…. lolol PSP has it & its handy as hellll…….
but, er….the PS3 is ready for 3D gaming since firmware 3.21…what are guys on, huh?

3.21 Info
In addition, this update preps the PS3 system for some upcoming new features, including 3D stereoscopic gaming, which is coming soon to PS3, in time for the launch of Sony’s 3D BRAVIA TVs.
What was that for if it didn’t make it “ready” for it then???

Notice “PREPS”!
I’d personally like the ability to save multiple internet settings instead of re-enter the info every time i switch connections. Something PSP can do that PS3 can’t as of now…it’s just tedious
I think the fact that 3-D was announced as part of 3.21, but apparently it wasn’t, and nobody noticed – pretty much says it all.
I’d like the extra store icons removed too.
I would Like a little thing called “options” ever heard of it?? yes, for like people that don’t like the extra store icons, instead they made it so every ps3 would be almost exactly the same, and thinking that everyone would like it.
@skypeonps3
all 150,000,000+ ps2′s are the same.. no one seems to mind.
@JackC8
I think the fact that
a) they said when it came out that it was only preparing the system for 3d and not full on enabling it, and THAT is apparently what nobody noticed.
b) people have gone over this already in the comments and you still wanted to bitch about it
Pretty much says it all.
Seriously, people are bitching about firmware upgrades? Especially after getting years of them with no issues, 2 things people don’t like and sony is out to ruin our lives with every update? Jesus christ people calm down, they don’t owe you anything after the sale and they’ve improved ps3 performance for free, at some point you have to grow up and realize people aren’t evil for not spoon feeding you whatever you want.
@westsiide
No you don’t understand, they are now able to change it so that means they have to make it perfect for everybody for free. lol
@everyone who mentioned update 3.21,
I was under the same impression, apparently I read the description of the update wrong too. However… Both Avatar and G-Force offer the 3D option, so why would games (that will essentially be old when both the PS3 and Bravia are ready for 3D) already be offering an option we can not use?
Not to mention that both games really suck so I highly doubt they will get people plugging them back in for a replay once they are outfitted with a new $2000+ TV $150+ glasses.
Dont get me wrong, I am all for the 3D gaming and not upset or blaming Sony, that I misunderstood simple wording, but I dont understand why games are fitted for 3D so long before Sony is.
JohnnyTruant5: just wait until it happens to you man!
Johnny….you crack me up….but I must say I agree with everything you said. lol.
hello …
i knew 3.21 was preparing the PS3 for 3D, but i hated the work behind because of otherOS removal. that’s why the 3D feature not entirely present wasn’t that big.
I hope SONY puts more options for the layout & behaviour of the XMB. I want more media support too & the possibility to design & install my own dynaThemes …
but i’d be happier with a global zone, with more services to other parts of the world rather than some feats.
@darkangel269 – there are 3D games out there but they don’t need SONY’s addon to work, in fact they work on all major platform they were designed for & uses the bi-color plastic glasses.
SONY 3D is coming a bit like nVidia’s 3D vision, with a shutter glass, so requires proper software to back it up.
I will MOVE in 3D someday
… will just start by buying a 120Hz+ PC monitor instead of a Rs 110K (3333US$) 3D LED TV … yeah expensive in paradise
cheers!
@mumbles
Wait until what happens to me? I am not about to complain about losing a feature I never used, or a friends list that some people think looks stupid. Am i supposed to wait until I think everyone is out to get me? I need answers man!
Seems like the only reason for posting a story like this is to give whiny ass people a place to run off at the mouth and complain about non issues. because this article isn’t really being to light any great new truth. I mean, I can’t be the only one that expected to hear something new and got nothing but the same bull. Seems extremely pointless to some degree.
I think they should update on the downloading pictures, videos, music bar……you know how you download 10 songs and a bar appears on the screen and it says 1/10 songs to download, it should be 0/10 because it still hasn’t download any songs yet..at the end its 10/10 but the bar shows its still downloading, that is really stupid if the bar finishes downloading it would say 11/10 they should fix that!
I can’t wait till they release cross game voice chat…
Then people can complain about how they keep getting calls in the middle of their single player game and blame sony for trying to ruin their single player experience.
