Insomniac Games Goes Multiplatform

05/25/2010 Written by Sebastian Moss

In a shock announcement similar to Bungie’s recent move to work with Activision, Insomniac Games – famed for their Resistance and Ratchet and Clank series – have announced that they will go multiplatform. Previously, the developer made games exclusively for the PlayStation platform, but now they will develop for both the PS3 and 360 in partnership with EA.

In a tweet they revealed:

Insomniac Games is excited to announce that we are working on a new IP, that will be published by EA Partners on Xbox 360 and PS3.

Ted Price, President and CEO of Insomniac Games detailed the move in a blog post:

Hey guys, Ted Price here,

I wanted to speak directly to you, our fans, about some big news for Insomniac. Over the last 16 years, you’ve supported Insomniac by buying over 35 million copies of our games. You’ve explored with us the worlds of Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Resistance on PSOne, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3. And you’ve interacted with us directly through our online communities. In other words, we’ve gotten to know each other pretty well.

Lately, many of you have been asking, “what’s next?” Today, we’re excited to announce that we have created a brand new universe and franchise for you to experience in the coming years. As we develop it, one of our goals is to provide an awesome experience for as many players as possible. With that in mind, we’re working with EA Partners to bring this title to both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

You may be wondering why we’re announcing this game now, and how it relates to our existing projects. We’ve been developing games on an annual pace during the last 16 years. One thing that has become apparent to us though is that in order to live up to our own high standards of quality, we want to give ourselves more development time to iterate and polish our games. All future Insomniac titles will benefit from longer development cycles, which will directly benefit you, our fans.

We know many of you are extremely loyal to the PlayStation family, and especially to Resistance and Ratchet & Clank. We are too. Our relationship with Sony Computer Entertainment is still very strong, and continues as we develop additional projects exclusively for PlayStation 3 – projects that will take full advantage of our additional development time.

This is an exciting time for everyone at Insomniac – we look forward to continuing to create the high-quality experiences you’ve come to expect from us. From all of us here, thanks again for all your support. It truly means a lot to us.

What do you make of the move? Let us know in the comments below.

Thank God it not Activision or I will curse Insomniac Game name

well at least we know we won’t have to worry about a crappy PS3 port. I would assume since they have so much experience with it the PS3 will actually be their primary platform, though I don’t see Insomniac making any crappy 360 ports either.

  3. TheHater says:

Holy hell, my comments are showing up again :)

  4. @Giese095 I completely agree. Insomniac doesn’t seem like a company who would branch out for the sake of merely making a port. PS3 will be for the primary development, but they will put just as much work in any other game as well.

I for one have thoroughly enjoyed all the games from Insomniac. I can’t say that I blame them for going multi-platform. It all boils down to bottom line, staying afloat, and making profit. Good to see though that there will still be PS3 exclusives in the works.

  6. great more companies poisoned by ea… gaming is gonna die before the next cycle or during it.

  7. Richy2k9 says:

    hello …

i don’t care just bring us some games LOL …

as long as they are great why not supporting Insomniac.

    cheers!

I think its nice to see Insomniac Games spread the love. Look at it this way, they make a great multiplatform game, a 360 gamer plays it and enjoys it, then he/she may consider getting a PS3 to play other Insomniac Games, such as Ratchet and Clank and Resistence or even future PS3 exclusives. In other words, they will open 360 gamer’s eyes to see how good PS3 games are, such as my cousin who says “if its on ps3, I hate it.” And the dummy says MW2 is better than God of war 3.

You know I must say I’m completely buying that whole “more development time” spill that they implement with this new partnership, it can only mean greater things to future PS3 projects.

Yet at the same time this is EA we’re talking about. They put out games yearly. So I’m finding it a little hard to believe that they can meet the demands of EA’s yearly standards and meet their own demands of putting out yearly games for SONY. If this is really going to be the outcome of this partnership, then something is going to give.

With that being said I’m not so sure if we will be seeing a Resistance 3 this year. Either that or we won’t be seeing news on this new multiplatform IP this year. We can’t have both on the same window that’s for sure. They could only inhibit each others sales. I’m only really interested in Resistance 3 anyway.

Saw this coming a long time ago when they said they weren’t making enough cash.

This was inevitable to occur. It’s okay guys. Just wait till PS games gets announced at E3.

    :D

Is there a reason that Sony never purchased Insomniac? I’m sure they’ve tried, right? For a developer to stay dedicated and exclusive to a console for so long while not being owned by said console’s head honchos is virtually unheard of. I’m glad that they’re keeping their PS franchises exclusive while bringing new IPs multiplatform. EA is becoming an even bigger powerhouse this year with all these huge developers.

  13. ea doesn’t own insominac , they are just in the partners program like vaule , all ea will do is give them money to put there name on the box and to ship the games. they have no control over the games. as for what game this will be i remember reading rhwy were working on two games , im sure restiance 3 will be p3 only , while the other new game wil be muliti.

  14. Paranoimia says:

“Is there a reason that Sony never purchased Insomniac? I’m sure they’ve tried, right?”

    Yes, and yes.

Can’t remember where, but I’m sure I read some time ago that Sony enquired, but Insomniac chose to remain independent.

I must admit, I’m not as annoyed by this as I once might have been. I didn’t enjoy Resistance 2 as much as Resistance 1, and A Crack In Time wasn’t a patch on Tools of Destruction. So for me, currently, Insomniac are on a bit of a downward trend.

Perhaps new IP and more development time will inject some freshness into their products. Still, it’s nice to hear that they’re producing multi-platform and PS3 exclusives, but no 360 exclusives. Though I’m sure MS will throw money at them somewhere down the line to try and reverse that.

    @Xael

he never said hes making multiple yearly games for EA but 1 IP. Dont jump the gun so quick.. To say that EA will do X to X company is just guesses .. your forgetting that EA tends to do that with there own games they created.

  16. Rynxie says:

this is a BS move. EA is ‘exactly’ like Activision, they push yearly iterations of their products and every year the quality of said product goes downhill. In the early life of the ps3, these companies have been porting non-stop bs quality products to the ps3. EA and Activision are all about time exclusivity or simultaneously release and console equality. whatever comes from insomniac that’s multiplatform, i cant help but to think it wont be up to ps3 standards and EA will not allowed the ps3 development time to exceed the 360 or even delay releases. there wont be anything insomnaic can do about it either as EA will be calling the shots for multiplatform games. like my brother said i dont think insomnaic can hold up to all these demands, cant help but to think someone will get screwed over whether it’s: consumers (ps3 owners), insomnaic, sony, ea, insomnaic games quality, etc.. now we just have to wait and see

  17. WestSiide says:

im curious to see what kind of game theyll go multi on (probably some kind of shooter) and what they can do with the 360. the last game i truly enjoyed from these guys was r1. not too dissapointed by this news, now if it was naughty dog, that would be a different story. the way i see it is if its true theyre not being as profitable as they should be, then why not use some of the 360′s user base to improve their profitability. just throw us an exclusive every other year or so and were good.

  18. Rynxie says:

    @westside

Im tired of people saying “yeah multiplat is where it’s at. companies should go multiplat especially ps3 companies they’ll get more money from the 360 userbase” this is total BS now. maybe back then when the ps3 was expensive and the install base was small but that’s not the case now. the ps3 install base passed the 360, yes 360 sold 40 million units but out of that 40mil how many millions are inactive (banned, defected, etc.)? bayoneta and street fighter 4 (ssf4 as well) fifa 10 all sold more on the ps3, just to name a few. going multiplatform means insomanic would waste more money developing and would have to rack in sales on both consoles to make a profit now and how many 360 owners even know about insomniac or would support it? insomnaic could still lose profit

  19. Rynxie says:

and remember this is EA paying/funding for the expenses i doubt they will give insomniac more money and time to develop for the ps3 over the 360 so insomniac can take full advantage. which is why i wrote my other comment earlier

  20. This really is their North Carolina studio, the one in SoCal is the one still making PS3 exclusives. They definitely still have my backing.

  21. @Rynixe

Like a 12 year old on Ritalin.

Do you have a link showing the number of defective 360′s that are included in the total, or are you just talking out of your ass? Maybe if you stopped(wait for it…) sipping cum from Sony’s mouth, you could regain some lost brain cells and give a non-biased opinion.

    Or not.

    Keep on drinking.
