10 Free Games plus a PSPgo? What’s the Catch…

05/27/2010 Written by Corey Schwanz

If one were to have bought one of those new-fangled PSPgo devices after April 1st, 2010 Sony is offering 10 full game downloads. For free. Sounds good, right? Sounds like a great idea! If you live in the United Kingdom, that is.

MCVUK reports that Sony Computer Entertainment UK will shortly unveil a new program to entice gamers to buy Sony’s newest redesign. This coming shortly after their announcement of the PSP Essentials brand, starting in June. The games that are eligible for this new incentive program include Gran Turismo, LittleBigPlanet, 2010 FIFA World Cup, and Grand Theft Auto. According to SCE UK Sales Director Mark Howsen:

“On PSPgo we’ve decided to innovate with that particular business model. Next month we’re launching a free ten game offer. And this isn’t just older titles – we’ve worked with third parties and there’s some really good core products. We’re using it as a method to drive the hardware as well by making the whole proposition much more appealing.”

Man, Europe seems to get everything. First it was a copy of Gran Turismo with every purchase. Then it was a choice between GT, Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines, and Motorstorm: Arctic Edge. Now this? Maybe the PSPgo would actually sell if they tried some of these things abroad.

    How lucky they are! But I’d be curious to learn the crunched numbers and see how Sony is profiting from so much being given away. Thanks for the article.

  2. Wonderful, now who wants to buy me a Go?

    I’m in the UK and it still won’t tempt me to buy a Go. Why? I just don’t want the smaller screen.

    Small screens were the reason I gave up on portable gaming (I used to have an original Gameboy and a Sega Game Gear), and the screen size was key to me buying a PSP in the first place.

    I have a PSP-3000 with a 16GB Memory Stick… so I’ve certainly no need for a Go.

    I think the need to re-buy games you had on UMD also puts people off upgrading. If Sony offered a way of converting your UMDs – even if it were offered in-store only – it would help the uptake of the Go.

    @Paranoimia

    I recently came accross my game gear (doing some cleaning) and was actually taken back by how small the screen actually is. I remember when i first got my hands on it and popped in sonic, i thought to myself how amazing it was. Now even my cell phone has a bigger screen.

    OT.. even if this was offered in the US, i still wouldnt purchase one. good for people that are in the market for a psp go, but i have a feeling we’ll be seeing a psp2 very soon.

  5. I love my psp go, just not enough good games :(

    Still this wouldn’t get me to purchase a PSP Go if Sony had this offer in North America as well. I can’t stand the high prices on PSN for PSP games are years old that I can find cheaper at Gamestop or Amazon.com for a PSP 3000 instead.

  7. @Westsiide….. I don’t see how a PSP2 is around the corner to replace the PSP if a new marketing program is about to kick off promoting the PSP. I don’t know about you but when the new bad a$$ phone is coming out I’m promoting that sweet new hardware not the old outdated one

    That would be a beast of a gift idea, but everyone that i know that’s a game already has a PSP so I’ll just wait for a price drop or a new version.

    I’m buying one after TGS2010 (if they don’t announce a PSP2)
