PSP Gets A Promotion; Job Well Done Sony

06/01/2010 Written by Corey Schwanz

The US PlayStation Blog gave some great news today. Current, as well as future owners of PSPs should listen up!

It looks like Sony is launching some big portable deals today. First is the $9.99 “Favorites” software line, currently including titles such as Ape Escape: On the Loose, Buzz! Master Quiz, Hot Shots Golf Open Tee, LocoRoco 2, Patapon 2, PixelJunk Monster Deluxe, SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo, Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow, Twisted Metal: Head On, with more on the way. Currently those titles are Justice League Heroes, Manhunt 2,  Midway Arcade Treasures: Extended Play , Pinball Hall of Fame: Williams Collection, Silent Hill: Origins, Sims 2, The Warriors and “so many more.”

Next on the list is the inclusion of some great games. So great in fact that they’ve been deemed Greatest Hits! Big name titles too, LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo, Resistance: Retribution, and Secret Agent Clank. These can all be yours for the low, low price of $19.99. And even better news, all of these price drops have just taken place! In the stores AND online. Great news.

But wait! There’s more! If you purchase a PSPgo between today and March 31st, 2011 you will be entitled to three free full game downloads, dubbed the PSP “Digital Game Pack.” LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters and SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3 represent a big repertoire of the PSP’s capabilities. Unfortunately this doesn’t seem to backtrack for current PSPgo owners. Sorry guys. For any changes, make sure to check back at PlayStation LifeStyle for the latest news!

Great job Sony. Keep it up! Now there are just a couple other things you could do…

  1. Hardly a job well done. This promotion is pretty much crap because you have to purchase a PSPGo. You could buy a refurb psp3000 for like $130 and buy 3 games you actually want for cheaper than $250

Europe apparently gets 10 games with the purchase of a PSPgo which makes it even more laughable, but still doesn’t make it a good deal. Even though some of the games are big popular most of them are not.

PSPGo needs a hardware and software price drop on all titles. But really they just need to come out with the next gen PSP

    Needed
    -2 analog sticks
    -3G capable
    -better web browser

    Wanted
    -PlayTV in North America
-More remote connect features (would be cool if more PS3 games could be played through remote connect, but not a needed feature)

    Haha.. paid advertisement. :P

so you would rather them go back to giving you everyone nothing? be happy with what you get…the worlds supply of whiners never waivers

    @zerocool327

The Go comes with 16GB of onboard storage, which would cost at least $60. As for the other issues, we can only hope that the PSP2 addresses those issues. Personally, I’d like to see a flip-out keyboard to make an improved browser usable.

Aside from that, PlayTV isn’t available in the US because broadcasters would never allow it.

  5. Lol, what are you talking about?

I would rather them give me a promotion or PSP that is worth purchasing. They are a business, so why would I just be happy with what they give me.

As the numbers show, PSPGo is pretty much a failure. While PSP3000 still seems to pretty well, especially in Japan.

So what would you rather have:

    PSPGo w/ 3 games for $250 dollars

    or

PSP-3000 that can do everything the PSPGo can do and more for $130 and buy those games (~$70) or you can just buy ANY 3 games you want.

  6. The previous comment was @giese.

    @megs

The 16GB storage is great, but since PSP-3000 has UMD it really doesn’t matter. Granted they can be annoying to carry around and having the games on the system is convenient, it still doesn’t warrant the cost.

PSPGo really just needs a price cut and I was hoping to hear something about either that or PSP2 at E3, but that doesn’t seem likely now.

  7. giese095 says:

I don’t really care about the specifics, my point simply was that they could have just as easily continued to give nothing…so just be happy that they are finally giving something

  8. Psmgamer says:

Good deal but not as good as Europe’s though.

  9. Rynxie says:

my bro wanted a pspgo i wonder if this will capture his interest in purchasing one now

  10. @ZeroCool…. have you ever heard the phrase ‘Whiners can’t be Choosers’, what you want is a console in your pocket capable of doing everything. over 50 million units have been sold worldwide they all have decided one analog stick is good enough because they all know its a handheld, fact is when the PSP2 does get released people like you will find something else to whine about, not a big enough screen, the screen doesn’t support HD, its nice to have 2 analog sticks but why can’t we have 4 shoulder buttons?, it never ends…. I will be standing outside to get my new PSP2 day one but will you?

  11. @kick_in_the_face and giese

You guys are honestly confusing me. Why are you are acting like I am shunning the entire PSP system, when all I have been saying is this PSPGo promotion still doesn’t seem good enough to stop people from purchasing PSP3000.

While the PSPGo does have some nice things, it still doesn’t warrant an extra $125 dollars.

As for the PSP2, everything I mentioned except the remote connectivity and PlayTV (for North America) are possible without any stretch of the imagination. So I don’t know why you are preaching to me about anything they do I won’t like.

The 2 analog sticks would just nice to have, 3G capable just makes sense because they have to deal with the smartphone market, and a better web browser would also just be convenient. If some of that stuff isn’t in the PSP2 than its not a huge deal.

and the saying is “Beggers can’t be choosers” and seeing how Sony is in a business this saying doesn’t apply here anyway.

I guess I am just not as much of a fanboy as you two are, who will love anything Sony gives you.

  12. Bob_Bunz says:

This is a great deal! I’m so glad this is also available in Canada!
Now I can finally go out and buy that PSPgo system and get 3 great games.

I can’t stand UMDs. I would so rather have all my games on the harddrive.

    Good job Sony!

  13. Natiej85 says:

Wow, That PSPgo still has to drop down for me to purchase it. 200 bucks maybe because the freaking price now is too close to the price for a PS3.

  14. Jeez. Zerocool you can get a PSP Go for 200 dollars used. Comparing a used PSP 3000 and a brand new PSP Go is dumb.

I mean first off all you have the damage done by whoever owned it first, you don’t get the year warranty and the extended warranty options like the accidental damage insurance, etc…

The device is smaller, so it’s easier to carry around, there are many times where I would want to have my PSP with me, but don’t, because the bulk is a bit of a pain to carry at the moment and a more discreet one would be nice.

Also you listed these as needed…

    Needed
-2 analog sticks – I really do not understand why people feel the need for 2 analog sticks. I never play games that need them. What games other than shooters and maybe hack and slash games do you guys really need that second analog stick for? Besides would that second analog stick even be comfortable on a portable device? It’s 1 thing if you have 2 shoulder buttons so that you can aim and do different actions inependently, but putting 2 shoulder buttons on a psp and doing shooters? FFS just play games designed for a more portable experience. Those sticks aren’t that good for precision.

-3G capable – I seriously don’t think it’s going to happen. AT&T has the WORST infastructure and have spent the least amount, so between iphones, ipads, and PSPs I think people are going to be pissed ESPECIALLY if their PSP has to pay monthly for data access.

-better web browser – You mean more ram for your web browser? Cause that’s the most limiting factor.

Tell me man, what will be your complaint when Toys R Us, or Gamestop or some other company says “Hey 50 dollar gift card with purchase of a PSP Go” and then they get the 3 games on top of that, paying 200 dollars for the Go, having bluetooth, 16GB of memory (which would otherwise cost at least 60 dollars) AND having the 3 games, would make the PSP Go cost roughly 140-170 since you can use that gift card on what ever else you want, and you save money with those games?

At that point the PSP Go is WELL worth it. You gotta quit complaining about all the things YOU want, and just look at what ever deals are out at the time, and if you like a deal, then go for it, if you don’t like a deal, then say “I’ll pass”

They designed the Go for a different crowd than most of the people buying a 3000, it’s more of a luxury item, and sometimes there are some really good deals with it, sometimes, it feels a bit over priced.

I’m really tired of you saying “Used PSP 3000 versus a brand new PSP Go” that’s freaking retarded dude. Seriously. That’s just you trying to paint it in the most absolutely extreme light you can. Either compare a brand new 3000 to a PSP Go, or compare a used PSP 3000 to a used PSP Go…

I mean hell you can pay probably 50 dollars on Craigslist for a PSP 1000 or 2000.. What if someone found a PSP Go used for 150 dollars? Would it be worth the cost to you then?

The hate on the PSP Go isn’t warranted. Ya it’s not selling as well as they probably wanted it to, but at the same time they make MUCH larger margins PER sale as a PSP 3000. It’s good for Sony, and it’s good for SOME consumers. The PSP Go was never designed to be the only SKU, and they gave you a choice, but you’re acting like having that premium choice is a horrible idea. May not be ideal for YOU, but that’s YOUR choice to make. You’ve clearly made your choice, Sony’s probably testing the Go out like this so that they can figure out what to do with the PSP 2, cause they don’t want that thing to be pirated OR left behind.

  15. @MakaiOokami……… very well said, i also think the PSP Go is all about the PSP2. PSP2 will be digital only.

@ZeroCool…. either way you are whining, like giese095 said, you really are complaining that they are giving away something free with the purchase of their product, like you keep saying they are a business and as a business they dont need to give you sh!t

  16. The only reason I would consider buying is used psp 3000 is because I know you can purchase a replacement warranty on it, just not from Sony. But even if I decided to get a new PSP3000 it really doesn’t change much.

The PSPGo and the PSP3000 are the exact same system at their core. The PSPGo just has a different design, which I agree is more convenient than the large PSP-3000. But since other than that there is really no performance differences between them. So you are essentially paying $80 (or $120 if you don’t mind used systems) for extra convenience.

If and when those promotions happen and if Sony decides to price cut the PSPGo to $200 (which seems less likely now) it definitely would have been a better promotion than this current one and worthy of an article titled “Job well done”.

Corey just wrote an article just a week or so ago that mentions some of the things I mentioned. I originally commented here because he wrote that article and wrote this one saying ” Job well done” when they really didn’t do much of anything he mentioned.

    http://playstationlifestyle.net/2010/05/28/dear-sony-how-to-get-your-go-back/

As for the things on the PSP2

All the things I mentioned are things that would be extremely nice to see, but most of them wouldn’t be deal breakers if they made a PSP2. Except maybe not at least having 3g capability (depends on price), but since the smartphone market is a big competitor its hard to imagine they wouldn’t include that in a new device.

  17. Here’s the thing though Zerocool327. I don’t carry my PSP around that much because it’s too clunky. I sold all my UMDs to buy digital versions because it’s more convenient. The PSP Go is only 80 dollars more than a brand new PSP 3000, which sounds like a lot, but it’s roughly the same price as a 16GB memory stick. But the thing is, the PSP Go allows you to take a PS3 wireless controller, and connect it to the PSP, allowing you to use a REAL controller on the thing which helps for racing games and some platformers. Not sure about shooters, but…

So you can either use the PSP Go as an all in 1 device that fits in your pocket, or you can put a PS3 controller and the component cables with you with the room you save by not carrying dozens of UMDs by putting them all on a memory stick, and you now have essentially a portable PS2. Especially with all the PS2 and PS1 games that get ported over.

Now quite frankly it’s very likely that a PSP 4000 will be released this year, and a PSP 2 late next year. The PSP 4000 is rumored to have the bluetooth feature, but it won’t come with the free games, and when you factor in the cost of buying a PSP 3000 and a 16GB memory stick, compared to a Go, then you’ll arrive at roughly the same price. The PSP GO is more likely to come with gift cards during various sales which happen every few months, so this is a decent deal, and it gets better depending on stores that offer additional discounts.

The PSP GO white version is only $220. http://www.amazon.com/PSPgo-Pearl-White-Sony-PSP/dp/B002CZ756I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1275601429&sr=8-2

So at that price can you admit it’s a good deal?
