PS3 Firmware Update 3.40 Detailed

06/28/2010 Written by Anthony Severino

Sony announced last week that PS3 system software 3.40 was on the horizon. However, only PlayStation Plus was one of the confirmed features. Sony has now confirmed a slew of other enhancements coming as part of firmware update 3.40, including network photo gallery uploading, a video editor and uploader XMB function, a new power-save mode and more.

From the press release:

  • PlayStation®Plus: A new subscription service package on PlayStation®Network, PlayStation Plus offers gamers exclusive services and content on June 29, 2010, worldwide. PlayStation Network users will be able to purchase membership* to PlayStation Plus, providing members with new options to enhance their gaming experience and enable them to gain a special set of features and content. All PlayStation Network users will continue to have free access to its unmatched and expanding suite of new and exclusive content, services and community focused tools – including online game play – while PlayStation Plus subscribers will gain access to an exclusive and expanding set of evolving features, content and functionality.
  • Photo Gallery: A new network based photo sharing feature is now available on the Photo Gallery. The enhancement allows PS3 users to upload, browse and comment on photos on sites such as Facebook and Picasa Web Album. PS3 users can also opt to share their photos between their PlayStation Network friends.
  • Video Editor & Uploader: Video Editor and Uploader is a new function found on the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which enables users to edit, save and upload video files stored on the PS3 system to sites such as Facebook or YouTube.*
  • Five Star Rating Support: Users can rate PlayStation Store content they have purchased with one to five star ratings.
  • Power Save Settings: The default setting for PS3 System Auto-Off will be set at two hours, providing users with additional power save options and further improving power save features on the PS3 system
  • Additional Facebook Enhancements: In addition to the latest features introduced in PS3 system software update (v3.40), a separate, new PlayStation Network application will be made available on Facebook Platform. This builds upon what was previously launched with Trophies and the ability to share purchases from the PlayStation Store. Users can further integrate their PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts with this new application. The application allows them to display their PlayStation Network profile on Facebook, find out which of their Facebook friends have a PlayStation Network account and send them a PlayStation Network friend request, view the PlayStation Network friends’ online status, and add the PlayStation Network application tab on their Facebook Profile. More information will be available at: http://apps.facebook.com/playstation/.

Continued system software upgrades and the evolution of PlayStation Network ensure that the PS3 and PSP systems remain compelling offerings for years to come, with no additional investment from consumers. Further details and instructions on how to update the system software for the PS3 and PSP systems are available at http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Features/SystemUpdate and http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/psp/.

    no xgc…. this is getting old…

    Although, what is there is sort of good at least, i guess…

  7. Krakn3dfx says:

    Wonder if a Netflix HD installed version will fall into the PSN+ camp. That’d be a shame, but I can see it happening unfortunately.

    Also wondering when the HD installable PS3 version of Netflix will even be out.

  8. TWOshay2 says:

    it seems lik every update they copy from xbox…first in game xmb,trophies,background downloads, then avatars, then with update 3.0 and the “whats new” channel, now facebook linker, photo streaming ,community rating system and ps plus, auto shut down,deal of the week…omg but ppl still think ps3 iz better than xbox

  9. TheHater says:

    meh. Still not universal Party system nor cross game chat :( For all the online multiplayer gamers out there, this feature is a must.

  10. again with the cross game chat….just pick up a cellphone.

  11. @tootergray

    It’s the cross game voice chat plus the party system that you need to make it work. Talking to all of your friends as a party no matter if everyone of you is playing a different game. That’s what we want. This stuff sounds great too though, i’m liking the picture uploading.

  12. TheHater says:

    @tootergray34
    and waste me and my friends minutes?

  13. Odin Final says:

    @tootergray34 @ thehater *join conversation
    you can always use Skype ;) yes laptop or PC is required, just saying it’s not something that worth all the buzz and it will be integrated soon.

    2things that get me interested in this
    the rating system:D finally I can give that 5 stars
    PSN+ 15 month of happiness

  14. Zak Islam says:

    Can’t wait for PS plus.

  15. wtGp says:

    that would be sweet if netflix was for psn+ since it’s awesome already

  16. tau_caste says:

    xgc… who cares… me and a friend were talking about this the other day… IN PERSON.. and we think its pointless.. why do you need to talk to your other friends soo much? i mean i barely talk to my closest friends through text chat… because i actually go and hang out with them and play spitscreen games instead of playing someone halfway across the world..

    you really need to consider it like this (imagine): your playing MAG or something co-op online, you are listening to what everyone is saying about strategy etc. but then your friend decides they want to XGC.. so now your not listening to strategies etc and could really be annoying your team-mates. then again, if it still incorporates the game chat and the chat with a friend then things will just get messy and annoying for everyone else.. if you need to XGC then why dont you actually just get real friends and play somme split screen or play different games in different rooms and yell at people!

  17. megs1120 says:

    Awesome, being able to tell what people think of games is one of the coolest features of xbl, it’ll be a welcome addition to psn

  18. @theHater,

    waste minutes on what…your boost mobile phone? bahhahhahahahahaha

  19. Rynxie says:

    cross game chat is dumb. jesus christ you xbox fucktards demanding it. the majority of ps3owners do not want this gay ass feature.

    anyways. is theother stuff in this firmware free or only for psn plus members?? cause im really interested in that video editor

  20. ENiGMATiC_HiTMAN says:

    Whoa! The uploader feature sounds sweet!

    Will I now be able to upload uncharted 2 footage with this?…liking the new features, keep ‘em coming sony.

  21. enough about xgc already

    on the playstation blog share website there are 14,000 votes for it —- but there are 14 million ps3 users in north america alone so that’s 1/10 of 1 percent
    and that is only if there weren’t users posting multiple + votes on different accounts
    that means 99.9% of users just in north america don’t want it or don’t care .

  22. rainrox says:

    give me a way to arrange my friends the way i want to. like grouping them in which games i play with them and stuffs.

  23. im just happy to see sony moving forward and making my playstation experience wonderfull. no complains from me.=)

  24. TheHater says:

    @tootergray34
    was that supposed to be funny? Grow up

    @FJ1100_rider
    and i am sure all 14 million PS3 owners care about the Playstation blog. You are a fucking idiot to even have written that.

    @Rynxie
    So people that want cross game chat are xbox fucktard? Why do they even own a PS3 if they are xbox fucktard?

    @tau_caste
    Have you played Demon’s Souls online with your friends? I think I proved my point.

  25. EpicNiki says:

    I personally can’t wait for cross game chat.

    I don’t really see a point in assuming that people who want to have cross game chat don’t have real friends, considering that most of my real friends now live in other parts of the country or world due to work or military. Not everyone has access to Skype, Ventrilo, or some sort of voice/im system in the same room as their Ps3 either.

    Unlike the last communication feature of Text Chat Rooms I think that Cross Game Chat will be utilized better by Ps3 users that want it. If you don’t want it, then don’t use it. Just like that Text Chat box system, no one is forcing you to accept a XGC request when you play a game. I think everyone knows that.

    PlayStation Plus is definitely a must buy for me anyways, I plan on getting that year subscription ASAP! I wish that instead of giving us “select” titles of their own choosing, that we should pick what games/stuff we are interested in, but with caps on price: PSN Games=$14.99 and below PSone Games=$9.99 and below and so forth. But I hope that they give better choices or maybe allow a vote to see what games will be up for selection for the next month.

  26. giese095 says:

    don’t be so hateful Hater, just because everyone doesn’t agree with you doesn’t mean you have to be an a$$. Good for you that you want XCG so badly, but I am with the others when they say “who cares?” As far as wasting your cell phone minutes, just wait until night time or the weekend and you should have unlimited. If you and your friends are playing games in the middle of the day then you should all probably put down the controllers and go get jobs anyway.

    I’m not saying that XCG wouldn’t be nice for some people, I’m just saying I don’t feel it is necessary. My main complaint with it has always been that I don’t want someone talking to me about random stuff when I’m trying to play a game. Kind of like I don’t want 12 year olds screaming and whining in my ear when I’m killing them either.

    I don’t think anyone would really complain if they gave us XCG and they aren’t actually saying they don’t want it, just that they are sick of people begging for it and they don’t see the need for it. It is pretty sickening when people constantly whine about not getting it when obviously Sony as well as everyone else already know you want it. It will come or it won’t, get over it.

  27. tazinlwfl says:

    Honestly, I’d much father see Skype come before XGC… I want both, but if I’m gonna get PSMove and PSEye, I better use that camera for more than just a optic sensor… I want to be able to talk with people OUTSIDE of PSN for video chat. My friends list isnt that big anyways, so XGC would go mostly untouched for me… (although it is getting bigger, and more of my REAL friends are getting PS3s… Until then, we just talk on the phone :-P ).

    If they roll out Skype first, I don’t people would complain… As long as they KNOW XGC is coming…

  28. tazinlwfl says:

    @giese095 — you said it best – I know a few people that don’t care for XGC, but it doesn’t mean the say “don’t put it on”, it’s more like, “don’t/won’t use it. Don’t/won’t care”.

    People that insistently whine and complain about it every mention of something having the most obscure reference to a PS3 feature, the cry about XGC. It’s like, everything Sony does is pointless until they get that. That’s psychotic! You are seriously messed up in the brain if you HAVE to say something EVERY time it comes up. And not even a legitimate opinion, but a “aaaahhh XGC!! No Have!? You FAIL!!!11″ it’s like Tourette’s or something… People like myself that would like to see it, but rather would have OTHER features (including ones like they’re adding with 3.40) are extremely annoyed… If you want to be taken seriously: lay off the Internet speak and talk with as much maturity as possible. Don’t flame people, and don’t spam with crap WE ALL KNOW! Sony doesn’t read some random blog post’s comments. Even if they did, they’re not like “well, if HE wants it, we MUST hurry!”… Relax

    (and I want to make clear that I’m not complaining about any specific person… Just next time you are about to type those three letters “XGC”, try to remember that you shouldn’t…)

  29. Natiej85 says:

    Got my PS3 updated a few mintues ago, waiting on the PSP update

  30. Meghterb says:

    Looking forward to these features.

  31. @the hater,

    me grow up? i’m not the one who wants to group chat with a bunch of dudes on PSN…

  32. Rynxie says:

    @thehater

    because cross game chat started on the 360 and when 360 owners started transitioning to the ps3 thats all they demanded for. before this i never heard of anyone wanting cross game chat. none of my ps3 only friends want it, i dont want it, and none of my friends who own both 360 and ps3 want it, my brother doesnt want it either. its stupid and only360 fucktards want it. majority of ps3 owners do not want this gay ass feature

  33. Rynxie says:

    so thehater if you want this feature then take your ass to the 360 and go play gears of war while you help your friend strategies on halo 3 and totally ignore whats going on with your team on said game you are playing. then you can drop 150 for kinect but before you do go buy your new and improve 360 with added wifi (mind blowing whoa man take it easy MS).

    shit the only thing cross game chat will start is people muting from the get-go. it will seriously have me muting people and thats something i dont want to do as a ps3 owner. this isnt the 360 where muting from the get-go is a must. its a very useless feature. when i play a game i want everyone focused on said game not have god forbid 2-5 people in my team babbling to their friends on other games. its hard enough trying to talk over people in MAG who wont shut the fuck up when im trying to guide my team or give locations.

  34. ok ok ok guys…it’s clear that ….The Hater…has conceded to the fact that he is a loser…he is currently group chatting with a bunch of his guy friends while playing with Milo.

  35. SpeCtR says:

    (as im writing this from my ps3) cross game chat would be nice…altho hater has some points…tooter, wherever u came from u mite as well go back.. u get 2 thumbs down 4 ur korny boost mobile joke..milo gets 2 thumbs down as well…try again next time :| (work blokked me from my beloved PSLS damnnnn themmmmm!!!!)

  36. ThatBoyTim says:

    I am not fussed about Facebook – I would rather see Twitter integration. I like the sharing photos between PSN buddies, and uploading vids to Youtube. Not sure what I would use it for but I like it.

    Cross game chat seems to be high on wish list, so what the heck I want it too!!

    Video Editing – is this going to be the same that is bundled with PS3 Eye ?

  37. sNsKid says:

    I’ve deleted my facebook and don’t ever plan on getting a new one. I spend way more time on Twitter. I really like the video editing, but they need to allow custom music. I hope someone find all of the “hidden features” soon. There are small changes I’ve noticed that no one is even talking about.

  38. I want cross game chat because it sucks not being able to communicate with the rest of my team in BFBC2 dammit!

  39. what about the Deep Color for HDMI setting under display settings?
