Hideo Kojima’s Own Ultimatum
Hideo Kojima is consistently named by fans and industry experts alike as being one of the most influential and innovative Video Game Directors and Writers of all time, as well as being on many all time director top ten lists.
Unfortunately the legendary creator of the Metal Gear Solid franchise announced via Twitter that if he messes up his next project he will retire from the gaming industry.
Kojima had this to say:
The next project will challenge a certain type of taboo. If I mess up, I’ll probably have to leave the industry.
Many (including myself) would find this a extremely harsh ultimatum, however Kojima won’t be alone in his possible final stand. He then added:
However, I don’t want to pass by avoiding that. I turn 47 this year. It’s been 24 years since I started making games. Today, I got an ally who would happily support me in that risk. Although it’s just one person. For a start, it’s good
Despite many fans speculating that Kojimas next title will be Zone of Enders 3 (oh please let it be), it seems a tad unlikely at this stage. Nevertheless it would be a great shame and loss to the gaming industry as well as the gaming community if such a big influential game creator and director would have to step down.
Whatever his upcoming project may be we here at PlayStation LifeStyle have no doubt in our mind that it will succeed.

This is my guess. Wait, wait. I have two:
1) He wants to show a sexual assault in a game, or…
2) He wants to make his main character/protagonist a homosexual man.
It’s probably #2.

Maybe something referencing 9/11 is the “taboo” he’s talking about?
Yeah, he could make a 911 game.
It would make the news for one night and give him free publicity, and no one would care (remember the “controversy” over MW2′s airport set-piece?). No one would care about that. And 911 is no where near as taboo as it used to be…and it was only that way to Americans. Guess again.
It has to be something that would make him leave the INDUSTRY. The guy is as good as GOLD in the industry. What could make someone as successful as H. Kojima leave? Failure. What is failure to a dev?
A game the masses hate and ridicule for years (Superman 64).
The lowest point in HK’s career (if he ever really had one) was when he made Raiden the main character of MGS2. Ho mophobic fanboys made such a big deal out of that (and still do to this day, idiots). The game was still good, but hurt HK’s rep so much that IMO, it hurt the sales of the best game in that series (again, IMO) MGS3: Snake Eater. People actually assumed HK himself was g a y, until they found out he had been married to a woman for years, idiots.
Anyway, if he put a g a y protagonist in a game, people would eff-n freak, and he’d have to leave the industry.
But it doesn’t matter. Konami would never pay to produce or distribute something like that anyway.
It could be something homo centric. I know in each Metal Gear Solid Game, there’s a least one homoerotic thing, however small, it was there.

new Policenauts, didn’t the original have some risque stuff for a videogame during it’s time. WIth new graphics, it could be pretty bad.

i think its probably MGS5 that he’s going to work on next. I can’t see the franchise ending with just MGS4.
If you’re going sexual taboos, there are much more shocking things he could base this on than just homosexuality. That wouldn’t be enough for him to leave the industry. I mean… pedophilia, necrophilia, incest, bestiality, genital mutilation, rape in general, etc etc… but thats just sexual. I’d say drugs, but Heavy Rain hit that one pretty hard. Then there’s the certain things I hesitate to even type. Slavery, racism, the holocaust, and god forbid, something political or religious! I hate politics and religions, but thats probably what would stir the pot the most really. Those are the two things that can always turn any conversation into a heated argument. Compared to most of these things, homosexuality is pretty freaking tame.
Just to keep him in the games industry people should buy it and pretend to like it, it’s not the gamers he’ll have to worry about though it’s the reporters and newspapers who’ll blow whatever he makes out of proportion.
It’s a good thing Jack Thompson is at least gone, I can see him calling Hideo’s game the 2nd Pearl Habour like he did with GTA despite GTA being made by British/American games designers.
I have a feeling that this “taboo” is to do with cannibalism! Anything sexual will not work in a video game (the “love” scene in Heavy Rain was awkward and not really essential to the story). Sex is something that the average adult (except maybe Shadow Runner) doesn’t regard as taboo anymore, even when it involves the rear doors and members of the same gender!
Cannibalism however, is illegal ALL the world over. Those Uruguayan rugby players from the film “Alive” were damn lucky to get away with it, and if they hadnt done it in order to survive, they would all have been imprisoned for the rest of their natural!
My money is on cannibalism
