The past few years have been a dream come true for fighting fans with memorable games like Street Fighter IV and BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger entertaining millions, and upcoming releases such as Marvel vs. Capcom 3 still in the pipeline. However, the show isn’t over as a new fighter is preparing to enter the ring. Comic Con has now become the stage for one of the most surprising announcements for the fighting genre in years.
Both Capcom and Namco have partnered to create a new fighter titled Street Fighter X Tekken. Yoshinori Ono and Katsuhiro Harada took the stage at Comic Con today as thousands of fans cheered, and Ono said the following:
“This is history we’re making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn’t just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I’m going to give it my all.”
Street Fighter X Tekken is being designed on Street Fighter IV’s robust engine featuring the proven 2D-fighting formula that fans have been enjoying accompanied by some new exciting gameplay to revitalize the genre. A Tag Team mode will be included which features several options to create a high-level of cooperative play with combo abilities and more.
A debut trailer accompanied the announcement which can be seen below:

tekken 6 sucked (in my opionion cause my favorite part is the individual stories and unlocking characters… neither existed in tekken 6) so hopefully this will revive my interest in the franchise. i kind of wish it was being designed using tekkens engine instead of street fighter… with sfiv and ssfiv the graphics r getting over played
They’re making two versions:
Street Fighter x Tekken will be made by Capcom and resemble 2D fighting.
Tekken x Street Fighter will be made by Namco and resemble 3D fighting.
It’s all a matter of preference as to which one you will buy.
2011 is gonna be an exciting year for fighting games.
@NukeA6; Hell yea, it is also going to be the year I’m going to have the thinnest wallet ever in my life!
I think they made Tekken 6 way too difficult, I am by no means a fighting game guru but I think a beginner just picking up the game should be able to get through arcade mode on the easiest difficulty. The last Tekken I played before 6 was Tag Tournament on the PS2 and that game was a ton of fun and not nearly as difficult. On the other hand I really don’t like the 2D graphic style of Street Fighter. If I want a 2D fighter I’ll just play the same games I have had forever on my older systems. I didn’t buy a PS3 to get old school graphics.
Someone plz explain to me how the hell this is going to work?
Tekken characters on average have around 100 different moves.
Street Fighter? LM Punch
LM kick, an so on. And a small set of specials.
And do you mean to tell me that both companys couldnt come up with enough ideas to make ONE version? You know everyone’s going to follow the 2D version anyways. Honestly this sounds kinda ridiculous.
we all know street fighter fails at a 3d fighting style so lets go with the superior 2d game play that capcom is perfect at , it is going to be way better
Exactly. To me, this just sounds like Capcom milking Streetfighter now (since all of a sudden they realize how profitable it really is). And Namco Bandai cashing in on the hype train just because Tekken 6 didn’t sell as well.
I’m sorry but I still can’t take SFIV’s character models seriously. look at the picture above, Ryu looks like a monkey. Its sad they’re reusing character models, wish they’d been more original like with Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. (that Ryu is a better representation of the 2D version)
I’ll be too busy with Blazblue: Continuum Shift to even care. SFIV was garbage in comparison IMO. The closest I’m gonna get to playing a street fighter game is Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (Which I do enjoy) & MvC 3
Capcom is taking OVERR!…..and IM coOl with thaat!!!! xD
Street Fighter characters are going to get there asses kicked on the Tekken version one reason why, hadoukens can be side stepped
