Will PlayStation Plus Let You Change Your PSN ID?

08/02/2010 Written by Corey Schwanz

Do you want to change your PlayStation Network ID? Already a heated subject, there are reasons for, and against, letting PSN users change their identity. Will PlayStation Plus bring this feature, which is actually already available to the Japanese market?

German PlayStation website PS3-Sense believes that this feature will soon be coming to the Western world. According hackers on EFnet, a major IRC networking website, this will be coming to PlayStation Plus members in the near future. Sony has never publicly mentioned any sort of ID changing system before, so, although this sounds like a welcome new ability, we have no other conformation that this will be coming. Which is odd, considering that the Japanese PlayStation audience has had the power to change their ID for quite some time. Don’t believe it? Check out the video.

Do you think that this feature will ever make it past the Land of the Rising Sun, even if only for PlayStation Plus subscribers? Let us know in the comments below. At least for me… well… I think you’ll know what my thoughts are merely by checking out my profile.

Not in the US since we have proven that our userbase is more likely to use it to get around discipline rules etc…

  2. wtGp says:

didn’t know that japan implemented this a long time ago. This would be another fine addition to North America as l would love to change my id something better than this.

  3. ZombieHell says:

I love my PSN ID: ZombieHell and I’m not planning on changing it

I was just wondering for future reference… If i make a video showing some random feature another region has, and for a completely baseless reason make a video proving it exists… then posting it on the net with pointless credentials, will several news sites also post it as news?

if sony wanted to enable it, it would have been a starting feature, i am sure as well as most of us know this will lead to people scamming, accounts being sold, and other unwelcome things… I mean i think a lot of people would pay 17 usd to change their name to ____ person with a rep and then scam people, not to mention it will make things harder since it goes off the display name, not really the real name, this would also make reporting harder…

my friend demo his real psn id is I. R. S. which only appears when playing spelunker/ikki online… this is quite obviously not required to know since i’ve added him with his demo name, he doesnt abuse it… and most people dont think so far ahead to make a japanese account to scam people, which they would need since PSN names only support roman characters

  5. Microshock says:

that video doesn’t prove anything. He made a new PSN id. And he changed the name of the user.

  6. Meghterb says:

So Japanese players get to change their IDs and we don’t. Sony has to add this feature to PS + users.

  7. Rictor says:

so now you can attempt to spell Sephiroth a little better, eh. I like mine, I can’t wait for all the people who want this feature to realize that they might get the name they want, but they’ll have to add X____X or 2010 to the name. My name is the same as my tag here, and I’m glad I don’t have any numbers (or X’s)

  8. Who cares? It’s not like the PS3 has any real gaming community.

What a stupid thing to wanna do…!?!

I know I would like to change my PSN ID, and I really don’t know why we can’t already. When I first created mine I wasn’t very creative so it would be nice

  11. Kaminari says:

You can NOT change your PSN ID on PSN Japan, and thankfully so. You can only change your screen name, which makes more sense and should be an international feature.

  12. John Smith says:

I wish I could have changed my PSN years ago. I can’t count the number of times I have created a new account because I became dissatisfied with my name. I have purchased Super Stardust HD at least half a dozen times because I am just OCD enough that I have to own the games on the account I use. I finally just threw in the towel and decided that I am not making any more accounts.

  13. @AssasinHD, you do realize that a PSN title is sharable up to 5 times right? If you make 5 ID’s on you can play the same DL on all ID’s, no need to re-buy it.

    Peace,
    VG

  14. John Smith says:

Yes I realize that. Like I said though, I am just OCD enough that I have to have the content attached to the account I am using. It would bother me to have an old account on my PS3 just to use the software.

  15. i thought everyone knew about that :/

  16. John Smith says:

Like I said Mischief, I am well aware of the 5 seat license. I know that I could leave the old account on my PS3 and use the content with any other account that is attached locally on my PS3. I am aware that I could use my account on up to 5 separate PS3 systems. I am also aware that I personally cannot stand to have my PS3 cluttered with old accounts. So I just repurchased the content and called it a day. It is not financially wise, but I have enough disposable income that I was able to bite the bullet. I would rather just repurchase the content and not be bothered, than have clutter on my system that would bother me every time I looked at it.

  17. the only people that want something like this are those who put their birth year/current year/random numbers in their name, misspelled their name, a clan tag that they’re no longer a part of, or haven’t thought long enough to figure what they’ll use permanently for sure.

  18. Some sound advice: Remember these complaints if you find yourself going for a tattoo; you may think it looks cool now, but five years down the road… :)

  19. newozkar says:

Very happy with my ID and not thinking at all to change it. Maybe this feature should be implemented at some cost, to avoid repeated ID changes every day, like a 5$ fee or something.. that will make each one to select his ID better :P

  20. John Smith says:

    @capt.fodder

That is very sound advice indeed. :)

  21. FiftyQuid says:

$49.99 to change your PSN ID doesn’t sound like a great deal for people that haven’t signed up for PSN+. PSN ID changes is going to push them over the edge and make them sign up? Doubtful. It’s a nice feature, but it really doesn’t have much purpose.

  22. I love my PSN name. Honestly, the Japanese can keep this perk, in my opinion.

nuclearwarfare is the greatest PSN of all time lol no way would I ever change it.

  23. HavocBlack says:

Now if only u could make a sub account into a main account my old account is still stuck under my dads main account it sucks i don’t even live at home anymore and he still controls some of my stuff
