It has been heavily rumored for quite some time now, and PlayStation 3 fans have been clamoring for it ever since its release on the Xbox 360. Now, after half a year of waiting, we have the first official word on Mass Effect 2 making its way to the PS3.

A trailer at the EA GamesCom conference has confirmed that Mass Effect 2 will be on store shelves for the PS3 in January 2011. This release however does not include Mass Effect 1, and there were no details as to the inclusion of any added downloadable content.

  1. YES!! now all ps3 needs is left 4 dead and i will never need an xbox 360. i was planning on getting a slim for this game and left 4 dead and maybe fable lll but i wont get a console just for one game left 4 dead and mass effect will be enough to make me not even need a 360!

  2. Meghterb says:

    OMG lol last week I saw the ending on YouTube and ruined the game!!!!

  3. TheHater says:

    lol is this a joke EA? Not only is ME a better game than ME2 (my opinion, deal with it), but ME2 had a lot of story elements that depended on ME. Whats the point of playing ME2 if you don’t understand some of the relationship between characters or events of the second one

  4. newozkar says:

    Just saw this on GT.. whats so interesting of the game? :O thought it was on xbox and pc i think..

  5. newozkar says:

    Oh yeah.. in the trailer they are using the OLD PS3 logo.. not the slim new one that appears on every trailer plus here and there.. Does this mean this trailer is old but they didnt show it before? mmm????? MMMM???

  6. Pre-ordered. This game was a blast on PC and I’m ready to roll with the new content and trophies.

  7. Adam G says:

    @newozkar

    I thought that was a little odd as well… Hmm…

  8. SmokeyPSD says:

    patience guys. pretty sure mass effect won’t be far off with this.

  9. Timewarp says:

    awesome. I hope this means the third game is coming to the PS3 as well.

  10. There is now no need to get a 360! :D

  11. Richy2k9 says:

    hello …

    i got ME1 off steamy site for a really good price, now need the PC for IT & play ME2 on PS3 :P

    unless a bundled version comes on PS3

    can’t wait for it!

    cheers!

  12. Absolutely pointless without ME1.

  13. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Odin Final says:

    I think the first one is coming as well but

    LOL @ Meghterb

    man that suck don’t you hate when that happen;)

  15. SolidCake_ says:

    Mass 1 was published by Microsoft Game Studios, so it’s doubtful they would release on PS3,
    the game is far from pointless, relax, I’m sure they will handle the choices with style and ME 2
    will be a great experience.

  16. Microsoft Game Studios also published Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden 2…but look how it turned out!

    Maybe that rumored “genesis” on the title is the way to get away with it from Microsoft”s contract.Like what happened with Ninja Gaiden Sigma.
    Anyhow EA could easily explain the whole story of 1 in this version of ME2…ME1 was a great game although it had a lot of issues…glitches,loading times e.t.c, but now it’s kind of outdated.
    It’s not pointless starting the series on the ps3 with ME2 if they’ll do it properly.The best part is that ME3 will be multiplatform :)

  17. Timewarp says:

    You just know for the next couple of days youtube is gonna get filled to the brim with 360 gamers complaining about this appearing on the PS3.

  18. @timewarp

    They will hide their anger and disappointment behind “it’s pointless it’s just only ME2″ kind of quotes
    sour grapes i tell ya :)

  19. dbigfeet says:

    so is this a good thing?

  20. Timewarp says:

    Yep we’d react way better if the 360 got Metal gear solid *remembers he’s huge rant* Oh wait….>_<

  21. who ever said me1 is better then me2 please revoke any kind of gamercard you have. i only drudged through so i could see what my choices did.

  22. ZombieHell says:

    Alright. Now all we need is Left 4 Dead1&2

  23. WestSiide says:

    this is good news i guess. these games are very story driven so im not sure how itll work out for those that havent played 1. Part 1 establishes not only the main story and characters, but also gives you an insight of the galaxy, the different races and the history behind them, the inevitable politics between them, what a spectre is and how shephard became the first human to become one, etc etc.

    I still havent played part 2, so maybe they re-introduce these things again? But how can you play a sequel to game that is so complex without playing the original?

    so for those that think part 1 will inevitably be released someday, well dont you think they would have done that first? Its like playing the god of war series backwards or out of order. just wouldnt be the same.

  24. @westsiide

    The could easily put a movie intro explaining the story of 1 and an ingame database for the insight of the galaxy,races the history behind them and the characters.
    ME2 originaly was supposed to be played also as a stand alone title…

  25. JackC8 says:

    This looks like an interesting game. It’s sort of what I was hoping Vanquish would be – a sci-fi shooter that DIDN’T constantly move at 1,000 mph. As far as the first one, they’ve said this game will include “hours of bonus content”, so that could very well include an intro movie explaining the story. People tend to really overestimate the importance of that stuff anyway. Just because you don’t have a complete knowledge of everything that happened beforehand certainly doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the game a whole lot.

  26. SmokeyPSD says:

    JackC8… In the 1st game, there was countless of choices, which carried over, into the sequel and shaped the story… it read the information in the save game…

    This isn’t just about background knowledge. It’s about having continuouity for everyone’s experience.

  27. kirobz says:

    Good news. I just bought the PC collector’s version last week due to price drop. And it was great! I plan to buy the 1st ME. I hope EA would bring the 1st ME to the PS3 too.

  28. Timewarp says:

    Insomniac just played a dick move, they let EA Games show annouce Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 then showed off Ratchet and Clank: A4O and Resistance 3.

  29. if you wnat the full masss effect experience i’d still play it on the 360 , with the import from me1 to me2 to me3. if you never plan on getting a 360 no matter what than this will be good news for you. me2 alone is a good game, but having the me1 choices you made effect how the story is told in me2 made it great. you can have things happen in me2 that others won’t get in theres.

  30. Timewarp says:

    Yeah but I don’t really care what happened in Mass Effect 1, I’ll pick up what happened from the start of the second game.

  31. Choices you made in ME1 doesn’t affect the main plot of ME2 almost at all…it affects only some interaction between characters and that’s really not a big deal when it comes to the main plot.
    We still don’t know if they’re going to release ME1 on ps3…there’s still a possibility.
    If not EA will surely wrap it up and give the ps3 a little extra.They announced that there will be hours of content that will make the series perfect entry to the ps3 whatever that means ;)

    Maybe this isn’t just a port….after all there was a ps3 code featured in the 360 version before the game was even released.

    [SFXGame.BioSFHandler_CharacterR?ecord2]m_nMaxRenegade=1900
    m_nMaxParagon=1957
    m_srXPFormat=340881
    m_srSpendTalentPointsMessageXBox?=348754
    m_srParagonRenegadeMessageXBox=3?48755
    m_srSpendTalentPointsMessagePC=3?48753
    m_srParagonRenegadeMessagePC=348?755
    m_srSpendTalentPointsMessagePS3=?348755
    m_srParagonRenegadeMessagePS3=15?3007

    that could mean a slightly better version or the same…anyhow people who intended to buy a 360 just for the ME series alone doesn’t have to anymore.
    After all there are still PC versions of ME1 and 2.So this whole full mass effect experience only on the 360 is just Bull***.
    Mass Effect is multiplatform…end of story

  32. Natiej85 says:

    The is a bunch of bullshit!!!!!!!!!! I just fucking bought the games yesterday for the Xbox used. DAMNIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. themule says:

    I borrowed a 360 last year to play some games and I finished Mass Effect 1, it was a glitchy, kinda-unfinished and unsatisfactory experience in my opinion. No better than a 7/10, really. However I also recognized the good points of the game and definitely wanted to play ME2 to see if the story pays off, and also to see what all the fuzz is about. I couldnt get a (functioning) 360 to do it, now I think I will.

    Actually I got one 360 borrowed and played ME2 for about 1 hour (the 360 RRODed shortly after), I remember I got to a scene where they questioned Sheppard ( the protagonist) about a decision he made in the first game when you had to choose who would live or die between two of your characters. Since I no longer had my ME1 save, the story just went along mentioning which character had died (not neccesarily the one I chose in ME1) , it was completely irrelevant to the story, just part of standard interrogation and it seemed very gimmicky if you ask me , just so we as players can say “hey look, I did that in ME1!!”

    Hey, if that’s all the ME1 save is good for, then I don’t give a damn about this so-called “continuity” using the old-save. Sooo lame. However, I do agree EA should find a way to release ME1 as part of a collector’s edition or something.

    If they release both games I have no doubt they will be a lot more appreciated by the PS3 user than ME2 was on the 360, but limiting the fanbase just to 1 of the games is not a good move and it will hinder sales.

  34. Natiej85 says:

    From Gamefly not Gamestop. So it was pretty much beaten, just wasted to get the next game which is DEMON SOUL. So can anyone tell me where to go to get the Collector’s Edition or is this gonna be a EBay deal. WIth me paying way too much.

  35. @themule

    They are not limiting the ps3 users with only one of the ME games.Releasing ME2 on the ps3 is a clear indication that ME 3 will follow not in the same manner as 2 (1 year later) but simultaneously in every platform like Dragon Age and Dragon Age 2.

    ME1 is kind of outdated to be released as a ps3 title now, plus it did had a LOT of issues (glitches,loading times e.t.c)so EA will find another way to fill up that “space” and make it up for the ps3, maybe a less expensive method taking less risk which it might be much more appreciated than just releasing a kind of an outdated 4 year old game that most probably very few will be interested in now.

  36. themule says:

    @NoctisLucisCa

    Well, I remember the original Xbox got Metal Gear Solid 2, and it’s not like they got the first game or any other afterwards so… I think they could release ME1 as some kind of PSN game…at the very least I expect ME2 to come with some kind of prologue (video or something) where the previous story is told.

  37. @themule

    so you are saying that this could also happen with ME2 as the only ME on the ps3 as MGS2 was the only MGS on the Xbox and none other afterwards?
    The difference here is that back then Xbox had much less userbase than the ps2 had.PS3 has a little less userbase than the 360 now but it’s gaining momentum and it isn’t like the differences between PS2 and Xbox userbases.
    Plus you may have already figured it out but Sony and EA are in some very good business together which shows their “bond” lately.
    There’s no question now if they will release another ME title after ME2 on the ps3

  38. Its funny how people agrue over the internet about ME 1 being outdated and Ps3 not needing ME1 because of the bonus cd with introduction to it. Well I have both systems and I’m a really big fan of the ME series. I love both my Xbox and my Ps3 they both have their pros and cons. As a fan of the series this game is very story based and the saves from ME1 are not overatted and are not a gimmick. ME 1 serves as an introduction to the franchise you get to make your ME series more personal with the decisions you make in example if you chose to keep someone alive, decide the fate of an entire species, have people like or hate you. They might be showing you the events on a bonus disc but the experience is better. A lot of people don’t understand that maybe because you haven’t played it but you don’t necessarily need to get an xbox get it on pc if you hate the xbox so much. Don’t hate on ME 1 cause you don’t have it, I bet if it was coming out this forum would be different. And honestly I’m 100% glad its coming to the ps3 more people would actually get a chance to see how amazing ME2 really was and if ME1 comes out one day for Ps3 I’ll be happy for you guys instead of hating and whining. I’ll still get it for the fun of it on ps3 and trust me you guys are gonna love ME2 Fight for the Lost ;) can’t wait for ME3 !!
