New Zealand Minister Dismisses Game as a Medal of Dishonor

08/29/2010 Written by Kishen Patel

When the resurrection of the Medal of Honor franchise by Electronic Arts was revealed and showcased at this year’s E3, the general consensus was grateful of the EA Los Angeles and EA DICE collaboration. Only weeks after the extensive announcements of the in-game factions and oppositions, however, great controversy was raised pertaining to the ability to play as oppositions of today’s ongoing war in the Middle-East.

Adding on to the list of protesters against the modern-day first-pereson shooter is the Minister of Defense of New Zealand, Wayne Mapp. According to the New Zealand Minister of Defense:

“This game undermines the values of our nation, and the dedicated service of our men and women in uniform. Terrorist acts have caused the deaths of several New Zealanders. Hundreds of New Zealand servicemen and women have put their lives on the line in Afghanistan to combat terrorism, and this month Lieutenant Tim O’Donnell died in action over there.”

While the struggle in the Middle-East is nothing to take lightly, it is ultimately up to the consumers to judge whether or not they will support the product by purchasing it because it seems like with Medal of Honor, freedom of speech will reign superior among the outcry. What do you personally think in regards to the situation? Tell us in the comments below.

Who the hell cares? Game on motherfuckers.

  2. Mapp brings up a good point, but if you’re going to start coming down on video games, you might as well come down on films, books or anything else that involves these things.

Lol it’s a game after all. But I still find it unfair that it’s totally okay to kill Iraqis/Muslims or Russians in video games and movies because they’re terrorists or bad people, while it’s not okay to kill the Westerns soldiers.

Anyway, I think all this is planned by EA. This is going to make the game more famous.

It is a game about Modern Day Warfare, we no longer fight National Armies. We now fight a Religious zealotry that uses innocent people to hide behind there way of fighting. It is really hard to feel sorry for Politicians that are just now saying something. And what they are saying is really hard to deal with. Maybe they should ask their own foot soldiers as to how they feel about a game like this. They might be surprised to find that many of them have already become part of the beta to make the game better for those who will end up playing it.

It is those in the Military that will play this game on their time off and on bases around the world, I would not doubt that it is a way to relieve stress from a patrol or mission that might not have gone the way they needed it too. And it could be used to help in hospitals to diagnose and maybe help with PTSD issues when they return from a Warzone…

Those that generally speak out like this may not have in any way participated in any meaningful way in fighting in the Military or they would know.

I never understand why governements and politicians go crazy over video games but think its ok in movies and TV.. strange..

  6. I guarantee you that if another incident like 9/11 were to happen tomorrow that even us gamers would not want to play this game.

this game will blow like battlefield!

  8. kirobz says:

I really find this a big BS. How come no one banned the best fps to date.? A little game called counterstrike.?

  9. ZombieHell says:

    @smokey_vols

Don’t talk such shit! I (along with millions of others) would still be playing aeriel combat games, historically accurate fps games or whatever else game you could think of that ties into the real world in some way, EVEN IF a plane hit the Whitehouse or 10 Downing Street, or a suicide bomber took out an underground rail station.

YOU are exactly the type of person that video gamers don’t need spouting crap, and putting words into other gamers mouths!

Stop playing games indeed? I brand you an idiot for all eternity!

As long as George Bush is in the white house and Barrack’s away with he’s family I’m ok with the white house being bombed.

  12. Zeto23 says:

What about Counter Strike and Battlefield 2 ……………

  13. nemo20000 says:

With all due deference to the lost and their mourners, the Taliban are rank amateurs compared with the Nazis. Where’s the outrage at being able to play as a German in a WW2 game?

Actual headline should have read “Politician says something obvious and populist”, then we could have ignored it.

  14. @ST-ANGER

Your screen name fits you perfectly. I’m a gamer for life my friend.

    politricks & video games don’t mix…

  16. mumbles says:

I see videogames as an outlet for violence… sort of like an alternative to… although it’s not exactly like I’m a ball of hate. well, except when it comes to EA’s servers. this game will probably suck anyway! back to Bad Company 2!

  17. I’m a United States Marine that has served in OEF & OIF. I appreciate EA for attempting to deliver a realistic story to what is going on in the world today. Personal Responsibility needs to be exercised here to realize this is a VIDEO GAME. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. But please don’t make it something that its not. Just shut your face and go do something else. Thank you.
