A surprise firmware update, system software 3.42 has now hit the PlayStation 3 and is available for download now.
At the moment it’s not clear what this minor firmware update does, but we’ll be sure to update this article as soon as we figure out exactly what it entails. However, if we had to take a guess, we would assume that this is related to all the “PSJailbreaking” that has gone on as of late.
[Update] According to reports around the web, this mandatory 3.42 firmware update kills the functionality of all the recent major PS3 exploits such as PSJailbreak, PSGroove, etc.
Could this be the response for PS Jailbreak in Australia???
@SPD55 thats what i was thinking
It does block the Jailbreak.
From: eXoPhase
“Update: We can confirm that all variants of the USB-hub emulating exploit (PSFreedom, PSGroove, PSJailbreak) are no longer functional in firmware 3.42.”
they probably didn’t want to announce it so that some of those who want to use the hacks would just do the update unknowingly
playstation WIN!!! lol
there you go pirates
PS3 IT ONLY DOES HACKERS PWNAGE!!
XD
hello …
A.M.E.N !
cheers!
Sony just BITCHSLAPPED the hackers. OWNED!
Great… Now I can’t run any homebrew programs.
Not all people who did the exploits wanted to pirate games.
The hackers are foiled for now, but I’m sure they’re thinking of something else. This may just be a temporary block before Sony puts together something more concrete for security via the USB ports.
Cold zip Blooded!
Thank God.
if you thought sony was just going to sit by and do nothing , thats your mistake , i would take this as the first warning , the 2nd could be what microsoft did , and brick your system if it detects the jail break.
Isn’t the process during start-up?
Of the exploits and all, if they pretty much just KILLED that then they’re totally good with the update.
FOR ME at least my XMB moves faster now since the update… May just be me honestly, or I was just going crazy or something.
does any 1 know the direct link to dwnload this update? i dont wanna do it twice for both ps3′s thx
dring, if you’re looking for the download you can do on your PC and upload onto a flash drive it is usually on the official PSN website but they never update that site right away, it always takes them a while after the update goes live. Here’s the link anyway for when they do post it

its not up yet but this is the site…learn to use the internet so you dont have to ask easily answered questions….or use forums for help when you need it….forums are thataway —-> http://playstationlifestyle.net/forums/
awesome
cheers giese : )
2 Things.
1. Hackers unfortunately already have a way around updating their ps3′s, while still using PSN.
2. Sony should really make the next ps3 update so that ps3′s download updates automatically while not in use like PSN+ they don’t even need to include the game update downloading if they still wanna keep it as a premium feature. This way hackers wouldn’t be able to avoid updating.
Remember folks psjailbreak was made from a devkit sony made for developers. Who didn’t think Sony would know how to counter it??

I totally agree with Exovedate about this 1 …
& I was waiting for a FW update since i was running into weird issues since the last 1, i just hope some things get fixed.
SONY should find some radical solutions to this while not penalizing legit owners like with the otherOS removal.
will keep an eye on this!
cheers!
Hurrah. One in the eye for all those smug “leet haxxor” pirates.
Meanwhile, the ability to run homebrew on the PS3 is still desirable to many.
If Sony were to invest some time making a safe sandboxed environment for small apps with internet connectivity, there’s a whole world of functionality possible without introducing the spectre of game piracy.
there crackers not hackers….
but it is fun watching them cry on the psblog
I’m tired of the jailbreak.. I don’t want to have to keep on updating, thank goodness it’s over, for good i hope.
I just want my freaking linux back. It’s no wonder we’re facing Jailbreak and such. This isn’t the end. Only the beginning. I said this when OtherOS went down. Jailbreak and more popping up just affirmed that.
I’ve only just started enjoying the content my PS3 has been getting and freebie workarounds like PSJailbreak and PSGroove would’ve surely minimized or even kill dev support for the platform. I knew Sony wouldn’t have let me down. Keep on roll’n… PS3 FTW
!!
Uhh…PSJailbreak would not kill dev support of the PS3…look at the 360…although on the other side the psp is pretty much dead and the only reason I have it is as a portable emulator for all my favorite old games. Hell even the DS has blatant amounts of piracy and the only people that were going to do anything about it were the developers started to put in things in their games that just needed a work around.
good to hear about this.. last thing we need is Sony to lose money over hackers
Sony 2 : 1 Pirates
What’s next?
So… I didn’t have to download this update yesterday. Which means to me that either this article was posted at night after I logged off… or its an optional update? Which wouldn’t make sense. I’m confused and am going to assume I’ll have to update when I get home, dammit.
Well this was obvious, homebrew channels are now banned. Hardly matters apart from the one person in these comments who actually made homebrew channels anyway? By the way does this include Folding@home becasue their not really doing anything wrong.
I bypassed the update now. PSN Works fully!
