Final Fantasy XIII No Longer PS3 Exclusive in Japan

09/07/2010 Written by Kishen Patel

The big stunner at the 2008 E3 Microsoft press conference announcement that Final Fantasy XIII was scheduled for a simultaneous release on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the United States. The consolation to this news was the JRPG’s exclusivity in Japan but even this stipulation came with a cloud of uncertainty. Safe to say, the rumors proved to be true.

As confirmed by popular Japanese magazine, Dengeki, the Square Enix blockbuster is scheduled to release on the 360 complete with English voice acting and a few additional goodies. One such confirmed extra is a new “Easy Mode” most likely tweaking the difficulty in favor of the new potential buyers.  But why release a game over a year later in the Japanese region on a platform that is not as successful? There are undoubtedly owners of the Microsoft console in the area that may have purchased the console for other Square Enix RPG’s even. For those owners, this re-release should serve as a welcome addition for their American machine.

Looking back at the other Final Fantasy related rumors, such as FF Versus XIII abandoning its PS3 exclusivity, there is good indication that these can and will come to fruition as well.

  1. Oh yeah, THIS will sell well…

  2. themule says:

I predict 100K total sales in Japan. What a total waste of 3 DVDs + plastic + paper.

  3. vesra says:

more power to them. i have decided i don’t care what these 3rd party companys do anymore. except, develop for the ps3 1st and gimp the 360 versions already. clearly the ps3 is the better of the 2 and has been picking up large amounts of steam worldwide. won’t be #1, but damn sure close to taking #2 now.

  4. another indication that Versus XIII will take the same road and will fail apparently.SE really has lose sight of things this gen.Seems like Microsoft’s talent at kiss ass really works on them.
Seriously though i don’t like how SE turned to be this gen, less quality, less depth in their games and a lot of greed.(act kinda like Microsoft’s bitches)I was a big fan of them…not anymore.I’m not buying any of their games unless they change tactics. At best rental but nothing more…

  5. MEGAZILLA says:

I am sorry to say that SONY has a gorilla grip on the FF13 in JPN.

  6. I never liked Final Fantasy series, They are dull, bland and boring.

I remember my dad bought FF7 for my 7th Birthday and i played it and i hate it so bad, i just burnt whole game disc. Ahh great old time.

To be honest i don’t F**K if FFseries will be XBOX360 in future. I just love when PS3 gamers upset about this and complain on fourm

  7. @MEGAZILLA
Awesome name and you could safely say Sony has a gorilla grip on Japan period. Walkman outselling iPod. The only major country where the PS3 is outselling the 360 (I’ve only seen American, Canadian, and Japanese numbers).

  8. Well no Final Fantasy after XIII are on 360 so I think we might have the franchise back. Here’s how I see it. Rockstar North and Square Enix only made GTA IV and FFXIII multi-platform so they could afford all the new HD tech.

  9. Natiej85 says:

SE can get bent cause I’m still haven’t gotten 13, because unless it’s on a whole new level because I need something more.

  10. Waaaaaaaaaaahhhh. Sniff sniff. Waaaaaaaaaaah.

  11. I just want to know how many games they really think they will sell in Japan on the 360? Not only is it on the 360 but its incredibly late. At this point, its basically like…what IS the point?

  12. wtGp says:

why spread this terrible game to more of the community. l guess they want to scarp up any cash they can get

  13. Krelian says:

The cause of this news is because FINAL FANTASY versus XIII will be in XBOX360 too, a form to have a complete package, Nomura almost confirmed in a tweet, its really sad this news, check this out (what a way to be hands tied up…) http://twitter.com/3rd_birthday/status/23862212526

  14. eddacosta says:

The reason they make games is to make MONEY, so I don’t care, as long as it’s not 360 exclusive I’m 100% OK.

  15. weapon178 says:

The fact is that the 360 is not a popular console there. Everyone knows that and it does seem pointless but if MS expects to make it there they have to provide what would be considered one of the most famous game franchises.

I can see how it looks like a dumb move here but M$ doesn’t need to give Japan another reason NOT to buy the 360 right?

  16. KwietStorm says:

I really can’t begin to imagine what the board meetings look like at SE these days. Not only has the quality in their products taken a nosedive, but they make decisions like these all the time now. I really don’t get it. And they think that ‘westernizing’ their products is the solution. Good luck to you dumbasses.

  17. megs1120 says:

They should take Lost Odyssey, rename it Final Fantasy XV and port it to the PS3.

  18. themule says:

@megs1120 huh? that game could be Final Fantasy X-3 maybe, but not XV…. LO was average anyway, nothing remarkable about that game, trust me.

  19. ZombieHell says:

Hey you guys are right. Xbox 360 is like the least popular console in Japan (judging by the sales). I doubt 360 version of FF13 would even sell half of PS3 versions sold

  20. Kinda seems pointless… Oh wait it is.
I miss Squaresoft, SquareEnix is ridiculous half of the time if not more.

  21. Kain81 says:

i dont support a company (SQUARE-ENIX) that have no RESPECT to his Loyal fanbase

  22. JackC8 says:

An easy mode? God god, I spent 15 hours pressing X.

    Ugh.

  23. yeahhhh… now japanese xboxers can feel our pain!

@jack – on easy mode you might as well just duct tape the x button down… holy crap, this game couldn’t have gotten easier or more boring!

  24. megs1120 says:

    @themule

Still way better than FFXIII. :/
