What the PlayStation Logo Could Have Been

09/09/2010 Written by Anthony Severino

Today the PlayStation brand turns 15 years old along with the brand’s iconic “PS” logo. However, that logo wasn’t the original concept for PlayStation. Would the PlayStation legacy be different if it used a different logo?

When the PlayStation was first being conceptualized, many different logos were proposed. Check them out:

  1. Thank goodness they went with the classic! LOL!

  2. WestSiide says:

yea that’s classic now, but if they had gone with something else, that would be classic today.

  3. ZombieHell says:

If you were to rotate the first one and change the color it would kinda look like the PlayStation Move Symbol

  4. Thank god they stuck with the one we have today. Most of those are lame in my opinion.

Sometimes as a designer, when you propose concept logos, you intentionally put crappy studies so your client will pick the one you put the most effort into or your favorite. (I should know im a graphic designer too) hehe :p

Glad they picked the PS logo we know and love, such a powerful logo…

  6. I agree with all of you. I’m glad they picked the one they did.

    @ZombieHell
    You, sir, are totally correct…
I’ve seen these before (a long time ago), but more recently, a friend of mine (@Sony) was talking about the Move logo, and mentioned that it had come from an old playstation logo concept. I never put the two together until seeing them on the same page (the image with all ofte logos, with the link to the Move store right below).
    I guess that’s what he meant…

wow their other ones look so weird

The original PlayStation almost was a Nintendo console so that would explain some logo styles in there reflecting the Nintendo art-style . The 2nd from top to bottom on the 4th column is very reminiscent of the SNES/Super Famicom logo.

    ^er I meant fifth column

What I liked most about this logo is that it has perspective. 3D perspective if you will, a good representation of the 3D gaming era the PlayStation was the first true advocate.

  12. I knew I’d seen that first logo somewhere before.

The lettering style always reminds me of wipeout. It has similar letter styles, and was one of my first PS games.

Wonder why it’s taken so long for this story to come come up. this image has been on Wikipedia for a long time

  14. I think by the time they were actually making a Playstation logo that the whole Nintendo partnership had already fallen through because it wouldn’t of been called Playstation if the deal with Nintendo had gone through. The plan was for Sony to make a disc based add-on for the SNES, not a completly new console.

  15. For me the PS logo is OK. Too simple… too O. I’d say medium. Bewtween those proposed, my favorite is the first on the second row, the one with squares that look like monitors.
