The PlayStation 3 ‘Greatest Hits’ line-up offered by Sony gives gamers some of the best PlayStation 3 titles the console can offer for a low, affordable price. Atlus’ Demon’s Souls is undoubtedly worthy to be on the list and has been added to the ever-growing list of PS3 greats.

The PlayStation 3 exclusive is now an official Greatest Hits title and available for the low price of $29.99. “Praised for its fearless redefinition of a multiplayer experience, heralded for its visceral combat and haunting world design, and beloved by fans for its ruthless difficulty and endless rewards, one of the finest games of its generation now proudly takes its place among the PlayStation 3 system’s greatest offerings” Atlus explains.

Tim Pivnicny, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Atlus had this to say:

“Very few games reach the esteemed PlayStation 3 system Greatest Hits status. Those that do are among the very finest the platform has to offer, combining critical success, tremendous popularity, and exceptional quality.  Demon’s Souls represents some of the biggest risks, loftiest goals, and most daring innovations ever embarked upon by a developer.  Its arrival into the exclusive ranks of PlayStation 3 Greatest Hits validates its designers’ achievements and helps bring their unique vision to a larger audience.  Priced to own at only $29.99, there has never been a better time to find out what everyone’s been talking about.”

Copies of Demon’s Souls with the new Greatest Hits packaging will be arriving in stores shortly. Those who are interested in Demon’s Souls and its original packaging would be best served by picking up a copy as soon as possible before supplies run out says Atlus. 1. As many complaints as I have about this game, its one of the best RPGs I’ve played on the PS3, if you don’t count Borderlands (its more shooter) and Valkyria Chronicles (its more turn based strategy). I think I got it for about this price too, thanks to PSLS pointing out a sale. Don’t ever stop pointing me to the sales please!

  2. Matt Baker says:

Indeed. Agreed. One of, if not the best RPG.

  3. WestSiide says:

haven’t tried this one yet. all I ever read about this game was about its extreme difficulty and player frustration. that kinda turned me off. is this anything like Elder Scrolls?

  4. themule says:

Wow, that’s a MAJOR RECOGNITION, to be included in the Greatest Hits library. I wonder if this somehow give us a ray of hope for a future sequel or “spiritual” sequel of sorts. It’s also interesting to point out all games included in the Greatest Hits library (usually) get sequels.

  5. @westsiide – having never played the elder scrolls, I can’t say. However I will note that the majority of frustration and difficulty is in the beginning of the game when you have relatively no abilities or power. Once you acquire some magic and a decent weapon, difficulty starts to diminish – although dying and returning to the beginning of the area is almost always infuriating, I can’t count the number of times I wished for a better checkpoint system. I found the end game bosses surprisingly easy, except the last real fight. Its worth trying, but it will take some determination. The game also has virtually infinite replayability, since you can go new game + as many times as you want with a character.

  6. Didn’t they shut down the servers on this game?

  7. @smoke@dellic – No. Apparently they will be online at least until March 2011 – final date probably to be determined by any further sales acquired from this Greatest Hits move, since they made this announcement just a couple months ago.

  8. WestSiide says:

    @Bigwoop

hmm.. might just have to be up for the challenge. Didnt hear about the servers being shut down. How big does this game rely on being online? Can you still get the “full” experience if you arent or choose not to go online?

  9. I actually choose to play offline most of the time. The game has something called “world tendencies” which change according to certain actions within the game. In order to achieve all the trophies, or just special weapons and items, you need to manipulate them to Pure White or Pure Black for special events to occur, and they also effect enemy difficulty and value of items they drop (black is harder enemies better items, white the opposite). While online these tendencies are averaged between the online players, and as a result you’re always pretty close to neutral.

The game also has something called being in Soul form or … uhhh… Body form, I think. While in Soul form, HP is halved, among other things. While in body form you are full powered, however upon dying you return to soul form, until you defeat a boss or use a special item. While online in Body form, you may be “invaded” by another player, who will try to kill you. They are in Soul form, and if they are successful in killing you they return to body form. This is part of what makes demon’s souls online unique, but I find it pretty annoying too, since I build my character for PvE instead of PvP.

Also, while in “body form” as I have dubbed it, and online, blue glyphs appear on the ground (which you may make while in soul form). This allows you to summon up to two other players as a temporary ally, or if in soul form, be summoned as an ally.

This is more detailed than I originally intended, but for even more in depth info (my god!) go to the Demon’s Souls Wiki. I guarantee if you’re ever going for achievements it will be an invaluable resource – but there’s a ton of stuff there that I wish was explained in the manual or in the game as well.

  10. WestSiide says:

Thx for the info.. I’ll check it out!

  11. Lol, calling this one of the best exclusive PS3 RPG’s is like saying I took a fantastic shit this morning.

It may have been a good shit, but it’s still shit.

  12. Matt Baker says:

    @ Nosferatu King:

    …….

  13. I’ve had too much to drink.

    That was a horrible analogy.

What I meant to say is that…well…there ARE NO GOOD EXCLUSIVE PS3 RPG’S BESIDES Demon Souls. That’s it. The only one. The rest are garbage.

Demon Souls is good, but compared to the rest, that’s not saying all that much.

  14. Matt Baker says:

You have a point, maybe that’s why it’s praised so much.

  15. wtGp says:

    now there’s a price befitting a game

  16. 30 buck for pure insanity nice

  17. themule says:

Well, in my humble opinion, Demon’s Souls sits atop the best PS3 games (not just exclusives) to this day, and only one of maybe 5 of them I’d be hard-pressed not to score a 9 (the other games being Little Big Planet, Uncharted 2, God of War 3, and Metal Gear Solid 4).

  18. themule says:

Well, I meant DS is a the top with the best, not topping the best…It’s really that good, but you have to be like me to appreciate different kinds of games and give them their rightful place.

  19. !@King

what other RPG’s are exclusive to PS3? I really can’t think of that many that were that good to begin with.

But this game is amazing! if you haven’t played it yet do yourself a favor.

  20. sold , i knew the price was gonna go down so i was waiting for a price drop instead buying it for 59$ than have it go down to 29$.

i hear alot of good things though.

  21. @tootergray34
White Knight Chronicles. Wasn’t very good with the reviews on G4 but it looks intriguing to me. Just wait for the sequel. One con. You need to play the first one to play the second. One BIG pro. Because of Sony’s ability to not rip people like Microsoft, they’ll be giving you the first game along with the second game for the same price of 65$.

  22. @King and tooter – Valkyria Chronicles? I consider it more of a strategy game, but its been dubbed “RPG strategy” by numerous people…
