First Resistance 3 Screens and Concept Art Leaked

09/28/2010 Written by Adam G

Well, it’s been a while coming, but after the official announcement at this year’s gamescom, fans of Insomniac’s alternate history shooter, Resistance, finally have some screens of the Burbank studios latest outing to gawp over.

The screens, leaked on to one member’s Flickr account, give away some potential information on this little known game. As already postulated, the St Louis Arch and New York will be features in the game, and, according to some of the titles of the images, we will be playing, or at least encountering, one of the protagonists from the previous game: Capelli. Other locations from the pictures appear to include an abandoned prison, an underground shanty town and a place known as “Haven”.

Take a look at the screens for yourself. First impressions on the look of the game are fairly positive: the game has a lot more graphical oomph this time around and the feel is certainly in keeping with the teaser trailer they used to début the game. We can’t wait to see more!

  1. first looks look amazing. can’t wait to see some in game video footage.

  2. too add what i said alot of games have stepped up in terms of game play and graphics, uncharted , god of war have really pushed the ps3 , insominaic needs to bring there A+ game to the table to blow every one out of the water , like killzone 3.

  3. #12 and #15 Look pretty freaking sick. Always loved the weapons and enemies in these games. gimme gimme.

That extra year of dev time is doing a world of good!

  5. Looking good, but I was also impressed with R2 screens when I first saw them and that game didn’t turn out the greatest.

  6. wtGp says:

actually R2 did turn out great just as this will be. Those are some crazy looking new chimera.

  7. @wtGp

To some it did, but to most it wasn’t what it could have been. The game was fun, but rushed to the point that it didn’t live up to it’s potential. No story co-op, no direction in multiplayer, on-rails boss fights, bland graphics. I actually prefer R1, but it’s just my opinion.

  8. haskell420 says:

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  9. WOW! Look at the insane amount of detail in the chimera’s face in that top picture! AWESOME!

  10. Zak Islam says:

    R2 was great fun @smokey

  11. looks like an old ethan mars

  12. WestSiide says:

one thing i really liked about R1 was that no matter how many chimera you killed through out the stage, every single one would be in the same exact spot where you killed them. I think they would disappear after a while in R2. Its those little details that really impress me. In Gears of War they would disappear almost immediately with just a weird looking puddle of blood. I didnt like that. I hope R3 turns out great.

  13. co op is only good if its not forced into a game. and it makes sense with the story . if theres a solo part how does co op fit in?

  14. giese095 says:

I don’t see how R2 had bland graphics in comparison to R1…R2 was so much more colorful.

Either way, I liked both of the Resistance games and I can’t wait for the third. The details on the Chimeran faces look amazing. I only have one request…I don’t need any more of those creepy things that bursted out of their “eggs” and ran for me. A few would be alright but I don’t need a whole level dedicated to swarms of those things running at me like there was in R2.

  15. I never got into R1 that much (it felt boring and one tone), but might have to add R2 to my collection before R3 arrives.

Also tried the demo for the PSP. Of course, you should never form an opinion of a shooting game when it comes to the portable as they are obviously not meant for it.

However, taking down something that is X times bigger than you is always fun.

  16. tazinlwfl says:

Is it me, or does that one “new” chimera look sorta like an alien from Men In Black?

Great images though. Obviously not all of them “screens” as much as being concept art…

  17. I think this is just Nathan Capelli and not Haven Capelli. The first sign is the scar on the left cheek. The second sign is the eye color being the color of an infected.
Hopefully Capelli isnt a douche this time. I dont care for him.

  18. Blkant says:

This looks more like R:FoM than R2. Hmm… I’m listening once again, maybe they wont fuck this one up entirely.

  19. Adam G says:

@shaper of form, yeah I think you’re right. Haven is probably a place, not a character. Will amend.

  20. TheHater says:

why are these screen shots so colorful? These clearly don’t capture the atmosphere and vibe from the teaser trailer

  21. TheHater says:

    @shaper of form
You do know that Nathan last name is Hale right?

  22. @Zak
Ya, it was pretty fun lol I enjoyed it for awhile, almost got the platnium but got bored with the multiplayer before I finished the 10,000 kill trophy.

    @giese
I wasn’t directly comparing the R2 graphics to R1 but compare the graphics of R2 to games like Call of Duty 4 and Killzone 2 that were out around the same time and you can see a large graphical leap in those games.

Not bashing the game, but it is obvious that it was rushed to meet the yearly game window that Insomniac wanted to hit and the game wasn’t what it could have been. Glad Insomniac has thrown that schedual out the window and decided to take longer on R3. I promise you guys i’m not the only one who thinks this way lol, just read this interview http://www.videogamer.com/news/insomniac_fans_believe_resistance_2_was_a_failure.html

  23. @shaper of form – if I was infected with something that was turning me into an alien while said aliens were taking over the earth and my only option was to battle them until either they kill me or the virus takes over… I’d be a douche too. I hope he still is, to stay true to character.

  24. @TheHater
I meant Joseph Capelli and not Nathan Capelli. Thanks for calling me on it.
Nathan Hale does not appear at all in these shots.

    @BigWoop
To me it appears they did a complete redesign on Capelli. Hes more Grayson-like in these shots. Hes not big and muscular and hes not sporting a stupid skullcap. I dont mind if he still has some attitude problems, but his character seemed so one dimensional in R2. He was just a big jerk that kept disrespecting Hale. Which Hale is my man. A real hero who understands sacrifice. Capelli finally grasped Hale’s commitment and sacrifice by the end of the game. Which hopefully that has some effect on his personality.

  25. Adam G says:

@TheHater I’m not saying it looks like the teaser trailer, but it has a much better, more distinctive art style than R2. Looks atmospheric, just like the teaaser.

  26. ps3 has the best exclusive shooters coming out for it and are already out. mag, killzone 2, killzone 3, resistance 3, and to some resistance 2, the agent. like holy shit nice exclusives. and uncharted 2 and 1 and 3 is coming out in the coming years. what does the 360 have? gears of war3 and halo reach they are good but not enough. ps3 also has littlebigplanet 2 and granturismo 5 and modnation racers and god of war 3 and final fantasy 14 and many more like a new game from quantic dreams which will be like heavy raina and also playstation move and its games and and motorstorm apocalypse and socom 4 and many more like twisted metal. so come on microsoft step up your game

  27. Man it really sucks and hurts that good ol’ Nate ain’t comin back for this installment *sigh* he was tha best damn soldier out there hands down. Still I honestly cant wait for this game

  28. My sentiments exactly Frank.

  29. The game looks like its definitley going back to the first games roots. Those screenshots have an earie feel to them and the first resistance had a survival horror feel to it. Thank god Insomniac isn’t listening to the fans on this one because the fans ruined Resistance 2.

I still remember the insomniac game night in RFOM were people told the devs we where playing with that they wanted more colour and fucking perks added to the game. Insomniac stupidly listened to them.

My only complaint is that the game doesn’t have uncharted 2 type graphics. Some of those screenshots look Alan wake graphics and some look slightly hazey

  30. To be honest I dont think these are screen shot’s, to me they appear to be artist rendered drawing’s basically concept art for what the game might look like when completed, although in fact it does look alan wake-ish, im jus sayin.

  31. vesra says:

    @ Frank
that would be an awkward game. considering he’s missing a huge chunk of his skull. lol

Hale will be missed, seeing these pics just makes me wanna go all the back to r1 and work through both of the games. i so can not wait, not even done with RDR but would drop it in a second to get my hands on this.

  32. This both rises my soul but also slightly dampens. Is the PS3′s max power being found? EH! Who am I kidding?! It can do more.

  33. Hopefully, it’s better than the piece of shit that was R2.

  34. @ Versa
LMFAO nice, but seeing as Hale was insomniacs franchise player they should’ve never off’d him to begin with, im jus sayin.

nonetheless insomniac has some huge freakin shoes to fill with Hale gone, its like man dont make us grow fond of a character and then scarface him and give us a lame bum to work with

  35. HavenXL says:

To the ones saying Capelli had a redesign… Nah, he just stopped shaving. It’s hard to find Bics in post-apocalyptia.

  36. Thats Nathan hale talking to the blonde women in one of those screens. You only see the side of his face but its definitley Nathan Hale, which means he wasn’t shot at the end

  37. vesra says:

    @ Frank
i feel ya there, just when i didn’t think i could like Hale more *BLAM*

but i did like the look of utter respect in Capelli’s eyes after the shot. thought he was gonna cry for a sec.

    @geddesmond2
you may be correct about that being Hale, but its not the Nathan from the end of R2. this would lead me to think flash back.

  38. Adam G says:

@Haven, I’m sure the Chimera have Gillette

Anyway, this game has the St Louis Arch, which was built in ’63 (so assume it’s the same in this alternate history timeline), and the other games were set in the early ’50s, so about 10 years will have passed.

  39. OH MY GOD!
I was one of those people that bought a PS3 at launch and my very first game was RESISTANCE. I don’t care what the haters will say… R2 was just as good as R1. I want to say, “f” any other shooter, RESISTANCE 4 LIFE!
How many you got 10,000 kills online? I know I did. lol.
R3 will be amazing! I loved the story from R2, except I would have liked a 3rd person narrating. Online was much better than R1. I loved Co-op Mode, the action is straight up intense!
For R3, I would like some new guns, new enemies, to be somewhat of a lone wolf, closure, dlc with classic maps, new game modes ( similar to BFBC2 rush mode), more co-op missions with class modifications, and a sonic resse blast to top it off!!!!!!!

  40. Xael says:

I got the Platinum for R2 lol. Took me months, in three motivational spurs, I took 2 long breaks from it (Since the cheaters in the Multiplayer really tested my patience and they put a damper on your overall kills/game) But finally I did it, felt really satisfied too. I’m hyped for R3

have you played part 1? it was filled with glitches, bugs, controls were a little broken. part 1 was completely rushed. part 2 was a way bigger step up. r2 had its own story co-op that was intense and a lot of fun. and dont even get me started on the multiplayer aspect of r2.

  42. Psmgamer says:

I am kinda getting a Gears of War vibe from the Chimera redesigns. Overall the concept art work looks way better in my opinion its truly going back to the roots of Resistance Fall of Man. I thought Resistance 2 was good in my opinion but short but the online multiplayer was really great. I am hoping Nathan Hale returns some way some how. I know he was killed off in Resistance 2 but he could be brought back to life again.

  43. @rynxie

I bought R1 with my PS3 on launch day and it’s still one of my favorite PS3 games.

  44. tazinlwfl says:

Just to confirm something I thought I saw before:
    http://thesilentchief.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/joseph-capelli-resistance-2.jpg

It’s most definitely him – and I wouldn’t say “redesign” as much as “time passed and he got a bit older and worn down”. He probably couldn’t maintain the pampered lifestyle after the sentinel program (since *SPOILER* he was the last one), so he didn’t eat as much, and he lost some weight, and he grew some facial hair, and he got a few more wrinkles… as long as the voice actor is the same, and the attitude is still partially there, and the proper back-story is created, it’ll be fine. I would REALLY hate to see Hale go, but Capelli could be the fresh spin on Resistance that could maybe keep it going (sort of like Master Chief in Halo — I know I know, but I like to think that R:FoM was my Halo)

  45. Robbie says:

I don’t think these are screen shots from the actual game, they look more like concept art to me. Still incredibly badass though, I can’t wait to buy a PS3! :D
