PSP2 To Be UMD Free, Match 360 For Power

10/28/2010 Written by Sebastian Moss

Another day, another PlayStation Portable related rumor. Recently leaked images of what appears to be a PlayStation Phone surfaced, with Engadget pointing at a Android based phone being released sometime next year. Now, another rumor has surfaced, that boasts some pretty impressive figures for the PSP2.

According to Kotaku, sources have told them that the PlayStation Portable 2 will “rival the Xbox 360 in processing power” and drop the UMD (Universal Media Disc) format. Apparently, multiple sources detailed their meetings with Sony during the Tokyo Game Show about the long-rumored PSP2. At the meetings, the device was shown to have a touch panel on the back of the system akin to a mouse trackpad. The PSP2 also had the much demanded dual analog sticks and a larger display which Sony proclaimed to be HD.

Sony has yet to settle on a final design, with one version looking like a PSP Go, and one looking like the standard PSP.

Kotaku’s sources claim that the PSP2 is entirely UMD free, much like the PSP Go, with games being stored on the handheld’s Memory Stick. Additionally, Sony is still thinking of other UMD-less storage solutions for the PSP2.

The PSP2 will be a much more powerful gaming device than its predecessor with “twice the RAM of the Xbox 360″. The PSP2 will have 1 GB of RAM – to put that in perspective, the PSP Go and PSP 3000 have 64 MB of RAM, and the Xbox 360 has 512 MB of RAM.

On top of that, VG247‘s sources have “confirmed” that the PSP2′s codename is “Veta”, and that the machine will have a 5-6″ screen.

Nothing has been confirmed by Sony, and, as ever, we’d recommend taking any rumors with a pinch of salt. While these rumors may not be entirely true, the PSP2 itself is already in developer’s hands.

alright Sony i’m in………..just make it affordable thats the only thing i’m asking, that and have a way to transfer umd games that i have onto the system

  2. Natiej85 says:

All I know is that if the pic above is what will actually come out with close system movie playbacks. I’m already sold.

  3. Lol this is awesome. But yeah i will have to pick this up i was always hoping the new psp would be like holding a dual shock in your hand but by that i mean that is has all the buttons

  4. Teamcool_5 says:

add trophy support please………that an hopefully developers will back it this time making enough good games for a change

    • Unless they secure the system down from hackers, trophies will never happen on the PSP. Hackers could unfairly unlock the trophies and completely inflate their value. If the original is any indication, the PSP2 won’t be getting trophies any time soon for that reason.

      • lemulot says:

Speculation. The same arguments hold for the PS3 as well… and we have trophies. As said by other sources, the only real way against piracy is connectivity. A PSN account with bought games and DLCs, trophies, exclusive new contents on a weekly base offered by Sony, integration with the PS3, etc. Is it all hackable? Yes, of course everything is hackable. The question is would you risk to loose all that ’cause you’re being banned by Sony? Apparently the answer is no.

      • tazinlwfl says:

The PSP is like SUPER hacked. To the point of the Xbox 360. And since it doesn’t do multiplayer, not real way to get blocked (like the Xbox). PS3 is no where near that level of degradation…

      • KwietStorm says:

        @lemulot

PS3 is nowhere near the same situation as PSP. Not even an argument. Even if it was, we had trophies long before it was hacked.

  5. Richy2k9 says:

    hello …

    I’m in too ;)

    cheers!

  6. WestSiide says:

wouldn’t that mean that it’ll also have more ram than the ps3 as well? I think this is just wishful thinking. I don’t think it’ll have these kind of speccs. I can already see it priced between around $3-350. too much for portable gaming.

    • skypeonps3 says:

lol $3 why did you go with 3 instead of 2 or 4? lol

      • WestSiide says:

i don’t understand what your trying to say. what I said was that I think the price will be around $300-350 US dollars.

on a side note, how can they keep it pocketable with a 5-6 inch screen? my cell phone (touch pro 2) in my opinion is barely pocketable. I can’t imagine carrying a 5 or 6 inch device in my pocket.

      • tazinlwfl says:

Very good point! Hmm… I guess if a 7″ Galaxy Tab is considered portable, than a 5-6″ PSP2 is reasonable…

      • WestSiide says:

well, theres a difference between pocketable and portable. a galaxy tab, yes is portable but not pocketable. a portable gaming system needs to be pocketable. thats the whole point and appeal to own one. to be non intrusive and throw in your pocket when your on the go. it needs to be able to fit in your pocket or i can see many turned off by its size.

      • I think you’re onto something, psp2/pants with big pockets bundle?

  7. skypeonps3 says:

Man I can smell that there are going to be Avesome games on it, God Of war, Uncharted, Kilzone, Resistance, Ratchet And Clank, Hopefully a Cod Game, Grand Theft Auto, Probably some Remakes, Red dead Redemption anyone “Your Whole World In Your Hands”

  8. lemulot says:

It will have twice the RAM of the PS3 (including from the GPU)!?! If the PS3 only had at least the double it have now…

  9. xtigerz says:

We all know that the PSP2 is coming sooner or later. The problem will be the price. Knowing SONY they will sell the PSP2 for about $300.

  10. Battery life, good games, affordable, apps. Those are the things that sell. You have to make a handheld that can rival the current smart phones. It has to be worthy of pocket space. I really think they need a phone version and a non phone version. Just like the iphone and the ipod.

  11. ZombieHell says:

Its going to be one hella of a E3 for Sony next year

  12. themule says:

Wrong Sony, WRONG. They would be dead in the water once again if they did this. What they must do is make a cheap piece of last gen crap, just as the Nintendo DS is, make sure it has LOTS of casual games for kids and females in general. Price it under $200 at launch, take care of piracy protection, and ENJOY SUCCESS.

  13. I HAVE to be able to transfer my UMD games to this. If not, no deal!.

  14. Jawknee1 says:

I wonder if they will choose another form of physical media. I can’t imagine downloading games that are Xbox graphics quality. Would fill up your memory really fast.

  15. Jawknee1 says:

Yes but you should know Sony prefers progress to mediocrity. If they didn’t we would have the best console on the market today. Sony looks to the long term for success. They want games to get better. Not stagnate.

  16. wtGp says:

can’t wait to the successor to the psp

  17. If most of these rumors end up as truth, I’m in on this boat.

  18. xDUMPWEEDx says:

This sounds absolutely amazing. Day 1 purchase for me!

  19. The1Weapon says:

    3 things about this:

First of all, even if Kotaku’s sources were right to the T, 5-6″ is dang huge for a portable. The Dell Streak has a 5 inch screen and that thing looks a little bit awkward.

Secondly, like mentioned above me, specs are nice and all, and I want it to be as powerful as it can be, but Sony has to figure out someway to combat piracy before I get this. The more open it is to piracy, the less it’ll e developed for and the more waste of space it’ll become unfortunately.

Lastly, the features have to be well implemented. I want bluetooth connectivity like the PSP Go has. It has to have 802.11 n wifi (or at least something that’ll make it download much faster than it already does). I think it needs hard drive space (not sure if the Go’s drive is solid state). I feel that it needs to have some type of expandable storage option that is widely accepted already. Memory sticks are hard to come by in large quantities these days especially ones that have a ton of storage (bought one recently and the most amount of space I could find was 8 GB). IT NEEEEDDDDSSSS BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY with at least most of the games that have come out for the PSP. Sony has very much dropped the ball on this though as far as making the games available from the download front. I feel that PSN needs to play a good part in it also. Not to the extent to which the network itself is prone to attack, but the device needs to be connected and linked to an account in order to activate/function in my opinion. They need to take some strong cues from Apple.

But what do I know? I’m just a measley consumer.

  20. tazinlwfl says:

My question is – will people pay a premium for this? The PS3 was shot down for the price, but it also had a limited library at launch (especially compared to everything else being on the market for a year already). Now everyone wishes they came back out with the original launch PS3, and would even be willing to pay the premium (Hell, I know I would). With PSP’s Library pretty impressive, if the PSP2 has BC, and a solid line-up/launch exclusives, then would you be willing to drop some major dough on something with these sort of specs?

  21. unknwn123 says:

i have a feeling this thing will be huge, not much of a super portable device.

but obviously sony has thought of that so ill be expecting something worth the money

  22. i’m fine with a umd system , they need to get all psp games on digital though , also it needs a large built in memory . like 64gb to 128gb.

  23. Cross313 says:

    400 dollar handheld, ugh.

  24. genious sony … cause the go has been gangbusters w/o umd support! wish i had KH!

  25. isn’t that why they made games digital so they could be played on future handhelds like psp2? why do you want umd ? so you can barrow friends games so you don’t have to pay to play a game? i’d radther carry around a system when i a travel that has games i paid for on it , instead of lugging around a bunch of games on top of that. digital is the way to go for on the go portables.

  26. Dear PlayStation,

If you make a PS Phone, same price point and functionality as the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 or better, and the same form factor as the PSP Go or smaller… I WILL BUY IT

If you make a PSP2 to the specs that are rumoured, give it physical media, and (yay) buttons, and make it backwards compatible with all PSP, PS Minis and PS1Classics on PSN, reasonable form factor and if it costs $200 or less… I will probably buy that as well. UMD support would be nice, maybe they could make a BluRay UMD.

I just hope that Sony realise how important backwards compatibility is now, for both a PS Phone and a PSP2, especially when many of us are building up sizable collections of digital downloaded games on PSN and PS Plus.

  27. JackC8 says:

There are too many conflicting rumors to rally come to any conclusions at this point. I guess we’ll see. Dual analog sticks and a hi-def screen sound great. I’d probably be willing to pay for that. But not if we’re looking at only having a small percentage of PSP games available for it via download.

  28. xST-ANGERx says:

If there is no vibration during gameplay I’m not interested. I like the idea of a portable vibrating device on which i can play games. Purely for the gaming aspect, obviously. Really, honestly :-s

  29. WestSiide says:

    PSPants!! i like that idea.
