Portal 2′s Cake Needs Baking Until April 2011

11/18/2010 Written by Jonathan Leack

It’s been almost more than the three years since the cake became a lie, and another six months since Gabe Newell gave his coming out of the closet speech regarding Portal 2 coming to the PlayStation 3 platform. Although gamers have been craving the unique puzzle adventure, the developers at Valve keep pushing the release date farther and farther away.

Valve has announced what the company calls “the shortest delay in Valve history”. In simpler terms, Portal 2‘s release date was delayed from February 9th to April 18th, 2011. This comes as the second official delay of Portal 2, with the game originally intended to be a Holiday 2010 release. So much for that.

Portal 2 is a sequel to the cult-hit Portal, which allows the use of portals to travel between two objects instantly as the name implies. Portal featured some memorable puzzle moments and even began a slew of online fads including the beloved Companion Cube and insanely persistence A.I. called GLaDOS. Portal 2 is looking to add a handful of new elements to the series in addition to some interested co-operative mechanics.

“the shortest delay in Valve history”

    Oh god, the lulz…

  2. I hope Portal 2 is more friendly to those who suffer from vertigo than Portal 1 was. When I was playing Portal 1, and flinging myself around rooms and through portals, the constant re-orientation caused my vertigo to kick in. I became dizzy, threw up all over myself, fell out of my chair, hit my head on the desk, and was rendered unconscious. What sucks is that I was home alone for the day, so I hadn’t bothered putting clothes on. My family came home a few hours later to find me lying naked on the floor, unconscious, and covered in my own vomit. Now they think I’m some kind of weird sexual deviant. I’d really like to play Portal 2, but I can’t risk it unless it’s far more friendly to those with vertigo issues.

Bah. At least I’ll get a LITTLE bit of a break from the onslaught that is Q1 2011.

I think the packed Q1 release schedule is the main reason they are pushing this out to April, which is fine with me. I’ll have GT5, LBP2, KZ3, and plenty of other games to hold me over till April.

  4. …I get the video game industry wanting to get respect and recognition as an art form and as an industry as a whole but is there one game that is not going to get delayed or cancelled? How could you take anyone seriously when they are never on time with the promises that they make?

  5. I called it! Yay! Now I can buy Deus Ex!! Win.

Just hope this cake is not a lie.
