Tony Hawk Shred Completely Faceplants

11/18/2010 Written by Corey Schwanz

Tony Hawk used to be a household name in the video game world. But that was back in the days of the PSOne and the PS2 and maybe the early PS3. Nowadays, he’s not doing so hot.

The latest entries in the Tony Hawk Skateboarding franchise haven’t been doing so well. The most recent game, Tony Hawk: Ride introduced a new skateboard peripheral that made the game extremely expensive. So with a steep price point and abysmal review to boot, the game totally bombed at the sales office. Tony took this opportunity to step back and reevaluate the series. After some deliberation, he and Activision announced Tony Hawk: Shred back in April.

But Mr. Hawk is just completely sold on the idea that you have to have a peripheral to make it a good skateboarding game. While owners of the Ride skateboard are able to reuse their purchase on the sequel, apparently that wasn’t enough to promote sales. In the game’s first week of release, October 26th through November 1st, it managed to sell a gruesome 3,000 copies according to the NPD Group. Across all three major platforms.

I’m sorry Tony. You may be an excellent skateboarder, and I am not one to judge. But one of these days, you’ve just got to put bury the proverbial board. Go back to doing tricks, or maybe release an HD-remake of one of your older games. One of the good ones.

Give me Tony Hawk 1 HD (hopefully the Dreamcast version, which looked way better than PS1) the rest of the games were shit… TH2 had a few moments but TH1 was definitely one of my top childhood games.

THPS2 through THUG would like a word with you… Either way, the series has been going downhill since Project 8 (which was one of the first PS3 titles I bought for PS3 and I loved it) and even after spending my teenage years loving the series it’s about time it was put to rest

  2. wooooowwww…. I’d claim I’m not surprised it didn’t sell well, but wow, I’m surprised at how miserable sales are. I could have sold more monkey crap on a stick than that. Maybe. Well, thats gotta be the end of the franchise as we know it… I mean, if that’s not another nail in the already half buried coffin then I just don’t know what is.

Does anyone think this will teach Activision a lesson about milking franchises with no innovation between iterations until they’re dead? No? I didn’t think so either.

Activision loves to milk its franchises to death, I don’t see them ever learning for their mistakes. I am really not surprised it failed to sell as all, as i seen little marketing for the title nor reviews for it.

  3. Tony Hawk had a new game that just released? Nuff said. Congrats Tony Hawk you have been beaten by a ginger whose game looks like it could be fun for maybe 5 minutes, my hat is off to you farewell

It’s not surprising…I only heard Shred existed when reports of how bad it sold surfaced…this game had even less exposure than ride.
