The recent casting of Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake for the Uncharted movie has had caused some fans to worry that the movie will be nothing like the game. Now, the latest bit of news regarding the storyline of the film may make matters worse for some of you. A hint – fans of the games’ stories may not be pleased.
According to director David O. Russell, in an interview with the LA Times, while the story centers around Nathan Drake, it will also include his family. This family, which was not mentioned at all during the two entries in the game series so far, consists of other thieves who deal with various people of important status:
“This idea really turns me on that there’s a family that’s a force to be reckoned with in the world of international art and antiquities…that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and metes out justice.“
These new characters may be roles for other actors such as Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro to fill. Mr. Russell explained a bit more on why he feels this family dynamic should work well:
“We’ll have the family dynamic, which we’ve done in a couple of movies now…And then you take that and put it on the bigger, more muscular stage of an international action picture, but also put all the character stuff in it. That’s a really cool idea to me.“
The script is approximately halfway done, and although no release date has been given yet, Russell stated progress on the script is like “a locomotive.” Rest assured PlayStation LifeStyle will stay with this story as it develops.

If it’s not even going to follow the same sort of story line as the games why are they even going to call it Uncharted??
I can see this being another film adaptation that is going to fail, I’m sorry but that is my belief, I really hope I’m wrong but I will be rewarded with a big fat “I told you so” I can feel it.
An actual real family *shudders* And, by the looks of it, the events of the games wont have even happened in the movie universe
When they say “family” do they mean blood relations, or a family like the way a group of people that work together refer to themselves as ‘like a family’… like the mob? That distinction makes a big difference. And yea, what? Is this supposed to take place before or after the events of the games?
Not so sure about this now tbh. I thought an Uncharted movie could work if it stuck to the amazing story in the games.
Now I simply fear it could end up like most other video game based movies…..awful.
I read that it would include Drake’s father and uncle so I guess Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro would be the uncle and father? I just wonder if Sully and Ellena are going to be in the movie or its just going to focus on Nathan Drake and create an entirely different story that isn’t really like that based on the games.
Well, there is a lot to fill in – like how Sully and Nate got together… And what about the history of the people in the second game… Drake has a reputation, so maybe this movie will show why. Maybe Sully was good friends with Drake’s dad?
I sure hope this is the case, I could dig a prequel if it’s done right. I just wish they’d come out an flat out say if it’s a prequel instead of confusing us to death.
They aren’t “filling in” anything. This movie will have hardly anything to do with the games.
Am I the only one waiting for the moment they announce the cast and we all see not even the NAMES match the characters from the game?
I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they decide to call the character “Nathan Stone” or something different, or create a Victor Sullivan that has nothing to do with Sully from the game and make him his uncle. I’m really, really expecting the worse : a FUNNY YOUNG SIDEKICK for “comic relief”, now that would do it….
This will most likely be be the case, but i’m praying to jesus every night that it doesn’t end up like this. I really just don’t see why they don’t just come up with a different title.
Also, why is sony and ND not working on a CG film based on the games like what was done with resident evil degeneration, that’d be something i’d love to see happen.
So it’s not uncharted, but antiques roadshow: goodfella addition? Should please grandmas everywhere :p
Sorry, final straw, END OF THE FUCKING LINE. I’m off. I do not want any part of this film, new storyline, new roles, bad casting. This is going to suck and to be honest last week pissed me of with some dumbass hollywood director telling me what I want in a film.
If there was any justice this film would be locked away in a goverment warehouse never to be seen again.
Even if that happened could we trust the “top men” to make sure the abomination never escaped?
Your right, best to just blow it up to be on the safe side oh and set all the script writters on fire.
My gut reaction to this project is that it’s completely unnecessary. The Uncharted games are already incredibly cinematic and are a perfect example of what you can do with the video game medium to tell a story. There isn’t any reason at all to adapt it to another medium cause a lot of what we like about Uncharted won’t transfer over to a movie. This is something that has always plagued video game adaptations and always will. On the other hand I like the films of David O Russell and it’s shaping up to have a great cast. (I like Mark Whalberg but I think he’s wrong as Drake…oh well)
In the end, I don’t see any reason to get really upset with this news, the Uncharted video games will always be here and they will be fantastic. It’s the same when a great comic or book gets adapted into a crappy movie, the source material will still be the same. If anything this will get more people to check out the games and buy a PS3. That’s a good thing right?
I said it before, and I’ll say it again: another case of Hollywood cashing in on a hot property, only to dumb it down for the masses and giving hardcore fans the finger all the way to the bank. Tomb Raider redux, anyone?
