Uncharted 3′s Debut Trailer Uses In-Game Assets to Flabbergast Spectators

12/11/2010 Written by Jonathan Leack

When Naughty Dog released Uncharted and Uncharted 2, both became objects of inspiration for video game developers looking to push visual design to the next level. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception debuted its first trailer at the VGAs today, and in a similar fashion people across the globe wonder how the series’ level of detail is so refined. So much, in-fact, that some have been saying that the recent trailer is all composed in CGI.

Naughty Dog has declared on Twitter that the debut trailer for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception was all composed with in-game assets:

Yes, #UNCHARTED3 trailer was all from in-engine + actual gameplay. 11-1-11!!

As if Uncharted 2: Among Thieves wasn’t visually stunning enough, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception looks like another advancement in power. The lighting effects, facial animation, and cinematic qualities shown in the latest trailer are all arguably the best we’ve seen in the industry, and a solid addition to Naughty Dog’s expansive resume of games with outstanding presentations.

Damn near looked like concept art.

  2. NivekKom says:

Surely you meant Drake Deception? Not Descent?

  3. This is one of the reasons why Uncharted 3 was my favorite thing at the VGA’s. They actually showed gameplay and the trailer was made from the game engine. It wasn’t CG like some of the other games that were presented.

Of the heavy hitters, Arkham City probably didn’t need the CGI trailer – that game looks phenomenal. Mass Effect definitely needed a CG trailer. I’m sure the game is fun, but it lacks graphically.

Uncharted’s in-game engine looks damn good. I noticed the water effects, and the character animation when under fire are MUCH improved. And the indoor lighting (Sully and Drake) was great. Didn’t see any female characters, though – I wonder if they’ll be one…

  4. Wow. inFamous 2 & Twisted Metal were announced before this and they still don’t have release dates. Way to be out done. Uncharted 3 was what? Announced like two days ago. Release date. Keeping dreaming eat.sleep. play & Sucker Punch

Oh c’mon…that Drake in the desert is hardly in-game assets, it’s fully pre-rendered and looks nothing like the one talking to Sully (which imo looks ASTONISHING and that one truly IS in-game asset) and that sand with the flowing dust in the wind effect…heh, no way in hell the PS3 can do that with in-game assets. Probably there’s a take or two when the airplane is shown in a wide shot where there’s plenty of in-game assets, but not that Drake breathing and that sand with those effects.

    • KwietStorm says:

Yea, it was pre-rendered using the game engine.

    • giese095 says:

you’re right, the developer themselves told us that it was from in-game specifically so that when the game comes out and doesn’t look that good they have a mob of people telling them they lied to us…makes sense to me…

      • themule says:

really , then explain the differences, the BIG differences obvious to the naked eye between both Drake models in the trailer cut-scenes : Drake in the desert scenes and Drake talking with Sully. I’m not saying the desert scenes didn’t use in-game assets at all, but they are HEAVILY baked and that drake model full animations and those sands with all the extra-eye candy effects, its more than obvious that are not the in-game engine.

      • giese095 says:

the difference is that one is an in-game engine cut scene and the other is actual gameplay footage…how’s that for an explanation?

    • You usually make sense with the things I read that you post but I have to say the was the most ignorant comment that I have seen in a while. I doubt Naughty Dog would lie about that.

      • themule says:

Read post above. Dude, it’s not lying, it’s more like telling you half the truth. Look at God of War III cut-scenes for example. They look real good, REAL good, and all of them are rendered with in-game engine. However, many of them are added an extra flair with pre-baked effects to make them look more pretty and cinematic. You know how you recognize those? the ones that are videos, and Kratos doesn’t change his skin when you are indeed using a different one. Now, in this Uncharted trailer, that Nathan Drake model is not the same you see talking to Sully, go ahead and have a good look at them. And the sand effects in the desert, man, that’s not rendered by in-game engine, c’mon….it’s not so hard to tell.

Here, this was a reply on the blog:

“it was all in-engine and in-game gameplay. i don’t say ingame because it wasn’t from a real-time playback of the cutscenes, pre-recorded, as we’ve always done.”

Not sure what the big damn deal is… Just as he said, this is no different from what they have always done with every Uncharted… I agree with Dark Knight on this, if your bitching your just damn ignorant.

      • themule says:

He clearly states it, you are the ignorant, so please, stop with the insults ok? Why make a difference between in-game and in-engine then? Ask him about the difference, will you? I didn’t want to make a big fuss about this, it begun only as an observation and now the guy clearly says “I don’t say in-game ’cause that was not real-time”. As I’ve been saying the in-game engine can’t render SOME of that stuff in real time to look like that, so many extra effects are added on top, and the Drake model is vastly superior in every way, not to mention lighting and shadows. Oh whatever…this is pointless.

      • Jawknee1 says:

Mule, just stop. Stop trying to crap on everyone’s fun. You know what these mean. IT IS PRERENDERED USING THE INGAME ASSETS! Just like God of War III. Why is this so hard for you to understand and why do you care so much?

  6. TheHater says:

Sony exclusive were the only games to actually show gameplay footage rather than CGI like the other trailers. Kudos to Sony.

  7. heckteck says:

Sully kind of looks younger so i think it’s a prequel well at least before uncharted 2 because you see drakes journal with a bullet hole in it from the first one

  8. something doesn’t feel right though. The twitter has been removed.

  9. Jasx501 says:

The shot of the table and fireplace are definitely in-game. There are enough jagged lines to suggest that not all AA had been accomplished on the pass, which would mean pre-rendering. As for the desert scene it looks phenomenal but hardly CG. CG nowadays would look so close to real life, think the beginning to Mass Effect 3′s trailer, that it would be hard to tell if it was live action/CG. Idk, maybe the standards that GoW and U2 have placed are making it harder for games to pass as “not CG”. But that’s a good thing, right?

  10. Raphael says:

    And with High Res 3D!!!

  11. KwietStorm says:

    @themule

What dont you understand? You even explained it yourself with God of War. Do you know what post processing is? Pre-rendered doesn’t mean it wasn’t made using the game engine.

Jesus that looks great already 2011 GOTY or Resistance 3?

omg its too good for ps3, poor eggbox is dead
